Darksiders 2 is shaping up to be an exciting sequel so far, with new elements being added in that will fully flesh out the experience. We’ve already heard that we’ll be playing as a different Horseman this time, Death, while we’re also going to be treated to some dungeon crawling features such as loot and more upgradeable items. The one thing that Vigil Games is not doing however, is including a multiplayer option.
While the game provides ample material for co-op gameplay, seeing as there are four Horseman of the apocalypse, game director Marvin Donald explained that it just isn’t possible right now for such a feature to exist, due to technical limitations.
(Multiplayer) has been something we’ve been wanting to do since Darksiders 1,you almost have to make four games. You’ve got completely different animation sets. It’s 800 to 1,000 animations for Death alone and they’re all unique.
One thing great about working with Joe (Madureira) is that he comes up with awesome characters but they have completely different proportions, so you can’t share any of the animations across them. It’s not just animating the characters but balancing their powers that would also take time.
Of course there’s balancing with the different abilities. We’re going to want them to play differently, so we wanted to spend some time developing each of the characters individually.
So, does that mean that the possibility of forming an apocalyptic team of friends is out of the question for future games? Even Donald is unsure of that at this point, stressing that “It’s too soon to sayâ€.
Multiplayer is definitely something we want, but this time around we’re not quite ready for it.
Darksiders 2 has been mentioned as being in development for the Wii U, so provided if game sales are positive for the sequel, perhaps if the third game appears on the next generation of consoles, we could see some of that tantalisingly sweet multiplayer.
