This is why GTA V isn’t on PC yet

This is how I picture accountants at these eventsLast night the bean counters at Take Two Interactive released their financials for the last year and there were some surprising announcements in between all the tedious non-GAAP and loan note talking.

First up let’s take a look at the juicy sales numbers.

Borderlands 2 has now become 2K’s biggest selling title with the latest retail push helping the title sail past the 8.5 million mark. 2K, owned by Take Two, also pulled in some great sales of their signature NBA 2K series with the latest version, NBA2K14, selling over 5 million units which has pushed the franchise over the 35 million mark to date.

But the real money spinner was obviously Grand Theft Auto V which has now officially sold over 32 million copies already and is still widely expected to earn a lot more money with upcoming DLC, Xbox One and PS4 versions as well as the much-anticipated PC version.

The rest of the income earned is spread across XCOM, Bioshock, WWE, Civ 5 and GTA: San Andreas to name a few.

However those aren’t the most surprising numbers from the announcement. If you scroll all the way down Take Two have also given the breakdown of sales according to mobile, console or PC and the results are mind-blowing.

Consoles vs The Master Race

In the 2012 financial year the breakdown was as follows

  • Console – 80%
  • PC – 18%
  • Mobile – 2%

A clear lead for the console market which is a bit of a shock since Max Payne 3 was released during that time on all platforms.

But fast forward to today and the breakdown for 2013 sales is vastly different

  • Console – 97%
  • PC – 3%
  • Mobile – 0%

Who's the master race now?

To put it bluntly Take Two is now simply a console house with that 3% barely even worth the effort of porting games over. Games like NBA2K, Borderlands 2 and XCOM: Enemy Within are debatably better on the console and with consoles having total domination inside the company you can understand why top titles like Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto V simply aren’t on the immediate horizon for PC gamers.

Do we have to mention the obvious factor of piracy being a major issue on the PC and that is possibly why Take-2 are investing more into consoles than the platform of the master race?

Sales tactics and Digital vs Retail

Take Two’s new sales plan also includes bundles with their next two bundles being Borderlands 2 & Dishonoured hitting retailers on the 11th of February along with a second, decidedly odd bundle of Skyrim & Bioshock Infinite which would make a perfect Valentine’s present for that special person in your life.

And for all of those, like me, who was worried that digital sales would ruin the typical retail experience it is nice to see that Take Two’s digital sales only accounted for 3% of all their sales. Again with GTA V skewing that results quite badly. Last year digital accounted for 22% of sales as a comparison.

The last bit of interesting info is that North America counts for 45% of all Take Two sales with the rest of the world combined making up the other 55% with no region being big enough to get a special mention.

Indeed they are… Taking into account that a console is just a PC with a limiting native OS on it. You can’t code a game on a console.

In the end consoles would not exist without PCs. For some reason people look past this fact. It’s weird really. Kind of like people are in denial.

In the end people who only use consoles tend to only play games on it and maybe watch some TV.

Even though I’m a console gamer, I would have loved to have a decent gaming PC for RTS or space and flight simulators but as it is, I have a console for gaming and a notebook for the rest.

Thanks for the info but I can’t justify having a PS4, a personal laptop, a work laptop, and a gaming PC and nobody is taking my PS4 away from me. In a couple of years I might convince myself to get a new PC but it’s not even on my list of priorities yet.

My main gaming rig runs on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit with a 4770K @ 4.4GHz + 2 GTX 780 Ti, but I also have an older rig with a Phenom II 6 core 1100T @ 3.3GHz + 1 GTX 550 Ti which was built for under $1,000 USD and it still smokes…it’s mainly for older games and still running on XP Pro SP3.

Plus, with a PC you can upgrade components over time to always have a top of the line machine capable of playing ANYTHING game designers come up with. You don’t have to buy a whole new $500 console every 2 years. Just the occasional GPU or CPU upgrade.

Precisely…and if you already have a decent CPU which can be overclocked, you won’t need to upgrade it for several years. Heck, I may not need to do anything until Skylake comes out:

            May 31, 2014 at 14:37

I assume you mean every 1 to 2 years? The answer is well, NO. My PC is 3 years old and still outperforms new gen consoles, and for the price of a new console I can upgrade to a PC that will make current gen consoles bleed green with envy.

            June 1, 2014 at 03:35

You have to buy a whole new console every time they come out with one. I don’t have to buy a whole new PC, just components as technology evolves.

            June 15, 2014 at 06:11

Why do you have to upgrade this blows my mind why people think this. You purchase parts that last 4-5 years to play on ultra then you upgrade again when new games come out. While consoles end up having either super dumbed down graphics or 15fps, Just take a look at gta v for xbox 360 15fps if your lucky that not even playable dude. Id rather build something thats going to last than some weak machine that is outdated at launch *cough* xbone/ps4 *cough*

Under $500 if you don’t count the peripherals such as screen. In most cases it’s cheaper than new-gen consoles + tv screen.

