Kinect Star Wars reviews round-up

It’s a big day today for fans of the flannel-shirted George Lucas’ largest legacy – Star Wars. Kinect Star Wars, the game that’ll let you live out your Jedi fantasies without the limiting burden of a real, physical controller is finally in stores – bringing lightsabre swinging, pod-racing, Rancor stomping and intergalactic dancing to your home.

Reviews of the game have gone live – and are generally a little more positive than I would have expected.

Here’s what media outlets have scored the game :

The most common complaint seems to be that the Kinect tracking just isn’t as accurate and responsive as it should be. “Control is clumsy and vague, however, while Kinect simply can’t cope with any fancy fighting moves. So you’re stuck with broad, simple strokes, but even then it feels like the action on-screen is always one move behind what you’re actually doing,” says Eurogamer.

Overall, they say that “For the most part, Kinect Star Wars is a half-hearted grab bag of ideas, few of which feel fully formed or have been executed with any polish.” IGN says it’s “ultimately its more of a Star Wars-themed set of mediocre mini-games than the jedi epic fans are dying for.” Disappointing for something that was intended to be a flagship title for Kinect.

Microsoft previously pegged Kinect star Wars as one of the “core” Kinect titles headed for the motion controller – but it seems to have turned around on that.

"This is a game for anybody that is a Star Wars fan," senior product manager Glenn Gregory said to MCV. "It’s not The Old Republic, it’s not a game for core gamers that want to experience that kind of thing. It’s a great experience for people who love Star Wars like myself and want to share it with their families.

"When you look at the Jedi in Episode 1, they are not just waving their wrists around," he added. "There’s full body combat, lightsabers, force powers, and they are jumping and being acrobatic. And that is really a fun thing to do with Kinect."

Reviews be damned though; I think this game’s going to perform pretty well at retail – and might just sell a few Kinect units too.
