Fallout 4 wins the BAFTA for best game at this year’s awards

I had hoped, given that we’re very nearly a third of the way through this year, that the big awards ceremonies that dish out accolades to games from the year past had come to an end – mostly because I’m tired of seeing The Witcher 3 win everything, as deserved as it is.

Well, there are more awards yet – and the British Academy of Film and Television (and not games) has dished out awards to games. And The Witcher 3 has won…nothing. Not a thing. The most awarded game in the history of the medium lost out to…Fallout 4. In addition to besting The Witcher 3, Fallout 4 beat Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, Life is Strange and Rocket League for the statue.

Life is Strange did get an award for Best Story, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture took home three awards, and Rocket League won three too, but The Witcher and Metal Gear left empty handed.

Works fine now on PC, get 60fps with all Nvidia goodness on my 970

Really fun game, still have the dlc to tackle and can smile that I only paid around R250 for the base game + all dlc

I was one of those that preordered it. Personally didnt have any issues with performance, 60fps with my 970 aswell from the start.
my rage towards the game was directed at my disks not having the full install on it. only installed 7gb of the 40gb+ game…

that said, the game was a bit underwhelming. played most of it, but never actually got round to finishing it.
Although I havent got round to finishing Fallout yet either, even though Ive got like 50+ hours played.

Fallout 4 is just Fallout NV with more crafting and more settlements that need your help…a lot more.

personally thought 4 was more fun and more playable than NV.
although 3 was better than both, in my books at least. the side quests didnt detract from the main story as much.

50 hours into 4 atm and Ive only just arrived at diamond city and cant be bothered to start the main story. the amount of fast traveling combined with the load times, takes so much away from the experience.

I put about 25 hours into NV, but I’ve probably got around 100+ in Fallout 3.
Fallout 3 just felt more like a wasteland and way more barren.

Yeah I ran out of steam when I finished Skellige. Haven’t gone back to it since. Same with Fallout. I hate leaving games unfinished but jirre, after 180 hours or so in the Witcher to only be maybe 2/3 through the story….

Can’t even go back now as I factory reset my console to solve an issue so lost my save games 🙁

180 hours seems like a lot, till you see the hours people clock up in DOTA or COD

          • GooseZA

            April 8, 2016 at 09:49

Yeah but that’s different. Your experience there is set. It’s like Rocket League. You log in, have a ton of fun, then log out. You’re not left wondering how your current storyline will end, who that weird person was you just met at some inn, how it’s all going to resolve. Putting hours into those games is fine because there’s no ending you have to get to.

I get super antsy about finishing stories and eventually it becomes more of a chore than a joy to finish long games (Coz I NEEEED TO KNOW!!), especialliy after 100+ hours.

They could’ve at least given us a second companion for Skellige, like a giant shark you could ride instead of a boat that’s more fragile than the raft Tom Hanks used

        • Greylingad[CNFRMD]

          April 8, 2016 at 09:59

Yep! That was a major gripe for me, up until the point where you travel to Skellige, you have areas to explore, when I did that part I was reminded of a joke Ron White once told…
“The last time I was here, one of you assholes did me the liberty of stealing my car radio, now I wouldn’t mind, had it not been for you smashing the rear winda’ of my pickup truck, drivin’ back home I was flattered, by listening to the beat of the wind….GOOOOOOOORRRRRRRR, SWOOOSH….”

And the characters in Witcher 3 were interesting and felt like real people. In Fallout 4 pretty much everyone felt like a differently skinned mannequin with no personality (except for Valentine). Not even to mention how lifeless their expressions were.

That’s exactly it, the game was fun, but when you dig, and this is me being very generous, deeper than 10 minutes of one of the missions, be it a side quest, main mission, whatever, it’s the same old fetch this, and make it poop on my neighbours lawn ritual, which made it feel hollow…

          • Captain JJ the Isolatid

            April 8, 2016 at 09:41

Yea man. Somehow people have convinced themselves that Fallout 4 isn’t just full of fetch quests.
I put 90 hours into it, so I did enjoy it, but when I stopped playing it didn’t make me feel anything and honestly I don’t care for finishing the game. It just didn’t pull me in.
Witcher 3 had me curious to listen to each person’s story and play those side quests that felt so dark and carried so much weight. After two hours in the Witcher you felt like you’d lived a different life for a moment.

Exactly! in TW3, every story was fleshed out, to the point where that was the main focus of the game, sure the combat was mediocre compared to Bloodborne, but hell, those stories, the peoples emotions carried over in every ounce of their being, THAT is what made TW3 so good…

Star Wars Ep VII proves it. 90% repeat of nostalgic themes, 10% fresh stuff.

Have you tried the Star Trek ship mod? Some of those ships are so damn cool!

