The 2019 D.I.C.E recently concluded, handing out yet another set of accolades to last year’s biggest and best games. Unsurprisingly, the game that won most of the big Game of the Year Awards last year managed to win again, giving 2018’s God of War its latest trophy. The game won eight other awards, including Game Design, Game Direction , Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Character, awards for sound design and music and even story.

Fortnite – of course – won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Online Gameplay. Red Dead Redemption 2 won just a single award, for Outstanding Technical Achievement. “If there was an award for most overhyped and deathly boring game, it would have won that one too, but alas.” – I truly hope you are not referring to RDR2 here. If so, then you have no idea what you are talking about.

It was a beautiful game. I’ve never seen snow like that. But holy hell was it boring to watch. It looked miserably boring to play. But beautiful.

Completely agree with this, what a ridiculous and absurd statement by the ‘journalist’. The game was just not for people with a short attention span. If you actually gave the game time to develop its characters then just wow… Arthur Morgan did the opposite to Walter White, he transformed from bad to good. I don’t get why journalists have constant digs at Rockstar. Baffling!
God of War deserved its plaudits but i was torn between RDR2 and God of War, both exceptional games… but to describe it as ‘deathly boring’, just no!

I loved the first game. Was legit one of my favourite games of the last generation. Try as I might, I just could not get into RDR 2 at all. I keep restarting, putting 20 hours into it, and then deciding that my time is better spent elsewhere. Maybe it’s because I’d just come off spending 80 hours in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Maybe it’s because I didn’t feel it respected my time. Whatever the reason, it just feels like an absolute chore. I’m glad you enjoyed it (and so, so many other people did), because it is objectively a good game (and my god, is it gorgeous). But…it just isn’t for me.

Anyway, we inject a lot of opinion into stuff here. It makes things more interesting, and you’re welcome to agree or not agree, or tell me what an idiot I am. Have a rad day

That’s coz the game only really starts after 20 hours.

        Love it to bits though.

Easy, easy. Mr Tim has proven himself a competent journalist many times over in my opinion as a regular reader. Let the man express his opinion, that was his experience. His opinion can in no way ruin anyone else’s experience with the game. Comments like that is what I love about this site: The human side to the reporting and worth a lot of good chuckles.

No but stating things like ‘Red Dead Redemption 2 won just a single award’ and ‘overhyped’. Some of us clicked the article to read up on the winners; not your opinion and what i perceived as an almost gloat / low blow to Rockstar.
Also, it is not personal. Geoffrey is clearly a very talented writer and he is obviously great at his job. He is probably just taking flack off of me for all the other political articles I read that have clear set agendas yet claim to be balanced. Keep that type of journalism away from my video games please!!

I’m in the same boat as Geoff. The first game is one of my favourite games of all time. I got 100% completion for the single player. I pre-ordered the 2nd on and only got to Chapter 3 before giving up. Not sure why, I just couldn’t stick with it. Possibly spent too much time hunting, I don’t know. I’ll probably go back to it and just power through the main story eventually.

Yeah the game hooked me beyond chapter 3 & 4. The writing is quite brilliant. I felt the build up was needed for character arc/development.

Can’t say I cared much for the camp mechanic but I get why they did it. Agreed on the writing etc. The dialog and voice acting in the game is some of the best I’ve ever heard. Will get back to it eventually, but I expected it to swallow me whole for 2 months and it didn’t.

I love the game. But can completely see where he is coming from. It is a slow burn and you need plenty of time to get into it. Not many people can put 3 hours aside a day to play and you can’t just put 30 mins in it.

Yeah but you can say the same about Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad, but good writing takes time. The emotional impact this game and these shows have is more apparent towards the climax of the story arc. Its almost an investment of time resulting in a bigger output of emotion. I force myself to endure sometimes and normally it is worthwhile

Game of Thrones and Breaking bad are ‘passive’ experiences. Gaming isn’t, you are ‘IN’ the game and if you aren’t engaged, well you aren’t. I have spent plenty of time investing in shows to have that climax arc bite me in the arse so I can see why some wouldn’t want to waste time if they thing doesn’t grip them immediately.
