At E3 in 2009, which in the minds of most gamers was forever ago, Sony wowed us with a trailer for The Last Guardian, the last of a trichotomy of games, following Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. It was mesmerising, and beautiful. Very little real information on the game has been available since then. And Sony’s not really ready to talk about it now either.

"We’re waiting for the right time to re-introduce The Last Guardian in an appropriate way," Sony Worldwide boss Shuhei Yoshida told GI.Biz "I can’t… Well, the game is in development, and it’s well staffed, and Ueda-san is here, working – even though he’s not a Sony employee, he’s dedicated to the product. But we’re not ready to update yet."

The last we’d really heard, following the departure of lead designer Fumito Ueda, was that the game was on hiatus, but Yoshida claims that it never was; pointing the finger of blame of that on Jack Tretton.

"Hiatus, I never… It was Jack Tretton!" said Yoshida. "He used that term, and I said no, hiatus is misleading. It was a hiatus in terms of releasing new information. The game has never stopped – the team has always been here. They’re going through the re-engineering of the game, so the team size is smaller, because it’s more engineering focused right now."

As for which platform we’ll see the game when it eventually does see release?

"Ahh… That, I cannot talk about."

My guess? It’s almost certainly being re-engineered to fit on the PlayStation 4, where it will almost certainly mesmerise people anew.
