I used to be 100% certain that Sony would never charge for multiplayer gaming over the PSN as that is still one of the major features they have over the Xbox 360. In reality I couldn’t care less as my Gold subscription isn’t much and it only annoys me once a year when it expires.
However back to the point, I am no longer 100% convinced that Sony won’t introduce a small charge for online gaming. The latest salvo on the subject has come from Sony’s Peter Dille who claims
“I can confirm that [charging for PSN] as well. That’s something that we’re actively thinking aboutâ€
We are obviously going to be seeing a 2 tier PSN in the near future and the only question that really remains is what Sony are going to charge for.
Personally I don’t see anyone paying money simply to get a demo a week earlier or to get first access to Home avatar goodies. Maybe you wouldn’t be able to message anyone unless you pay but you will still be able to play online?
Someone may beat Sony with the stupid stick again and we could see them announce that online gaming is free but you can’t communicate at all without paying…
Do you have any ideas on which part of the PSN is worth paying for bar the online gaming ability?

The only thing that I can think of is cross-game chat, which I don’t think I’ve ever used on Live, but some guys seem to think it’s pretty important.

Well if it means updating that crappy XMB eventually im all for it, i want something more attractive to look at when im browsing.. and maybe some new software releases, like a PS2 emulator/faster web browser. Or not to disconnect me from PSN now and again… Updating to faster servers… Takes me ages to connect to an Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 match its insane.

I like the XMB – probably because I’ve grown accustomed to it since the early days of the PSP. I find it understated and classy.

Yeah, I would pay for PS2 compatibility. Need to replay Shadow of the Colosus.