          • SUGI PULA

            February 26, 2014 at 19:56

Yeah, agreed…$1,000 w/o peripherals could build a very competent rig. For half of that amount, you may still beat current gen console specs…and you’ll be able to upgrade later…which should be very easy considering how much money you’ll save on games, mandatory online fees and other console schemes.

The Thing that bugs me is that alot of these games are made on PC but arent natively put onto PC first……..its so backwards and i quite frankly think its game developers faults for not promoting the PC as the superior platform when it would be easier to code for, they do it on there anyways. Theyre just going for all the 10 year olds that dont know how to use a PC when tbh not everyone torrents and if they had better encryption it wouldnt be worth cracking

PC’s are great for playing games, too.

That is, if you want the best graphics possible. Steam is trying to convert PC gaming into a console experience, all new PC games come with controller options….Who wouldn’t want the power of 2 PS4’s in one? It’s hilarious that people are really that ignorant of PC superiority. It really doesn’t matter when you can hack PS3, PS4, 360, & Xbox One controllers without a problem. It isn’t perfect yet but PC’s have almost always developed engines/games….Have you considered that new Microsoft & Sony consoles use PC architecture? Well, it’s not really rocket science, PC gaming is preparing to develop…It’s not just keyboard & mouse gaming, it’s now becoming more like a console. Steam’s new game streaming feature is also pretty epic. I can play a game in my room, then pick it right back up in my living room. If you fail to recognize superiority, I salute you for paying less for less.

Yeah but many devs have already said, piracy isn’t what loses them the money. Its a silly argument – people have been pirating games for decades. On floppy disks, it was as easy as copy/paste. Devs still made the games.

Have we forgotten that developing games for PC requires ALOT more testing and Quality Assurance. Unlike consoles, there isn’t a standard PC Dev box, you need to cater for a myriad of hardware combinations which are changing pretty often, AMD vs Intel, AMD vs Nvidia, different OS versions, different motherboards/audio etc. Whereas for a console game, they only need to look at tops 3 different standardized development boxes.

In the end Devs lurve the consoles coz it’s less work, also less pirating.

x86 CPU architecture and DirectX video are about as standardized as it gets, and every major PC hardware manufacturer complies with them. Aside from the infrequent occurance of a video card manufacturer failing to provide a driver update, there’s no concern for compatibility with PC developers, else these small-team indy titles would never see the light of day. The largest concern is affording a variety of graphic settings to tweak, which, if you console people could access them, are already available for modification within the game’s configuration files. The devs would have to create a frontend for them. That’s the extent of extra work.

And anyway, most multiplatform games these days are developed on multiplatform engines and ported to their destination console. That tired “PC testing and QA is a logistical nightmare” argument doesn’t/has never held water, but people keep using it regardless. I get that you guys don’t tend to know as much about these things, but come on now. If you don’t know, at least don’t pretend that you do.

The devs love consoles because they hold the largest market share. It’s a simple concept.

And you are wrong with the less pirating. Modded consoles are everywhere. GTA 5 was pirated before it was released for the consoles. They also caused a hack to the online version that rendered honest players to having their money taken away also. But I agree with those under me that this is a better arguement.

          • Sageville

            February 20, 2014 at 09:50

Surely you cannot be suggesting that because there is evidence of console pirating, that there is more console pirating than PC pirating, coz that reasoning is just plain wrong.

          • thatguy

            February 28, 2014 at 05:01

As console become more advanced, it will just be that much easier to pirate games on them, largest market share leading more pirates to focus efforts there.. Piracy is not a relevant issue in the issue of releasing games for consoles or PCs, it’s nothing more than a lame ass excuse. If it’s only on console, and enough people want to pirate it, they will.

GTA 5 was pirated and released for the consoles before the actual release date. And also the HUGE hack for GTA Online from those with modded consoles running around giving out tons of money and then ruining it for those that actually made their money and had it taken away. Because the master console fanbois know how to ruin a game just as easy.

Think you mean ‘arseholes’ not people who like consoles 😛 I agree though, there are plenty of people who hack, but have to also say that it is known to happen more on PC than on any other platform. Let’s just hope that it makes it to PC this year! More GTAV for everyone is a good thing!

That’s valid, but was released on every platform simultaneously. So the numbers on that would be more accurate than the current values that include GTA V, as well as the older games such as XCOM and Borderlands 2.

I still don’t understand why people buy the best stuff when they start playing a game. Isn’t the point of the game to actually play the game and earn it?
Maybe it’s just the old school gamers in us that think otherwise.

Also, this amount grinding that would need to be done in this game to earn decent stuff doesn’t really appeal to me.

