You wouldn’t believe it, looking at pictures or even video, but Dead or Alive 5 from Tecmo’s Team Ninja is actually a fighting game. Instead, you’d be more likely to think it was some sort of Sports Illustrated Swimwear edition modelling simulator. The game’s latest DLC is a collection of skimpy beachwear for the game’s femme fatales.
Don’t get me wrong. i have nothing against the fine female form, and it would be rather hypocritical of me to deride its use here, but but Tecmo has said in the past that it wanted to ensure that the game had more class in future, and would be doing away with the overtly sexualised nonsense the series is known for.
“In the series up to now we focused on some kind of… Sports Illustrated [aesthetic]. Like a magazine for high school kids, with women portrayed in that sense,” Team Ninja boss Yosuke Hayashi said in 2012. “We’ve always had the sex factor in the game; in the past, the female characters had to have big breasts, they had to have scanty dress.”
Hiyashi said back then that the team was looking to portray women more realistically.
“We’re trying to focus on the real women that surround us; the voice of a female, the mannerisms. We are being realistic about it,” he said. “We want to show something that’s more high class, that adult males of our generation could look at a woman [character] and be impressed with her as a woman, not just as a pin-up.”
Obviously, they’ve forgotten that, or sales of the game just haven’t been as good as hoped, because it’s devolved back in to this. There’s the video above, complete with cheesy porn music, and a gallery of screenshots.

Why always the idea that sexyness is “lame”, “low”? I don’t think this kind of content is pulling the game “down” in any way. On the contrary, these are so beautiful. DOA is the only fighting game that actually offers such a different take on the view of its characters; why complain? If you want something different, then go play a different game. Not that criticism is always bad, but DOA is ALWAYS getting flak for whatever it puts out, regardless whether or not people are allready aware of what to expect of it. I really appreciate the fan service offered by Team Ninja in this game, its the only of its kind for the home consoles.

That is my point: it not silly for me, for a bunch of other players and obviously not silly for the developers. You say “sexy” is fine. To me this is sexy. So, how much “sexy” is fine? And who are you (or me) to tell?
It is by no means overshadowing the fighting aspect of the game. Everyone recognizes DOA, from Team Ninja, as being a fighting game “with a plus”. This is only an extra in the menu, nothing to freak about, nor silly.
