GTA V has made Kojima a little depressed

2 min read

By now, I’m sure you’ve all watched that pretty incredible GTA V trailer. I’ve had little to no interest in GTA since the fourth one disappointed me by being too much of an “annoying friends” simulator with too much focus on realism and not enough focus on fun – but after that trailer, I can say that I’ve happily boarded the hype train. You know who else found the trailer impressive? Hideo Kojima. So much so, that it’s made the fellow a little unsure of his own abilities as a game designer.

"GTA V" new trailer was awesome! This free control is future of the game, way higher than anywhere, makes me depress as matter fact.(cont..)

He seems to think his next-generation game appended with a V won’t be quite as good, and that Rockstar is the premier game developer on the planet.

That’s very humble of you, Mr Kojima – but there’s really no need to put yourself down like that. I’m sure your game is going to be just fine.

Here are both trailers. What do you think? Has Kojima been outclassed?

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

  • Admiral Chief Groot Wors

    Oh man, header lulz!

Hahaha, well done Sir Tim, well done!

  • DarthofZA

I think he is right on the money. Rockstar are the best. But he has nothing to fear, because Rockstar are leagues ahead of anyone else, and Kojima is at the forefront of the second wave.

    • Mark Treloar

Millions eagerly awaiting Watchdogs would maybe disagree on both

    • Skyblue

Don’t get me wrong, I love Rockstar’s games and have been playing them for years but there are a number of studios out there on par with them.

  • Hammersteyn

High praise indeed from the master. Kojima will learn from this and come back with something even greater.

    • Troll Slayer

When the PS5 launches along with GT7… ^5

  • ElimiNathan

Both games look really good in their own ways, I don’t think he has been outclassed….

    • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

What’s with the downvoters again today!? N24 must be having a slow news day lol

      • ElimiNathan

        Don’t know 🙁

      • Argentil

        Xbros, I tells ya.

  • Tbone187

Ha!!! That’s a joke…Kojima is just being humble as ever…GTA will never provide competition to MGS…after all the novelty features, you soon realise it’s simply another GTA…

  • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

I don’t feel he has anything to be depressed about, FOX engine and MGS 5 looks like it’s going to be a stunning game

    • TiMsTeR1033

now if only they could use fox engine and make a new Zone of the enders!

      • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

If only 🙁 we have PES using FOX lol

        • TiMsTeR1033

PES whos gives a crap eish. Dont even know why the make the series utter kak if you ask me. Fifa wayyyyyy better and I only play fifa at like braais lol

  • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Both are great games and both are aimed at different people. Both will do as well and will be loved by their respective fans

    • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Why do I feel like just rubbing Kojima’s head, shame poor guy, all hard on himself and stuff

      • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Hah! I say it’s a ploy. Put Rockstar in a false sense of security and then BAM! Ninja game release and awesomeness occurs and Rockstar are all like “Wut happened!?”

        • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Kojima hte sneaky bastard, it’s MGS 2 all over again. think you playing as Snake, wrong, here’s Raiden B*tches! But I think he is sincere though he’s a humble person when it comes to other developer’s technology and games.

          • Sir Rants-a-Lot Llew

Yeah, indeed. It’s a good sign because it means he will most likely put a bit more soul in to his games.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

Indeed, not like he doesn’t already but I think he’s going to push even harder also, have yet to see what project Ogre is too

          • Argentil

I believe The Phantom Pain IS Project Ogre. Hence the taboo themes.

          • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

            Was it confirmed?

          • Argentil

I’ll do some digging. The nose knows.

          • TiMsTeR1033

It is project ogre. and mgs ground zeros was talked and they said mgs 5 is project ogre awhile back

          • Argentil

Thank you for saving my precious time.

  • Airborne

Food for thought, perhaps… High praise indeed, but methinks Kojima-san aint gonna take that lying down… fdr, MG over GTA, anyday!

  • hendrik

No, MGS will always be (for me) the better game. GTA has always been mindless fun for me, but MGS, o boy, that story sucked me in.

  • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

On a side note, header reminded me of metal gear acid, great game!

  • Grant Hancock

I’ll be buying both ! … MGS looks like a blerrie nice game 🙂

    • Umar Kiiroi Senk?

      upvote for using blerrie 🙂

  • DarthofZA

They both look really good, but one is next gen, and the other is current gen…

    • Spathi

Both are actually current gen. MGSV is also coming to next gen, but apparently the footage we saw was current gen footage.