No, but it’s not a small amount either when talking about the money that 20% represents. So if the percentages are pretty much the same in 2013 if you exclude GTAV, then it’s still significant and it would be a major decision for them to throw away that part of the market completely.

That’s half the reason I hate reading these things, because there’s so many ways of interpreting them.

Ah but remember a PC version would have canibalised sales and lost many other sales due to the ease of piracy on the PC platform. So not giving you the PC version protects their core income

            February 4, 2014 at 13:48

ARE YOU A COMPLETE IDIOT? If taht was the case no one would realese games on pc but everyone dies, developers even bother to bring old games to pc such as enslaved and brutal legend, pc must be making profit.

          • Verrayne

            February 5, 2014 at 12:08

If you sell 5 million copies and only 20% are on pc. that would mean you sold 1 Million copies on pc. Average sale price that you would get (because most people buy it on steam sales) is a guestimate of $20.

Remember if you have a dedicated team working on pc porting you would also need a dedicated team to do QA and the QA for pc is about 10 times larger than on console. Once a port is done those staff have got nothing to do. It’s much better out of a business perspective to just focus on the console market.

You could however get an outside company to do the porting for you, but that never works out well now does it?

          • Trygg Geoog

            February 5, 2014 at 00:41

20% is fine for 1 system. Remember that 80% of consoles is several systems.

So…we’re seriously comparing the GTA franchise, to Bioshock, Xcom and Civ 5? _Every_ iteration of Bioshock, put together, doesn’t equal the console sales of GTAV. Xcom on PS3/360, and Xcom Enemy Unknown on PC, 360 and PS3 sold a whopping 1.78 million units. And looking at the lifetime sales of Civilization, you can easily say that GTAV has outsold the combined franchises of Civilzation, Bioshock and Xcom.

Civilization – Doesn’t appeal to nearly as many
Xcom – May be a good game, but it’s lost in a shuffle of a saturated FPS market
Bioshock – Great series, though I personally think Fallout 3 just did it better (and it has mods, and it’s open world).

They wanted to wait until this year, 2014, to release it so they could raise their bottom line. Not to mention all the people that will buy it later when the price drops.

you’re obviously not that intelligent so let me explain:

they released max payne 3 on all three platforms simultaneously, and in that period it only managed 18% of revenue for them, they obviously decided 18% was not worth it so they’re not bothering with gta v, which will likely bring 18% again if not less, and it’s likely theyRe worried that PC piracy will eat up their console sales.

and before you start blabbering on about how there is piracy on consoles, yes, but no where near the same amount of piracy as on PCs, look at the piratebay for any pirated PC game vs. console game, the difference in numbers is huge and makes sense, most people don’t want to lose their consoles warranty and online to get some games for free.

Yeah, but that is kind of where it stops.

Taking into account that the console is literally the only thing that is customer facing people tend to glorify it.

Not even to mention the fact that a console is a PC pretty much… The moment you do anything online you are at the mercy of the PC hardware running everything.

This is an age old argument though. I just state facts. I don’t really argue. Console people (who call themselves this) just for some reason don’t see past the controller in their hands.

          Bioshock Infinite 360 – 1.62m
          Bioshock Infinite PS3 – 1.25m
          Bioshock Infinite PC – 0.43m

Of course, VGchartz quite often corrects their numbers, and clearly they don’t have access to all sales data. But, it gives a good idea. However, I think the comparison of these franchises to GTA is an abysmal failure, at best. It’s like comparing Killzone sales to CoD.

            February 5, 2014 at 20:36

It’s not really surprising to me, Bioshock lost allot of potential customers from the get-go, by being Microsoft exclusive. The franchise started on Microsoft’s console, so that’s where I’d expect the highest sales to be.

For example, the very first time I played any of the Bioshock games, was right after this Christmas’ steam sale, when I picked it up for dirt dirt dirt cheap. But, I still haven’t played through the whole thing because…well, it feels like a poor man’s Fallout 3. What I’ve played of it thus far is fun, don’t get me wrong, but it just smacks of Fallout 3 on rails, and I’ve got so many other games to keep my attention at the moment.

That’s really the crux of it though, whenever a new Bioshock comes out, I couldn’t care less, because as a PS3/PC owner, I wasn’t there in the beginning. Sort of like Uncharted on the PS3, really. For those who’ve played it since day 1, they know why it kicks ass, for those who’ve missed it for years and have just now picked up a PS3/PS4, it may not seem as great as it was hyped to be back in 2007 when the first one launched.

It happens, but yeah, I can see why the disparity is there.

            February 6, 2014 at 07:19

Didn’t say Bioshock Infinite, I said the first time I played any of the Bioshock games was on the steam christmas sale, an honest mistake since Infinite was on sale during that period also. But no, I picked up the first one.

