Ah, nobody forgets that first time when they finally settled on a handle that would stay with them for the rest of their gaming lives. For some, it was a joy to find a nickname which didn’t require numbers, the equivalent of a Brazilian Jiu Jutsu guy with the last name of Gracie finding a first name that was up for grabs. This is how the pro players at League of Legends chose theirs.
There’s some interesting takes told here, as well as quite a few silly ones. But it’s interesting nonetheless to see hear these guys got their names. How about you? Any special stories behind your gaming handles? I think the reason why I’m called Darranged speaks for itself…

After the movie Face off came out my brothers started calling me Caster Troy, and oh boy that has been used over and over again…. And then two years ago I came up with Jonah Cash and now I use the two of them everywhere!! Have two cause my personality is so big….. and fragmented…. Hahahaha

The first time I ever played at an actual LAN was by accident. Friend was playing in a 12 or 16 man Quake LAN @ UCT and I went with to watch. He was getting his ass kicked, was sitting in negative kills, got annoyed & told me to take over from him – but I must change his nick because he didn’t want my playing to count against him. I didn’t have one at the time so I thought, “What’s a silly, annoying nick to be killed by?” And so Captain_Dork was born. It was quite gratifying to hear people screaming, “WTF IS CAPTAIN_DORK?!?!”
Nowadays I just use some names of characters or creatures from a pair of books I like as the mood strikes me – seeing as I’m rarely online it doesn’t matter.
