David Cage claims Microsoft were lying about Natal

Quantic Dream’s co-founder and co-CEO David Cage has been chatting to Destructoid about the upcoming PlayStation Move and Project Natal but his most interesting comments come out when he talks about Microsoft’s E3 trailer from last year.

Remember the one with the kid who scans in his own skateboard and then rides it down the road in the game?

Well according to Mr Cage that is flat out lying, the technology isn’t anywhere near that level yet and he feels Microsoft shouldn’t be tricking people into getting overly excited about the Natal.

Personally I can’t understand how that part could really be that difficult, surely it’s just going to take a picture of the board and apply that image as a skin to the board in the game?

Obviously Mr Cage knows way more than I do about the gaming industry but if that’s the part that he thought was over the top then I guess it means the rest of the things we saw are possible? I personally cannot wait for the Minority Report styled dashboard.

Another place where MS were lying is the whole Milo thing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8aUhsrM0sA

There also other videos about the other stuff that was faked in the demo (moving the water in the pond – the reflections on the screen of Claire are different the the actual Clair standing there).

This is the whole problem with Natal at the moment. Yes these are tech demo’s and product visions but your visions shouldn’t be too far from the truth. I guess time will tell.

They do it with Little Big Planet they can do it with Natal. Cause of the example he used I think he just trying to bring down Natal cause Sony pays his salary.

Where is this tech used in LittleBigPlanet?

I think he thinks it’s making a full 3d image of the board and not just a simple image (I mean the guy in the video has his fingers covering parts of the board). I think he thinks if you had a different sized board that (like an old school longboard) it would pick that up and fully render that in 3D and allow you to ride it.

If you guys remember correctly, the video clearly stated that it was a basically a target goal concept video of what they want to do with it, and what they think it will be capable of.

They never suggested that it was all going to be exactly like that, or that it was all already functioning

Yes that is right. But I wouldn’t say it clearly showed that.

Most of the videos you watch are terrible quality and the blurry text at the bottom can be hard to see!

Oh and I would also hold off saying “This is true technology that science fiction has not even written about… and this works… today… now”.

Let’s wait and see what happens at E3 when we get some demos and talk about this again. We are not really sure how this is going to work and what games will be available and what boundaries this will have. Can’t comment on speculation from people.