And Bioshock shares quite a bit with Fallout 3,the music is very similar, the ‘old timey’ feel, regardless of the surroundings. Haven’t played 2 or Infinite so can’t comment on them.

          • Mossel

            February 6, 2014 at 07:46

Never new it was a timed exclusive. That makes sense then.

Ok I know I’m totally biased with Bioshock being my favourite game franchise, but dude you need to play it till the end! Seriously, it has an epic ending! All 3 of them. Infinite is my personal favourite, but that is probably only because it was the first one I played.

I get why you can say Bioshock is like a poor mans Fallout 3, but for me Bioshock is about the story and the creepy setting compared to fallout (only played about 1 hour of it) that had more to do with the big openworld, but I might be wrong there. Infinite is nothing like the first Bioshock, competely different setting. Utopia vs dystopia, that kind of thing. Give it a go! Play it right to the end and come back and tell me you were not impressed. Then, and only then, will I stop bugging you! xD

OK seriously, are you not at the least interested to find out why Rapture went to shit?! haha sorry I just cant let it go!

2 months into the year, with no big PC releases sofar, while the ps4 is released along with new and re-releases of games.
the 3% is really not unexpected, barely even worth worrying about.

the 18% from last year is a much more accurate representation and even though its a fraction of the console sales, 18% of a multi million dollar revenue is always worth a companies time.

Me too, it’ll still be more on each than PC, quantity & money-wise, but it gives a fairer picture. There’s so many variables that affect the final percentages that they’re interesting to read, but not something you could work off to make a decision.

Plus can you imagine if it turns out that, say for Xcom, one of the consoles actually sold less than PC? heh.

If they take out the console exclusives and then did a comparison it might show a different story all together. I know it’s only GTA V, but with 32 million sales it will be a huge hunk of change in those comparisons.

And I have to say again, THE ONLY reason why the percentages are so skewed towards consoles are because of GTAV. I mean. GTAV has now sold 32 milion. That is just a freak of an anomaly. It’s almost the entire NBA2k franchise. Take GTAV out of the equation and the percentages would be vastly different. Put GTAV on a PC and PC sales would also rocket

Yeah – I saw that, I’m more interested in the 2013 financial year results without GTA V. Then we could see whether there was a huge change from 2012 and what the “averaged” shift would be in terms of PC sales. That would, in my opinion, make a better benchmark than the one including GTA V. Dunno – might be wrong?

            February 4, 2014 at 14:11

What I can see, is that the last 3 months, the split was:

            Console – 97%
            PC – 3%
            Mobile – 0%

Whereas the last 9 months it was:

            Console – 93%
            PC – 7%
            Mobile – 0%

Huge shift since the release of GTA, but still a huge drop in PC sales…

Weird – I replied twice and for some reason neither comments came through…sheesh! Anyhow – what I wanted to say, is I saw those stats, but what I was looking for, was something more like the last 9 months of 2013, which includes a bigger chunk of “without GTA V”:
            Console – 93%
            PC – 7%
            Mobile – 0%
So I wonder what the entire 2013 would look like without GTA V…still dismally low for PC, but much better than just 3%…

Last time I checked – it was kinda a requirement for a master to have many servants. Last time I checked, some console gamers in 2013 went for 750+ and average PC gamers were going for R300-R350, it is almost 2.5 console revenue per PC rev.

      but yeah.

Controller on the couch is cool and all, but pc is my choice.

PC also has some games I would LOVE to play but never will e.g. WoW, Planetside 2 (although is coming), LoL/DoTA2, infinite number of indie games, etc.

But I like my gaming experience with a slice of convenience which is what I feel I get from consoles. The whole PC upgrade path, maintenance seems a bit over my head personally. Saying that, there are times when I want to throw the consoles with their damn patches, game updates, etc…

            To each their own though…

            February 4, 2014 at 14:45

Well the patches and updates are arguably worse on pc (but the end result is arguably better).

So if ease of use is your preference, then consoles are the clear winner. No worries about drivers or hardware conflicts or networking issues or other technical stuff. Just open the box, pop the disk, update, play.

You don’t need internet to play games on consoles. I’m sure the master race lost a lot of gamers since Steam started. And that is why you find more sales on consoles because the whole world is not connected to cheap internet.
Do you think a gamer living in the location with no internet is buying PC games.

This is pure business logic and that is why very few will never understand it.

Their cost to develop a console game is so much lower than a PC game and they sell it for double the price = MORE MONEH … very simple …

It still does not prove that consoles are better than PC. It just proves that it is easier to make money out of console gamers. Less work, lower quality and they pay twice as much …

GTA 4 was such a crappy port that no PC gamer wanted to buy a DAMN port. Why would I want to pay R400 for a shit port.
It actually sold pretty good in SA last year…funny enough. I wonder if they have improved the PC game…anyway.

