I still don’t really get Minecraft (though I do love me some LEGO) – but it’s a game that quite obviously resonates with many games. In fact, the game’s now sold over 9.2 million copies, of which 6 million were for the PC. Minecraft for the Xbox 360 has the distinction of being the fastest selling Xbox Live arcade title in history – makings its way to over a million Xbox 360’s in its first week.

It’s now even managed to loosen Call of Duty’s perpetual icy grip on the top of the Xbox Live Activity charts.

According to Major Nelson’s weekly Xbox Live Activity chart, the indie phenomenon is not only the number one Xbox Live Arcade title – as you’d expect – but it’s also managed to sneak in to the 2nd overall spot – previously held by Call of Duty Black Ops. The last time anything’s  even remotely rained on Call of Duty’s Xbox Live parade was Halo Reach in 2010.

It’s the first time in a long time that anything’s come between the reigning Call of Duty titles – and the first time an Xbox Live Arcade game has ever achieved the feat. For a niche, indie game to have that sort of impact is nothing short of remarkable

Here are the lists of the top 5 retail and arcade games respectively:

  1. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
  2. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
  3. Call of Duty: Black Ops
  4. FIFA 12
  5. Battlefield 3
  1. Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
  2. Trials Evolution
  3. The Walking Dead
  4. Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode II
  5. Castle Crashers
