Home Gaming Rumor: Xbox Live Free?

Rumor: Xbox Live Free?

47 second read

So today I got a message from a friend of mine on Xbox Live saying that I should change my motto to "Xbox Live should be free", as Microsoft are debating on whether they should make Live free or carry on charging us for the service.

Now this is just a rumor, and as such has not been confirmed by Microsoft. There are, however, a couple of questions that just keep bothering me for example, if Microsoft turns Xbox Live into a free service, how are they going to compensate those of us with Gold memberships? Also are they even going to compensate us?

Therefore right now something just tells me this will always and forever be a rumor, I don’t think Microsoft are willing to let go of their "gravy train" just like that.

I doubt it would ever happen. It cost Microsoft a fortune to host all that content up on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace.

This is just a rumour, a bad one at that.
Think about it would you prefer to pay R70 every month or have Live for free? Would anyone on this planet prefer to pay? So doing a customer survey to see if Live should be free is just stupid.

Is it a gravy train? I don’t think so I would prefer to pay R70 a month to have a true online system instead of the current bad attempt that is PSN… However when Sony gets a real system going for free I hope Microsoft will counter it…

I can’t believe there are so many people going along with this rumour. I mean ok say a hundred thousand gamers do this, so what? how many of them will leave xbox live forever if it doesn’t become free? If they don’t play on the xbox what are they going to play? Playstation 3 with its 5 games worth playing? Wii with its annoying controller and equally annoying games?
Xbox live is the best online gaming system I can think of and so what if you have to pay for it? If you can afford the Xbox 360 Premium console and games to play it then a small fee every month shouldn’t be a problem.
Some Gamers just got Greedy and got the attention of others like them.

Personally I really couldn’t care as far as I’m concerned any service that is good deserves to be paid out, also allows for the “We want our money’s worth” argument 😛

You want Xbox Live to be free? Great, then be ready for a loss in some or all of the features. Think about it, the money you pay doesn’t go straight to the pockets of Microsoft. It pays the thousands of people that work everyday to keep the service running. You may not know what it takes to keep the service running, however think about it. It takes servers, bandwidth, software and hardware engineers. None of this stuff is free, which is why the Xbox Live service is not free. That’s like saying everyone send a letter to your cable provider to ask for it to be free. Doesn’t work and there’s reasons. If you can’t pay for it, then maybe you should look elsewhere for another service.

Xbox Live is definately better off NOT free. In fact, there would probably be even more issues if it were free.

For people who are complaining about paying monthly, they could easily just pay a flat out 50 dollars for a year. It’s not that hard folks =/

Why would Microsoft make the service free when it is already so succesfull when people are paying for it?

You are correct in saying this will always be a rumour.

If xbox live was free then I would go out right now and buy one. £40 a month is theft in my opinion because live offers nothing special except and IM which sucks because most games have an ingame message interface. Also, gamertags suck compared to Miis and Home avatars. Voice chat is enabled on PS3 games already and I’m certain Wii will get it soon in order to make a Wii sequel of Phoenix Ace Attorney (the one where you scream OBJECTION at your DS lol). If you need wireless adapter too then it costs a heck of a lot because £50 ain’t exactly cheap is it? Also, I you add the price of the PS3 bundle UK (PS3 60GB, two Wirelesss SIXAXIS controllers and two games) its £400. If you get all that and add the features PS3 has to a 360 like HDDVD drive and wireless adapter play and charge kits etc etc then the 360 can cost upto £126 more!!! Microsoft hear us our because you are missing out on hundreds more gamers who only shun the 360 because of live fees. I am getting a PS3 as a gift next July for good GCSE results so I can’t buy it myself but I could get a 360 and get xbox live but refuse to pay for such features as every other console features them for free. I have a Wii and its amazing. I play the 360 frequently at a friends (who refuses to pay for live) and do not deny its nice hardware (not as feature rich as PS3 which makes PS3 better) but I would love to have exclusives like gears of war and halo etc etc.

    Microsoft, sort it.

    Army against live fees :D….

Who can spot the guy who isn’t playing online, to much time on your hands dude…

Oh and it isn’t £40 a month, it’s £40 a year… BIG difference. I would prefer it if live were free but only if it kept the same quality as it has now. I don’t mind paying at all though.

Live should be free, its that simple. Microsoft does not need anymore of our money. All of you saying it shuld not be free are pothetic, reminding your mommys to pay, or using there credit cards all the time.. Microsoft and xbox live will be fine if it was free. Live has been the same price ever since its launch, all those extras they added with the 360 makes no difference to me.

I know this topic is hella late but microsoft knows that people are sheep! We are paying in essence for microsoft to have the ability and opportunity to sell us “content” from the comforts of our own living room! I feel so violated but i cant stop paying them my 50 bucks a year!!!!SUCH IS LIFE!
