Still haven’t had enough Star Wars goodness for the day yet after that incredible trailer for Rogue One this morning? Well, try this rumour on for size. It seems that Lando Calrissian, the galaxy’s smoothest cape-wearing businessman is going to be showing up in the still untitled young Han Solo movie. Lando was one of the key players in one of the biggest events in Han Solo’s life as the young Corellian smuggler won the Millennium Falcon off of Lando in a game of sabacc (a card game in the Star Wars universe), so this should come as no surprise at all.
And according to a report from Birth.Movies.Death., who are generally on the money with things like this, Lucasfilm already know who they want to play that young, probably already cape-wearing Lando Calrissian: Community and Magic Mike XXL star Donald Glover. BMD make sure to point that no offers have been put forward and no deals have been accepted, but they’re just hearing that Glover is currently the first choice for the gig. As we recently learned Alden Ehrenreich was co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s first choice to play the young Han Solo – they literally saw him first – but they still went on to audition more than 2000 more actors, only to come right back to Ehrenreich in the end. I’m assuming they won’t be something like that again!
I’ve been a huge fan of Glover’s since his Community days (TROY AND ABED IN THE MOOOOORNING!) so I actually have no problem with this casting, as he’s definitely shown he has the necessary silky smooth charm and rapscallion wit, and can even turn up the serious dramatics if needs be. My only concern will be him matching original actor Billy Dee Williams’ golden voice, which for me has always been such a huge part of Lando’s character, since he uses it to get himself out of (and occasionally into) trouble so often.
What do you guys think of this rumour? Have somebody else in mind for the role of a young Lando Calrissian?