The difference between the PC market and the console market is that PC users are more tech savvy, which makes them more demanding game play wise, it also makes them more discerning purchasing wise and better able to pirate. On the whole, if you did an average IQ test, you would probably find that PC’ers are smarter by a standard deviation. So console games are targeting a different market — comparatively retarded people with money.

No doubt this is a large market which is more lucrative on both counts, retardation and money.

Neither should anyone from PC’s be interested in or care for the mental porridge served to consolers.

Yes it is regrettable that making clever art doesn’t make money, but selling gladiators and survivor does. My suggestion for the jilted pc’ers? get off your …. and do something with your life rather than do the mental equivalent of watching tv….. that thing that mindless drones get their programming from at the end of the day.

In all fairness that’s a load of shit.

The problem with PC games is that they’re crap ports of otherwise half decent games, if the developers made a good job of doing the PC version instead of being lazy and doing half arsed port jobs, it would be a different story, I would like to see the figures of the call of duty franchise, i’ve bought every single COD since COD 2 and will continue to do so, as long as they keep up with the gameplay, Ghosts has fallen a bit shy this time round as the graphics processing needs are ridiculous, even with two 6870’s i’m unable to play on medium graphics, this is just not acceptable and the same goes for the crap they call the PC version on many different games.

If the game that is making the vast majority of the sales is only available on console, then of course PC will have a very low percentage. This is a ridiculous statistic, it’s not like people didn’t want to buy the GTA 5 for the PC, all this statistic shows is that they didn’t sell their best product to the PC market. If they had have done, I bet the stats would have been very similar to that of 2012. And the piracy concept is getting really old now, yes of course there is piracy on the PC, but there is on every platform…

Finally, PC gamers are different and if you compare Skyrim on console to the PC version (with the whole modding community) – we get a game that is an order of magnitude better than the crappy original game – see Skyrim Nexus.

Not everyone is the same but I would probably suggest that PCs are for those that like BIG games (think eve online or wow), modding and the best possible graphics (yeah PCs eat consoles for breakfast). Consoles are more for plug and play gamers who don’t want to mess around and just get into the game full on. That’s fine too – each to their own.

Hahaha. It’s funny to see all these discussions of hate on PC Gamers. It’s funny, it’s where the FPS/RPG/MMO Genre and GTA itself originated. I also have not had one friend that has played on PC and gone back to console (only for exclusives or financial issues, of which even then games are a lot cheaper on PC and a good PC is cheap now). I understand the market of consoles and I appreciate it. I only really have three issues with consoles. The way they are spread over such long release cycles to be more financially viable not only for customers but for its producers (ie the PS3/XB360 were loss leaders) which holds back game progression in a lot of ways such as AI, Scale, Graphics, Physics and ability to implement more grand ideas. Secondly is their controls (once you use a KB/Mouse you simply will not go back for First Person/RPG/Open World) and lack of versatility. I can do literally everything on a PC. Although if I didn’t dislike the console controls so much and there was official KB/Mouse support I would of picked up a “next gen” console, even just for the exclusives.

Two things, first Piracy isn’t (well it definitely shouldn’t) be a primary or even secondary concern. The fact of the matter is (and research proves it), is piracy doesn’t reduce sales as pirates are highly likely to simply not purchase the game if they cannot pirate it. It’s not a fact of lost sales, lost pride perhaps?

Secondly, the reason why they had such poor sales on PC is the absolute lack of titles they had on PC in current FY. The majority of the 80% of sales would of been GTA V….. which isn’t on PC. Haha. Poor journalism and community comments.

The only reason console gaming is more popular then PC gaming is that gamers can exchange games among their friends. You cannot exchange games among your friends with PC games. One copy on one machine that is it.Has nothing to do with a “master race” you can buy a quality gaming PC for less then $1000 that has specs that blows any console out of the water.

I am not sure what exactly those numbers are pointing to.if this is their sales numbers, I don’t doubt they are better on consoles. their biggest game was only for consoles. If it had been released for PC as well its sales would have been a higher percentage.

PC gaming is better, period. It is more costly which is the problem. A top end video card alone can cost more then the whole new system. But a good PC even a year ago already is more capable then the new console systems.

People still play GTA IV on PC and if Rockstar is truely for the gamers they wouldn’t miss out on showing what GTAV is truely capable of by putting it on PC. It really makes no sense why PC gaming isn’t more popular when it is definitely the better experience (guaranteed 1080p, voip, and antialiasing). Just sucks so many people steal the games so the market thats there doesn’t really get counted. If GTA can have a new bulletproof way to stop people from pirating the game, it will make a shit ton, still not close to console, but a shit ton.

