It’s no surprise that the Xbox brand hasn’t done well in Japan and no matter how many resources Microsoft throws at the problem it appears that there is nothing they can do to make the land of the rising sun love them.
But they’ve continued to try and crack the historically lucrative market. However the latest figures coming out of Japan are surely going to make the money men start demanding that Microsoft simply remove the Xbox division from the country.
According to m-create, who track sales in Japan, in the last week of sales in the country only 100 Xbox Ones were sold.
No that’s not a typo and I’m not missing any digits, like Geoff. They literally only sold through 100 units which isn’t anywhere near the levels that would be required to justify a distribution system.
Even the terrible Vita TV unit sold 566 units and to put it really into perspective here is the whole chart
- New3DS LL – 19,620
- Wii U – 16,413
- PS4 – 10,822
- Vita – 10,797
- New3DS – 4,329
- PS3 – 2,633
- 3DS – 943
- 3DS LL – 880
- Vita TV – 566
- Xbox One – 100
What’s possibly even more surprising than the Xbox One’s dismal sales figures is the fact that the cut price Xbox 360 isn’t even selling any units anymore even though it has a fantastic library and should be some sort of competition to the PS3 which is still selling 2500 units a week.
Now if only someone in Microsoft could catch a wake up and start diverting the marketing budget from Japan to emerging markets before Sony locks down every single one of them while Microsoft is chasing the dragon.

I agree wholeheartedly. MS is throwing money to fix a problem that will never be fixed, while ignoring emerging markets in Europe, Africa, South America etc which continue to be Sony dominated. Japan doesn’t care. Use the resources to convince the rest of the world to.

I’d love to see sales figures for the consoles in SA. Would be nice to see where we fit in compared to USA, Japan etc. Is there any way you can use your magical worker elves to make this happen?
PS. This is more of a command than a request. I’m not saying that I’ll burn my computer in an act of protest if this doesn’t come to fruition… but I might.

We get told unofficial figures every so often, but platform distributors here in SA tend to be quite tight-lipped about official figures. I can say with absolute certainty that the Ps4 is outselling the X1 locally by a significant margin.

Xbox doesn’t even factor in. Freaking Yokai watch is THE most popular thing in Japan, Playstation is the closest brand that you will find these types of games on. Xbox should pull out while they can.

I think it kicks butt to be honest. It’s exactly what they need to do to start challenging PS4s position. I have an Xbox 360 and although I don’t think the backwards compatibility of the Xbox One would have stopped my buying a PS4 this gen (MS did a GREAT job pissing me off with all their DRM bullshit) it will do a lot for people in America and Europe I think.
