rysetrailer

For some or other reason, Crytek’s Xbox One exclusive Ryse: Son of Rome has consistently failed to give me, well, a rise. I played a single player demo at E3, and a multiplayer one at Gamescom, and both times, even though it’s ditched the overreliance on QTE’s, I left feeling little more than ambivalence. That’s not to say that the game doesn’t look nice, or play well – it’s just without any real context, it’s just a dude in shiny armour killing other dudes. This trailer, from a Gamespot feature, changes that.

Check this out.

And man, that looks pretty good, even if it is running at 900p. And according to Microsoft’s Albert Penello, the whole thing was put together using in-game footage.

That’s pretty damned shiny, looks smooth as all heck and quite probably quite fun to play.

Thing is, I’m the editor, so I proof everything else – but nobody does my stuff, and it’s established that it’s nigh impossible to proof your own stuff, because the brain sees what it expects to.

Kak excuse, but it is what it is. It’s why there’s a proportionally higher number of silly stuff ups in my work. We also run on a pretty tight schedule, and everyone is generally really busy. It’s not an excuse, just an explanation.

I doubt it. The last time we had any real innovation was when Glen Schofield decided to get rid of the HUD in Deadspace and also gave us the objective line. Fable 2 then copied that with the cookie trail.

Cliffy got rid of the health bar in Gears of War and gave us the trigger reload and cover system.

Bioware gave us that cool speech wheel in Mass Effect.

Ubisoft gave us a Prince of Persia where you cannot die. I think it worked as the pace was quite fast.

Those are the type of things that I want in games. Not innovative interfaces like Wii, Kinect and touch pads.

It is all Co-Op centric now anyway so that is probably the field that we will see more new things appearing in.

I recently played Telltale’s The Wolf among us and am currently replaying Heavy Rain, and I have to say, QTEs have their place in gaming. They’re awesome for point-and-click adventure titles, but I don’t know why I get warning signs for Ryse.

The only other game I’ve ever had this much of a disliking is (any) COD. There’s just something about it that rubs me the wrong way. Maybe it’s because Chrysis is involved. I’ve always considered them to be grossly overrated….

The odd thing is, I want a game featuring a Roman soldier, Damnit!

For sure, I’m not against QTE but I don’t like it being a replacement for actual combat. Look at Shadow of the Colossus compared to God of War. GoW has you pressing timed inputs to jump on a huge enemy, then wiggle the stick to rip his head off. Whereas SotC has you climbing these huge things with your own input and holding on for dear life while you try to attack them.

Absolutely, I actually find the push towards more cinematic gaming to be distracting, and here’s the thing, your focus isn’t on the action, but rather on that next button prompt.

So who’s benefiting from the cinematic QTE? The player’s focus isn’t on how pretty it looks but rather on catching that X or O…. That leaves whoever is watching you, and when was the last time, you had a crowd watching you game?

Shucks… the last time that happened was when I was playing Rockman (Megaman) on my Golden China, with running commentary from my gran.

          “No Jim, go up.. UP!”
          “Ouma… I can’t go up”
“Jim.. focus boy, oh… you’re dead.. Better restart.”

HAHAHA, your Ouma pushed you hard man…grand parents were like that lol and exactly, sure it LOOKS awesome…but I mean , you’re not DOING anything besides taping a button. At least with Shenmue, the button prompts were actually integrated in the current scenario. You were being attacked by goons so press left to dodge left , press a to attack. GoW was like twirl the stick all nice like to rip an enemy in two. lol I think , like you said, QTE works quite well with Adventure games like Walking Dead

          • Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)

            October 18, 2013 at 09:20

Yep, GOW1 did it perfectly, because it mixed the QTEs into the action, and it wasn’t overwhelming. Shenmue is also an excellent example. Uncharted as well (except for that final fight in the first game… now that was going retard with QTEs)

It just seems like this is going to be one big pile at launch. That really only leaves Dead Rising 3 to titillate me.

There’s this strange unwritten rule in Hollywood that Romans always have British accents…. I don’t get it either, but it’s also like how the red coats are always the villains in American flicks. One day I’d like to play a red coat who isn’t a dick 🙁

You’re saying you want to play as an evil Colonising Imperialist Agent?

Julius may have something to say about this….

Well. To be fair. British accents are a fairly recent phenomenon. And we don’t want Romans appearing FOREIGN. That would mean civilisation isn’t West Western. It’d be Central Western. No one wants that. Also.. It’s not like the Germanic stuff (which always just sounds – well – like gargling water).