Blah, blah, blah…the real reason why GTA V isn’t on PC yet is because Rock$tar always drag their feet around 6 to 8 months after the console release. That’s how you milk the console fanboys…with a beta release on inferior / outdated hardware. Why should things be any different this time? Having played the game on 360, it was an overrated disappointment…I’ll gladly wait as long as possible for a proper PC version which can be modded. Lastly, you can ignore the skewed numbers and phony “statistics”…let’s stick with history:

    GTA III
    PS2: October 2001. PC: May 2002
    GTA: Vice City
    PS2: October 2002. PC: May 2003
    GTA San Andreas
    PS2: October 2004. PC: June 2005
    GTA IV
    PS3/360: April 2008. PC: December 2008

As for the “but RDR didn’t come to PC” argument, it’s total nonsense which has NOTHING to do with the GTA franchise: A) A dispute over IP wouldn’t allow for a profitable PC release. B) With 2 game engines, the code was a complete mess (preventing a decent PC port). C) It was announced early in that game’s development that it would never come to PC…no such confirmation exists with regard to GTA V. D) Playing the “piracy” card is even more asinine…GTA V for both consoles were already on Pirate Bay nearly one week BEFORE the official release (and they aren’t fake torrents AND they’re still very well seeded). Some much for “piracy” being a determining factor…Rock$tar has already earned enough to give a damn.

Yeah, I read that story…more likely GTA V related since Rock$tar isn’t allowed to release RDR on PC even if they could get it to run properly (dispute over Intellectual Property and other legal matters). Besides, RDR’s code was a complete mess…too much was broken so it wouldn’t be worth their time.

            February 10, 2014 at 04:56

yes i was talking about the ports not the developers.

i cant blame leeds for 30 fps lock on la noire, they didnt make the game and it was mostly locked due to face capture on 30 fps. I know RDR code is a mess, but i had no idea they cant release it to pc. Why?

            February 12, 2014 at 00:37

I don’t know all the details as to why, but leaked internal memos suggested that Rock$tar was afraid of a lawsuit over some legal dispute concerning Intellectual Property…they claimed a release on PC “would not be viable” (in other words, *profitable* if they got sued). The code being a complete mess was merely a side issue…

i agree about RDR, played it too on a console, it was a 100% wild west game, the way the characters talked, the story, everything, it wasnt a “fun” game like say GUN was or call of juarez, it was too focused on being a wild west simulator with pretty borring missiosn, awful framerate and resolution and aim assit.

But who had problem with legal disputes? Thats what i dont get.

As I understood, people who previously worked for Rock$tar (and another unnamed studio who made some minor contributions to the game’s early development) threatened to sue. Apparently, the issue was Intellectual Property. Rock$tar and the other parties haven’t said anything specific as far as I know…on the other hand, nobody has denied anything either. Perhaps the matter was resolved by simply not releasing RDR on PC.

Man, Call of Juarez was a blast…I don’t care for Western themes but that was a great game. Totally agree with everything you’ve said about RDR. Indeed, with the right mods, we could’ve made something decent out of it.

its curious because la noire was on pc and that game was made by team bondai who had devs fired and people had to make a site that would show its TRUE credits including all those people who got fired and actually worked in the game. Yet leeds and rockstar port it to pc.

Yup, similar to 2K Games with Mafia 2…apparently, 2K let several of them go without giving any warning or credit. As I understood, Daniel Vavra left due to the internal BS…so it’s nothing new in the gaming world. It seems to be a relentless cutthroat business…

Yeah, they ported LA Noire and others but that was the intention all along…with RDR, I seem to recall statements very early on that it may never come to PC. Sure enough, it didn’t…well, not officially anyway. 😉

Plenty of “piracy” on consoles too…a fact which is always ignored because devs like to play the piracy card whenever a shoddy port sells poorly on PC for one reason or another. Interesting how sales figures like the ones mentioned in the article rarely (if ever) reflect digital sales (Steam, etc.)…and NEVER mention the lost revenue due to game trading among console gamers. THAT is actual piracy…not file sharing among PC gamers who would probably never make those purchases in the first place. Remove DRM from PC games and watch the earnings explode…this has always been the primary reason for “piracy” on PC. If we can afford a more expensive gaming platform, we can certainly afford their cheap games. Devs need to wake up to this fact…besides, all forms of DRM can be removed / bypassed / hacked. It’s completely useless and kills sales…especially when it comes to PC games.

“Where did you get that crap?”

It’s typical console fanboy nonsense…seriously, what did you expect?

“Pc master race is bigger than ever and it has reached 25 billion revenue,”

While this may be true, let’s not consider ourselves “master race”…this was an idiotic console fanboy invention based on petty jealousy over our vastly superior gaming platform. Let the peasants cry all they want…most of us who game on PC, game on other platforms too. Unlike these elitist hypocrites, most of us PC gamers do not limit ourselves to one platform exclusively.

