Sony’s PS4 is launching at a significantly cheaper price than the Xbox One. SCEA CEO Jack Tretton sees this as a positive, but it doesn’t guarantee the console’s success.
When the PS3 was initially launched, it was the more expensive console. This was a drawback that took quite some time to overcome. Now, Tretton is happy to be the cheaper option:
I think ultimately, the gamer looks at ten-year product lifecycles; they look at the software offerings; they look at the value proposition. And the lowest priced system isn’t always the most successful, but being cheaper than your competition is never a bad thing.
When asked what was the most important thing to “get right” with a launch like PS4, Tretton said it was communicated the value of the system:
The most important thing to get right is the consumer proposition, the value proposition. That people say, ‘I saw it, it looks great, I’ve got to have it.’ And if that’s the answer, then you’ve got a winner on your hands.
I must say, I have to have a next generation console. I can’t wait to get some hands-on time with them – I’m seriously hoping that they are both playable at rAge. I will happily wait in line (or more likely push and show cleavage) to get my hands on those new controllers. However, with PS4 launching locally first, and being cheaper, I think I know which console I will get first… unless Witcher 3 comes out and we have to throw all our money at upgrading the gaming PC.

Sorry, got distracted there for a second… Witcher 3 looks amazing! And it’s a near-as-makes-no-difference launch title on the next-gen consoles. Can you imagine what next-gen titles will look like in 4 – 5 years as the developers master them? Damn, I’m excited for this!

It was restarting the nVidia drivers randomly and finally it just stopped powering up. 1st replacement has also given up…

A 7950 is the ATi equivalent, that would suit me fine.
I run multiple monitors so I need a decent card (not for gaming, still a 1 screen gamer coz I get motion sickness)

CPU processing power is far more important these days imo. I had to yank my 5870 out of my arcade to use while waiting for a warranty replacement and it still performs admirably but it’s a noisy bastard.

When both consoles look and play the same AAA multi plat games and the exclusives are to little to get my gamegasim on, then it all comes down to price.
SONY are giving the consumer OPTIONS. Something Microbrains are not.