      Lol.

    I just stumbled on this.

“One of the questions asked is about the potential of a port for “The Last of Us”
to the PS4. Eric Monacelli responded by saying that the development
currently “have no plans” to bring the new intellectual property to the
    next-generation system.”

Now if SONY upscale a port to the PS4 and give us backwards compatibility CONSIDER THE XBONE DEAD.

I am all set to buy a PS3 and catch up on those 20 AAA Titles and then maybe an XBONE in 2015 while I wait for all of the Overheating issues to be sorted out. Im an XBOT on the fence.

SO WHY HAVE THE BIG WIGS OVER AT SONY HQ not thought of this?

Instant early install base for the PS4.

Yeah, but that wasn’t an overheating issue per se. I recently watched another video and it’s actually Knack that crashed on the poor thing (rather than it overheating). You can see them effortlessly exiting the game going to the UI and continuing.

But yet again, some bright spark put the PS4 in a closed box….

What is it with putting PS4s into boxes all of a sudden? It baffles my mind.

The old boxes as from what I remember had built in fans. Looks like they forgot about those… Plus in closed box the extra heat accumulating will effect performance. Ideally should be well ventilated as any pc or current gen console.

On the bright side, it’s good to know that if you do live in the Sahel and you don’t have air conditioning, your PS4 will shut itself off if the mercury hits insanity.

Or if you plan on living in a tiny box, it’s probably best to invest in board games….

The Wii is remarkably well built… just a pity I still feel the pain of a man who owns a GameCube! Will we ever forgive Nintendo, old man?

I would assume so, I mean if there’s one company that can’t have a repeat of the RROD saga, it’s ol’ MIcrosoft. Imagine if that were to happen, on the back of all the 180s and the DRM funk…

There’d literally be blood in the streets!

Yeah, but it’s not over-clocked by that much.

But, I sincerely hope that the Bone doesn’t go through something similar to. RROD… because that really sullied the good times I had with my xbox 360… :/ It’s never cool when your launch console dies after only two months, and they don’t even want to acknowledge that there is a problem…

            Gah!

Yeah my elite has been solid so far, but I still have this fear that one day it’ll just die on me.

But, I clean its vents every so often, and during summer time there’s even a fan on the consoles, making sure that both my xbox and its PS3 lover are cool.

I am happy to hear that you look after your consoles. Drives me up the wall when people just don’t care.. I clear air vents regularly and when not playing and console is off have nice cloth over it stopping dust accumulating

The first few years always have high failure rates anyway.

But If I wanted to kill my competition I will add a feature that they do not have and what all the customers want.

backwards compatibility. That way I do not have to buy a PS3 to play its fantastic library and be swayed later on to jump the fence again.

If the PS4 had backwards compatibility it would be a WHITEWASH.

But we all know that they are all in bed with each other. I really need to read Orwell’s 1984.

Very risky! Because if your console is a dud, you won’t be able to get it replaced – nor will you be covered by a warranty. I was one of those fools who imported their launch xbox 360s from the UK, and I still regret doing so.

The good thing about waiting for an official launch is that when it finally launches in Mzansi NamBabwe, hopefully it’ll be a newer generation with some of the flaws of the previous one worked out, and you’re protected by that year or two year warranty.

Yerp! Died under two months… At the time, I thought it was a random occurrence (remember this was still when Microsoft was adamant RROD was only affecting a small proportion of gamers. Fuckers were lying through their teeth.)

Bought another console later that year (after catching up on my PS2 backlog), and same issue. Managed to get that replaced with a refurbished third from whatsisface – the guys who folded and were replaced by the current xbox guys. That died within a few months. I vowed never to buy another, sold most of my xbox games (except for Gears of War and Saints Row) and started replacing my collection with PS3 copies.

Never felt so ashamed in my life – but then the missus bought me the elite for my birthday. At the time, I thought she was just being cruel, but its been running fine for the last 4 or so years – knock on wood

LoL, there was an Assassins Creed 4 Playstation Advert before the video started playing 😛
This game looks good. Based on the video, it might have the looks, gameplay and immersive story combination that I want. I will probably get this in 2015 as I will not be an early adopter of the next gen, but this game might help me be a month or two earlier.

I wonder if they will port it to ps4 later and let it run in full glorious 1080p. Any news why the xbox one cant run it at full HD? I’m sure the pc version will be able to.