“sorry to dissapoting moron but every developer ports their games to pc,”

But dude, there are console exclusives out there…even more on our end and the peasants know it. At any rate, not only do we have more PC exclusives, but we can play Linux games, console ports from every console generation and console “exclusives” through emulators. Don’t think consoles fanboys aren’t upset / jealous over this.

“gta v isnt on pc because rockstar north doesnt make the pc version, dumb moron.”

Rock$tar North may or may not do the actual port themselves but since every game is developed initially on PC, you can be sure that a PC version already exists at some stage of completion. “Oh, but games are optimized on consoles”…which means they are dumbed down in every way so that weak / inferior / antiquated hardware can handle them. Jaggies, 30 FPS (or less), 720, AA, etc.? A complete joke to any serious gamer…you’ll notice, PC exclusives don’t have to be dumbed down.

“in reallity pc revenue is higher than consoles.”

Overall, this is true…it’s because PCs aren’t limited in design and scope. You can spend as much or as little as you want, you can upgrade components, use any controller of choice, several monitors simultaneously (or TV) and do a great deal more than just game, stream content or enjoy a few other frills. PC revenue will always be higher than console revenue because there will always be more PCs / laptops out there. Mannion can ignore the facts all he wants…his slanted views won’t change anything. This “master race” which obsesses him so much knows better.

No doubt, I don’t understand the delay on PC myself. Maybe it’s because console gamers are more expensive so they make more money or maybe it’s because of piracy. I still find it strange that to this the Red Dead Redemption still hasn’t graced the PC. The modding would be up there with Skyrim for it.

Piracy is bullcrap all games come to pc lately even old games, if this game isnt on pc, then it has to do with technical issues with the devs.

The truth is whilst it is a console exclusive which it will have been for at least 6 months if not longer take 2 need to do nothing. this is such a stupid article, GTA has sold 32 million on console so of course their figures are going to be massively swayed towards console, 3% is still about a million sales which is pretty good considering nothing was released on PC, if GTA was released on PC at the same time as on last gen console, im sure the figures would be maybe about 30% PC, i think a lot of people would get on PC for the superior visuals, so you are taking maybe upto 10 million sales for PC.

They are simply trying to maximise their sales by only releasing on last gen just before the new consoles came out, then they will release on PC then next gen console sometime after.

Guess you did not research before you typed?
GTA 5 was pirated and released for the consoles before the actual release date. And also the HUGE hack for GTA Online from those with modded consoles running around giving out tons of money and then ruining it for those that actually made their money and had it taken away. Because the master console fanbois know how to ruin a game just as easy.

Wow, whomever wrote this, doesn’t have a clue. PC sales are dropping because of these companies own idiotic policies.. PC games get released 6 to 12 moths after the console releases, with heavy online DRM and they are usually terrible ports.. Why pay same amount or more for PC games while being treated like a thief (DRM), or rather treated badly in general… Most PC gamers also have consoles,

The fact is, it is easier to pirate console games, they only hack the console itself and all games will work for it without any sort of crack. In fact console versions of games get pirated/downloaded 63% more than PC versions. (there is a whole research about it, look it up) PC gamers always get blamed because while it is easy to push DRM for PC, it is impossible for consoles. (Up until now anyway, whole research was about PS3 and Xbox 360, perhaps they changed it in next gen)

If this was true and PC versions barely sold at all, GOG (Good Old Games, who only sells PC games WITHOUT DRM), Kickstarter (Mostly PC games) and other independent developers that only develop PC games WOULDN’T EXIST AT ALL… Where the PC gamers money go? Independent developers.. Why isn’t GTA V on PC, because they are short sighted idiots…

    Thats your answer right there…

No GTAV on PC means abysmal PC sales means no GTAV on PC. Yay circular logic!

18% isn’t bad considering some big titles weren’t released on PC at all, others were delayed (thus partially cannibalized by console sales) & that “consoles” doesn’t just mean “360 & PS3”.

But lets put all that aside, along with how huge GTA modding is & how GTA Online would kill piracy, and you still have 18% of the fastest selling game of all time just waiting to be bought. That kind of money isn’t to be scoffed at.

It’s amazing how little this actually matters; they just need to learn which games are good for PC gamers ‘before’ porting them. That and this retarded example that will no doubt be used when it comes out: The PC version of GTA V will sell less. Why? Because it came out almost a fucking year later (or more at this rate).

Fact of the matter is.. If you release something later one on platform it ‘will’ do worse. Period. Don’t get me wrong, I fully expect PC sales to be below console sales right now. Now let’s try it this way: PC sales vs ‘Individual’ console sales. It’s amazing how much things change when you aren’t comparing 3+ systems against 1 in sales. PC would still be lower right now, but regardless.. That number ‘is’ growing, despite what those numbers might say. It’s all about what’s released when.

