With all the future DLC coming as free updates, it would make sense to throw Call of Duty Zombies fans a chewed up, soggy old bone.
You might now know this, but Call of Duty: Modern Warfare released last week. I know, super under-the-radar launch for the game that many are hailing as being a turning point in the iconic shooter franchise and while this reboot of the 2007 classic has brought with it a slew of new game modes, a polished campaign and a constantly addictive multiplayer, there’s one thing that many COD fans are probably missing: Zombies. While the zombies co-op multiplayer in Call of Duty may not have blown up in the collective consciousness like the competitive multiplayer, what started out as a fun little Easter egg in World at War has grown into something far bigger than I think many would have expected. While zombies have never actually made their appearance with a Modern Warfare game, it looks like that’s about to change soon.
Dataminer That1MiningGuy discovered during what I imagine to be a particularly dense bout of virtual spelunking a file within Modern Warfare entitled PRESENCE/MP_ZOMBIES. Which seems to all but confirm that zombies already exist in some form within Modern Warfare, but there is something weird about the discovery, namely that the file was found within a list of maps. There’s still speculation as to what this file could relate to: A separate multiplayer mode? An event tied to the game’s Special-Ops co-op mode? Maybe even a soft-confirmation of the rumour battle royale mode as zombies were featured within Black Ops 4’s battle royale offering.
What makes the discovery of a zombie file even weirder is that Infinity Ward have previously stated that zombies would not be featured in the latest Modern Warfare as the game mode would clash with the serious tone the game is trying to set. So…I don’t know, maybe just don’t believe everything on the Internet? If this does turn out to be real, I hope it acts as a soft reboot of Treyarchs’s zombies formula which really got too convoluted for my tastes.
