Whilst many though the teaser for Persona 4 S was the Switch port of the beloved PS4 game, it turns out to be a Persona 5 Scramble which is nothing like Persona 5!
Despite releasing over two years ago, Persona 5 has managed to remain in the public consciousness through a series of new announcements and games. With Joker being released as a character in Ultimate Smash Bros. last week and a more detailed look at the expanded Persona 5: The Royal yesterday, Atlus and Koei Tecmo teamed up announced Persona 5 Scramble: The Phantom Strikers! Please note, that word is “Scramble” and not “Scrabble” so hopefully, you weren’t like me who sat down at a table set with hype only to be a served a plate of disappointment.
Persona 5: Scramble will play nothing like Persona 5 and will instead see the characters of the original game – as well as some seemingly new additions to the cast – fighting it out against hordes of wave-based enemies using a simple, yet spectacular combo system instead of the strategic turn-based action the series has usually utilised. Koei Tecmo, who is developing Persona 5 Scramble, is well known for the musou games which traditionally see players facing off against hundreds of enemies and absolutely shredding them; Think Dynasty Warriors or Fire Emblem Warriors. Basically, they’re power fantasies for anime fans.
The teaser trailer for Persona 5 Scramble was brief, containing few details about the game. Showing off Joker fighting alongside his persona Arsene against dozens of shadows, a new character was briefly teased. Whether this game will be a sequel to the events of Persona 5 or a reimagining of the same game in a different style is yet to be seen; what we do know is that the game will be launching on PS4 and Nintendo Switch with no release date confirmed yet.
