Metal Gear Solid V’s latest update sneaks in a Quiet surprise

I loved Metal Gear Solid V. Past tense because as time’s gone on, my opinion of the game has soured considerably – mostly thanks to post-release fiddling on Konami’s part. The inclusion of all of that FOB nonsense and the addition of insurance microtransactions, coupled with the half-baked, nonsensical story has turned what should have been one of the best games of this generation in to one of the most soul crushing.

Don’t get me wrong. The core gameplay is phenomenal, but the story isn’t – and the online nonsense, seemingly made to push microtransactions is even worse. The game’s just received another update that brings with it it…more FOB stuff, more microtransactions, and more convoluted nonsense!

Most of the new content and feature-set revolve around your Forward operating bases. There are new security devices, such as gun cameras and you can now invest in Anti-Reflex research’ which will shorten the amount of time an invader’s Reflex Mode is active.

You can now also spend your MB coins (which cost real money!) to buy yourself a third Forward Operating Base. The update also makes it easier to get the Chicken Hat and Lil Chicken hat if you’re seriously, seriously struggling with the single player campaign or are new to the game.

The most intriguing change though, is one that requires massive spoiler warnings so here, have some MASSIVE SPOILER WARNINGS

In the main game, once you’ve hit a certain point in the story, your mostly-naked mute Sniper companion, Quiet, pretty much defects, leaving your party. Now, thanks to the latest update, you can bring her back. The way to do that? Play mission eleven – the one where you first encounter the sniper. Easy enough. Only you have to play it seven times. And not kill Quiet. Do that, and she’ll return to your Mother base, available as a comparison character once more. It’s nonsensical, and pretty much craps all over the silly narrative that the game tried to weave, but I digress. Personally, I can’t help but feels it’s just a way to get people to spend more real money on costumes for her.

According to Konami, the update also makes these changes:

  • The top rankings for PF Rating and Espionage Rating will now be displayed.
  • Whereas until now only resources in your offline inventory could be sold, from now on your online inventory can also be sold.
  • The issue with certain DLC uniform equipment not having its advertised effect is now fixed.» more
  • In-game notifications of events and other news have been improved.

Konami, meanwhile, has sort-of confirmed that it’s getting ready to work on the next Metal Gear game. Whether or Not Kojima is involved this time, remains to be seen.