      • Argentil

The MGSV footage we saw was running on a PC with the approximate specs of the next gen consoles – Kojima has said that once the game is optimised for PS4/XboxOne the game will look even better.

As for graphical comparisons, MGS is definitely ahead on visuals. Animations, character details, weather effects, environment details, lighting and animations (again, because they’re fantastic). But GTA blew me away with the technical achievements it made on current gen hardware. Such a vast open world, with characters living out their lives in real-time. And that multiplayer is the first I’ve seen to approach Just Cause 2’s modded insanity. GTAV is doing things that next-gen games are bragging about.

        • Spathi

Cool thanks for the info. Wasn’t sure about it. I’ll be getting both, but for different reasons. True, GTAV is looking absolutely crazy good!

  • Rockstar definitely rocks, MGS:V is not that bad at all but GTA:V takes my money, i would rather be in Los Santos doing heist & living the lavish life rather in Afgany trying to save some dude, #nooffence

    • Argentil

I’m guessing you probably haven’t played much of the Metal Gear series.

  • Argentil

MGSV has nothing to worry about. As impressive as the GTAV trailer was, I’m still more excited for Kojima’s project. Metal Gear is known for it’s story, after all. I think Rockstar are slightly more hit and miss when it comes to addressing themes and spinning a yarn.

Metal Gear delivers an experience that is largely unique, and there are plenty of GTA clones out in the wild nowadays. But ofc, Rockstar will again raise the bar for its own genre.

I believe his statement is very much an esoteric Japanese politeness that is common there, but also he acknowledges that in terms of open world, Rockstar have them beat – but MGS has never been about the open world, and this is the first entry in the series that is even attempting it.

  • TiMsTeR1033

I believe one this is for sure both GTA 5 and MGS 5 are gonna push every little bit outta current gen! without a doubt! I mean 8 gb install for GTA 5 hell it could be a 16 gb install and id still buy it as long as it looks great and plays great! then again mgs 5 might be bigger than 8gb install

  • OVG

So what he is saying is that all the money in the world does not make a great game, great coding does.

I always thought coding was coding and depending on how high your production costs are, the better the game.

    • DarthofZA

Please tell me that is sarcasm…

    • Troll Slayer

      Feed the troll a cookie…

    • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Hahaha spoken like a true internet end-level boss. Hopefully, others will get the message too. If you spend half your budget on marketing, it doesn’t make your game good.

      • Argentil

The problem with triple A game development in a nutshell.

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Easy there Kojima, ever since your appearance on Microsoft’s behalf at E3, you’ve been sucking the self-doubt gland. What did they do to you, old man?

  • Sebastian Stroud

Metal Gear will always destroy GTA. In story, graphics, maybe not unrealistic fun but still. MGS fan all the way.

  • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

Two very different types of games, but both will pillage my wallet… Yes, you can be a GTA fan and a MGS fan… sigh! It’s not a competition. Sigh! kids these days.

  • CypherGate

Hideos game looks more dramatic serious style gaming whereas GTA5 looks more in the line of a not so serious kinda style and look. In some ways they quite different games even though V went open world. Open world is where Rockstar is king

  • M-Dawg101

Realtime weather? I dont live in the Sahara, so does that mean I wont be getting sandstorms 🙁 lol

  • Stiggie

You can’t compare Rockstar to other companies because other companies don’t do open world. Thats like comparing Sims 3 developer to a Crytek, who is better. Rockstar rule the open world market. Activision you can say rule the FPS world because of “Call of Kids” . you just can’t compare the two. GTA’s only competition is Saints Row(sorry you tried) and Sleeping Dogs(extremely close).

  • Joystickup-kid

“GTA V (by Rockstar North) makes other developers look lazy and incompetent”. (quoted from jamieleng post).
I agree with this notion. I mean in-game graphics of GTA V look waaaaay more realistic than any game I’ve ever seen… e.g Michael’s House. Now if they can mke such huge world look so realistic, then what the fuck is wrong with the FIFA franchise! Football games are set in such such a focused environment, we should be able top see every blade of grass. Instead we get fuzzy characters who ‘look alike’ the real players.
Ironically, only brilliant developers like Kojima understand what GTA V should mean to every developer taking money from hardworking citizens of the world.
