Riot teases Aurelion Sol – the first dragon champion for League of Legends

Aurelion Sol

“We will not be releasing the champion that you know as Ao Shin, but in the first half of this year we will be releasing a dragon champion. His name is (tentatively) Aurelion Sol.”

Remember when Riot said the above? It wasn’t that long ago mind you – it was just last week. Anyway, when I saw first half of the year, my mind automatically assumed that we would be seeing Aurelion Sol much later, in say, I don’t know, May or June.

As it turns out, we may be seeing this new dragon champion much sooner. Riot released the following  on their Facebook page a few days ago…

He has returned.

I am nowhere near a big enough League of Legends fan to know anything detailed about the above teaser, so I did some research. According to Blog of Legends, the last time a night like the above was seen was in the storyline of Mount Targon:

The summit is said to be veiled in a cascade of shimmering light, through which wonders and far-distant vistas can be glimpsed, the bewildering, tantalizing visions of a mythical domain beyond. Despite attaining their goal of reaching the summit, most fail this last test, turning away in fear from this inhuman realm. Of the rare few who press on, most never return, while others may reappear minutes, years or even centuries later.

That certainly describes the teaser animation perfectly. There’s a summit, as well as a beautiful night sky with a portal or something of sorts. What lies beyond?

Thanos apparently, I mean, Aurelion Sol of course! Here’s his teaser trailer…

Oh my. How epic? As he is, Aurelion Sol looks a little er… overpowered (he crushes a star in his hand for crying out loud). What abilities will he have, and how will he actually fit into Summoner’s Rift? I’m sure we’ll have answers soon enough!
