Funcom’s latest MMO, the Secret World was released in June this year. Beyond the pretty repetitive gameplay bog-standard MMO gameplay, it’s actually got some rather intriguing narrative. We’ve had a pool going to see how long it would be until the thing went free-to-play; bets pretty much pegged it as giving the game 6 months before becoming free. That’s not quite happened, but Funcom has subscriptions.

Funcom’s adopted a new payment model that’s not entirely different from Arenanet’s Guild Wars. you can now buy the game once, and play forever, without having to pay anything more. They do, however, have a couple of different monetisation options. Those who wish to still pay subscriptions will be given special bonuses, like items that give extra experience points, discounts on store purchases and bonus points – which can be used to purchase DLC. Users can also purchase items and extras from the in-game store.

Those who wish to pay nothing won’t be locked out of any aspect of the game, which is quite nice although it does seem there’s a slight element of “paying to win.”

Still, if the thought of a massively multiplayer game filled with conspiracy theories, the “buy now, play forever” model is pretty tempting.
