SEEEGAAAAA: Now we know all the games to be included with the Sega Mega-Drive/Genesis Mini

With Hollywood discovering the kind of power that be whipped around the place when your pour nostalgia into anything, it was only a matter of time before some CEO’s in the game industry took a puff of their comically fat cigar and said, “Yeah. Let’s do that too”. Such is the recent trend of re-releasing older video game consoles and bundling them with some of the most beloved games over their hay days. Nintendo put out a “Classic Mini” versions of the NES and SNES, pushing Sony to follow suit and fail dramatically with the PlayStation Classic. SEGA is the latest in what will doubt be a much longer line of miniaturised consoles in the future with the SEGA Genesis (or Mega Drive for those who prefer cool names) Mini and yesterday they finally revealed the full roster of games coming to the tiny console.

What Nintendon't

While SEGA had already made most of the games known to the public they announced the last 12 to be added, bringing up the total to 42. That’s quite a number; it’s more than the 30 titles available on the NES Mini and dwarfs the measly 20 games on the PlayStation Classic. The additions announced yesterday includes Virtua Fighter 2, Road Rash 2, Strider and Kid Chameleon to name but a few. The full list now looks something like this:

  1. Sonic the Hedgehog
  2. Ecco the Dolphin
  3. Castlevania: Bloodlines
  4. Space Harrier 2
  5. Shining Force
  6. Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine
  7. ToeJam & Earl
  8. Comix Zone
  9. Altered Beast
  10. Gunstar Heroes
  11. Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse
  12. World of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck
  13. Thunder Force III
  14. Super Fantasy Zone
  15. Shinobi III
  16. Streets of Rage 2
  17. Earthworm Jim
  18. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
  19. Contra: Hard Corps
  20. Landstalker
  21. Mega Man: The Wily Wars (This is a compilation of the first three Mega Man games)
  22. Street Fighter 2′: Special Champion Edition
  23. Ghouls ‘n Ghosts
  24. Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle
  25. Beyond Oasis
  26. Golden Axe
  27. Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium
  28. Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball
  29. Vectorman
  30. Wonder Boy in Monster World
  31. Tetris
  32. Darius
  33. Virtua Fighter 2
  34. Alisia Dragoon
  35. Monster World IV
  36. Kid Chameleon
  37. Road Rash II

As I said some absolutely A-grade certified bangers (Ed: and also Altered Beast). Virtua Fighters 2, Castlevania: Bloodlines and Earthworm Jim? Consider my boat floated. As far as these smaller versions of classic consoles is concerned, one can only hope the emulation used by Sega is up to scratch and not that cheap stuff Sony used for the PlayStation Classic. The Genesis Mini will be launching on September 19th of this year and at the time of writing (and if my sums are correct) should set you back around R1300, which for 42 games doesn’t seem like too much damage if they’re done well.

I got the Mini SNES, at that stage for my son. But now that he’s playing on my PS4, I’m not gonna go pay over a thousand bucks for games I already have.

Megadrive collection on Steam with an Xbox controller does the job perfectly.

Jassis, nostalgia. I always tried to phone in, because I knew a way to get a lot of rings early on through some secrets – but I never could get through. Besides which, the delay would just have ended up with me getting spiked.

    Streets of Rage 2
    Ecco the Dolphin
    Sonic The Hedgehog

No Red Zone? Ranger X? Alien Soldier? General Chaos? Jungle Strike?

32X simulation also handles Virtua Racing like a dream.
