Microsoft believes that since they are over delivering in value by such an extent that gamers are going to be flocking to the job centre to earn enough money to buy the most expensive console on the market.
Okay that’s not true but it does bring back some memories of the last console manufacturer who thought that launching a console at the $499 and $599 price tag would be acceptable.
It all ended in tears for Sony until they could release the slim with a large price cut and could eventually start clawing back that massive lead that Microsoft had snatched with their well prices, game loving, Xbox 360.
The latest PR misstep from Microsoft has been committed by Don Mattrick who believes that selling the console for $599 isn’t a ridiculous price point, stating
“It’s a lower number than some of the analysts had forecasted”
“We’re over-delivering value against other choices I think consumers can get. Any modern product these days you look at it [and] $499 isn’t a ridiculous price point. We’re delivering thousands of dollars of value to people, so I think they’re going to love it when they use it.”
I think many people would argue that the Xbox One isn’t filled with thousands of dollars of value and is rather older generation hardware, bundled with a very expensive camera that most of the gamers do not want.
But I do feel for Don and Microsoft a bit. We can all complain about the price of $499 (R5500 – R6000) but that’s less than an iPhone 5, iPad or pretty much all TV’s so it’s not really an expensive piece of tech.
Then again with most of those options you aren’t being asked to fork out over R600 an application and forced to stay online or else everything gets disabled.
From the hands on mini-reviews I’ve seen so far of the Xbox One it really is a solid piece of tech and all Microsoft need to do to make the next generation exciting is drop the online check in option. Just do it Microsoft.