HOW!? I ASK YOU HOW!? AND WITH WHAT DID THEY BRIBE THEM!? There were Tonnes of games released last year that were not just better, but TRUMPED Fallout 4, once you scratch the surface of Fallout 4 it reveals itself as a reskin of Fallout 3!! AAARRRRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!

And HOW!? JUST HOW is the Music award not given to Ori and the Blind forest?

That’s it, I’m not reading anymore news today, everything’s gone to shit in a handbag stuffed in a tumble dryer mixed with cocoa powder and served as Ice Cream…FFS…

Yes. Thank you. Somehow people think that Fallout 4 is this fresh new game. I don’t get it.
I’m not saying it was bad, on the contrary, but seriously, it’s not THAT great.

Steam is sneaky that way, gives you the installed size but the download size was way smaller.

            April 8, 2016 at 09:38

XCom EU was only a gig smaller on download than it was on install.
Damn, now I feel like I got cheated. I really was looking forward to starting up Wasteland 2.

You’re not, XCOM is awesome. One of the few games I’ve replayed over the last few years – 1st time vanilla, 2nd time straight after with the expansion.

            April 8, 2016 at 09:41

The only problem with EU, is EW…I cannot go back to it!

That being said, the biggest problem with XCOM, is XCOM2!

I got it with Humble Monthly, along with ARK and GRAV and a few other titles. I was quite surprised.
And got Mad Max this month 😀

Me too. I’ve been Batman in Arkham City, I’ve been Batman in Mordor. Now I’m ready to be Batman in the desert! 😀
But seriously, I’m looking forward to getting into that one.

            April 8, 2016 at 09:55

It’s been a while since I finished Arkham Origins, don’t have Mordor, so maybe it’s time for Batmax.

          • Captain JJ the Isolatid

            April 8, 2016 at 09:57

            I liked Origins.
I did go in with low expectations after people said it’s not so good, but I enjoyed it more than I did City.
Asylum is still the best though.

Oh me too man, but I have way too many things to get done at this stage, in the last month I’ve added probably about 30 games to my library, of which I’ve played the introductory screen of about 7 or 8 of them…

          • Captain JJ the Isolatid

            April 8, 2016 at 09:56

It’s a curse, really. The Humble Monthly is not helping, but it’s getting me great games (that are relatively new) that I wouldn’t have gotten for that same price.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

            April 8, 2016 at 09:57

Worth it for Max alone this month. Every previous month I’ve either owned everything or didn’t want what I didn’t.

            April 8, 2016 at 09:58

Isolation was a nice one for me too. ARK I already had, but I gifted it to a friend and then I didn’t have to play ARK alone anymore 😀
I’m surprised actually how many of the monthly games so far I’ve been lucky enough to not already have.

I wonder how that went, you know, the first time someone said asshat. I bet It went something like this…… Michelle was running late for a meeting with a very important client from Japan. Had she decided not to go out for drinks the night before, a tradition that had led to many a groggy Friday morning for countless career oriented go getters in the past, She would undoubtedly be ready for her day. Unfortunately that one last shot of tequila led took toll, She thought about it as she frantically ran around her loft looking for her shoe. She remembered slurring her way through the night and had glimpses of the horror she felt when trying to fall asleep, the world was spinning and she had to try and sleep with one foot on the ground and a hand holding the wall. Not pleasant. As she was getting out the Taxi, she thumbled through her purse to pay the driver all the while thinking of her presentation. If I get through today without ruining my career, I will never drink again…She vowed. Running for the boardroom afforded her no chance to indulge in the daily ritual of making herbal tee and settling in for the day. Nope, Straight to the boardroom today. As she entered the boardroom she stubbed her toe on the base of the oak desk, Ouch, she screamed. Slowly looking up in horror, it began to dawn on her that something was amiss. The boardroom was empty. Then it slowly began to dawn on her, It was Saturday…. It all came flooding back, the meeting happened already, they bagged the account. They left early and went to celebrate the day before. She began to say “ass, just as the Saturday cleaner walked into the boardroom to vacuum, hat”, she finished off. He heard this new less offensive way of swearing and thought that it would help him with his swearing problem. Years of cleaning urinals had left him in a bad mood and consequently turned his vocabulary into a sailor’s Jedi master. He pledged a to himself to tone down his language as his wife just gave birth to a baby girl. Asshat, I like it, he thought, Insulting but funny…

Actually, as I have said here before, I agree with them.

I thought, as an overall gaming experience, I enjoyed my time with fallout 4 more than Witcher 3. Not much more, but I did. The Witcher 3 had a superior story and Geralt is just AWESOME, but still….. I missed something in the GAME. Do not get me wrong, I LOVED Witcher 3. Just not as much as Fallout 4.
