Microsoft says “This Generation Will Be Longer”

Sony famously stated that the PS3 will last for 10 years and that you are investing in your future by picking one up, Microsoft on the other hand haven’t put a timeline down but were widely expected to replace the 360 in 2010/2011 with their next version.

However that plan may now be changing and we could see the 360 lasting for a little longer than originally planned. The reason behind this is that the 360 (and PS3) can easily be updated and upgraded using software only as the latest NXE has shown and at the same time no one seems to really be pushing the boundaries of the hardware at the moment.

Basically the worlds gamers are happy with the current quality of the games and I know I would be hard pressed to fork out more cash for a new console now as I am more than happy with the current quality.

I also think the fact that Microsoft is maintaining it’s lead over Sony has something to do with Chris Lewis stating

“So if you think of that scalability and the opportunity to enhance and develop what we do with this platform, then I think it’s very, very possible-and indeed appropriate-that this generation will be longer”

Why should Microsoft risk it’s position now with a new console? There is no reason to believe that they are going to lose their second spot anytime soon and until that becomes a possibility I don’t see them releasing a new console.

So my latest guess is that the new console will be coming out in 2012/2013.

agreed, I think it’s time to recap and learn from previous mistakes, come out with a monster that growls (silently) first time 🙂 I’m excited for the future but at the same time don’t have money to spend on getting a new x360… I wonder if the x360 arcade will be the next ps2? and if they’ll still develop games for it… or if they’ll ever stop developing games for the ps2??
