Rumour: Ryan Gosling, Zac Efron met with JJ Abrams about STAR WARS: EPISODE VII. Leonardo DiCaprio was in but left for another movie

Can somebody please pass the salt? It seems we’re running short after using up a whole lot of it on those Batman casting rumours this morning. But we’re going to have restock on sodium chloride now, for this new set of rumours. This time we’re talking possible casting choices for Disney’s highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII, dealing with a couple of ol’ House of Mouse favourites and one angry slave owner in the form of Ryan Gosling, Zac Efron and Leonardo DiCaprio.

The story comes from Latino Review, who used to be quite on the money with these things but lately has been about as accurate as Helen Keller at an archery contest, so start huffing those salt crystals. Lets run down these rumour from least likeliest to most. And to get us started, LR’s sources are claiming that Leonardo DiCaprio met with Disney and director JJ Abrams about some unspecified role in Episode VII, however he has been subsequently ruled out of contention for the gig as he wants to join the long delayed live-action adaptation of Robotech.

“Aw nuts!” said the 6 people on the internet who were considering him for Star Wars, “Told ya so” said the 3 people on the internet who were considering him for Robotech.

Next up, LR’s claim that not only did permanently photoshopped actor Ryan Gosling also meet with Disney to discuss a role, but that said role would have him becoming the latest member of the Skywalker clan, specifically Luke Skywalker’s son, 30 years after Return of the Jedi. Now with Gosling currently planning, according to the folks at Vulture, to “take a break” from acting while he focuses on his fledgeling directing career (he’s supposed to start production on his directorial debut How To Catch A Monster soon), I just don’t see this happening. Especially since Gosling doesn’t really do genre franchise films. Although, if there was one geeky gig with enough clout to convince him otherwise, it would possibly be the chance to play a Skywalker descendant in Star Wars.

Next up on the rumor-role is the claim that along with Gosling, ex-High School Musical star Zac Efron has also had a pow-wow with JJ and the gang. No word on his rumoured character’s last name though. Now the one big thing going for this rumour is of course the fact that Efron already has quite the relation with Disney, since they were the ones who kicked off his career. He’s also not that picky when it comes to roles (not that he can afford to be, with some hit-and-miss movie choices lately), so I can easily see him joining the production.

Though he’s most well known for his pictures adorning 12-year old girls’ bedroom walls, he has proven on a couple of occasions that he is much more than just dreamy eyes and a two-step (see: Charlie St. Cloud, The Paperboy and upcoming Parkland), meaning that Disney could certainly do a lot worse if he was to join the production.

With Disney’s D23 expo just two weeks away, we hopefully won’t have that long to wait to find out for real if any of this has some merit, or whether the guys at Latino Review have been sniffing their own salt. Bath salts, that is .