Because of their attitude toward their customers about it, being ‘meh’ and giving vague answers to inquiries and acting like they don’t care either way if they put it out for PC (if it’s some kind of marketing strategy, it’s a pretty shitty one). I’d much rather give my money to game studios that actually care about their customers and love giving updates to what they’re working on even if it’s just little teases here and there, not this “There’s nothing for us to say” bullshit.. And the whole piracy argument is retarded, seeing as it’s just as easy to pirate console games as it is PC games, GTA 5 was being torrented either right before, or very shortly after it’s release…

GTA V made almost 2 billion dollars for Rock Star, and Rock star has about 10 Studios? Since R* Made 2 billion dollars, that’s more than enough for their company to for on for another 8-15 years. So why the fuck would PIRATING a GAME like GTA V make them lose money? AND the fact that they had a STEADY and GOOD multiplay why the fuck would anyone wanna pirate it? To be honest, WHEN GTA V released i was hyped about it for a PC release but after about what? 2-3 months? I don’t really care anymore, I’m just waiting for Watch Dogs and other games like Division to come out. R* probably lost a good amount of PC players, I can say if GTA 5 comes out for PC in the oncoming months, i won’t be much interested due to the fact that the hype of the game has been over for half a year already. It’s more of waiting for other games that actually care about their customers and supporters like Star Citizen. GOOD LUCK HAVE FUN

I’m goin to go for piratebay for this game FOR SURE, conscience clean.

Of course today PC margin is just 3%. GTA V, THE SALES WORLD RECORD is not on pc yet.
You see, this is what companies do: “Not releasing on pc because of piracy”.
Then more than a year later, they release it, full of bugs (GTA IV).
Don’t they think of how much this pisses the PC market? Don’t they think that they’re asking for piracy? That they’re actually stimulating it?

They also want people to buy the game twice. Some people will buy it for consoles because they want to play it right away and then play it again on PC for the incredible graphics and mods.

The reason it isn’t out on PC is because it is so easy to crack and install these games nowadays. It is a lot harder to mod your XBOX or PS4, so what they do is release it to console first most people will be forced to buy it instead of torrenting it. Being able to plug an XBOX controller into your PC and then running your PC to your TV is the main reason they don’t release games on PC till later.

My favorite part of this article is how it explains exactly what happened and yet the author and/or 2K presumably completely miss the point. “GTA V was by far our biggest selling game, selling 800 bajillion copies! It made most of our profit” “But for some reason, our relative profits on PC were down, where GTA V was not released! I wonder if these two things are related…”

    This article is 97% BS.

If wee look at Diablo III (initially a PC exclusive game) it sold 3.5 million copies in the first 24h and over 12 millions copies were sold in 2012. Take-Two/Rockstar know very well the PC community is still strong. I think the reason they are trying to drive the PC community away is because making quality PC games is much harder than developing console games where all the specs are clear cut and stable (or at least barely changes).

It’s funny when Take-Two/Rockstar say they are going where the people are and at the same time they are driving the PC community away. When GTA IV was released for PC they were “slightly” disappointed by the number of PC copies sold. Are you kidding me?!? They wait 6+ months
after the console release and Rockstar know a great deal of PC gamers also have consoles. They expect every PC/console gamers to buy their titles twice?… and 6+ months after? And then you have idiots blaming low PC titles sales on piracy.

The bottom line is that companies are in the business of making money. If the numbers supported making a PC version of GTA V or any other game, they would jump on it because it’s just more money they get to make. But if you’re right about it being much harder to make a quality PC game, and I believe you are, then can you really blame them for not wanting to produce a game on the PC? It’s not their fault it’s harder.

I’m not sure why GTA IV was delayed by six months, but I have a buddy who’s connected to Rockstar and they barely got V finished in time for their console release date of last September. As you play the game, you realize that it’s really only at about 70% of what they were going for (a lot of really cool ideas were only touched on and/or seem to be half completed). They had to cut out a lot of stuff just to make that date, which was actually six months later than they had originally planned. So they really had no time to also work on a PC version, even if they had wanted to.

Well, for one, every console game is developed on a high end PC first. It is then scaled down considerably to run on inferior consoles (PS4/Xbox One included).

Ah, okay, I see. Well, that makes sense … but then again, home PCs would also be inferior to the systems being used. However, it really becomes a moot point because it all comes down to sales.

One important fact to consider is that if those inferior consoles didn’t exist, very few games would probably come out on PC because without the 160 million PS3 and XBOX systems out there (and other consoles), many developers wouldn’t be able to justify spending so much money on making a game. The only reason why releasing a game like GTA V on the PC would be feasible is because of console sales. Yes, you’d get a game here and there that would make sense to create, but it would be much riskier and most companies would probably be unable to survive on PC game sales alone. There’s no way to prove this, of course. But it seems to make sense.

So, when it comes to the physical creation of console games, I must say “thank you” to PC gamers … but when it comes to the initial business sense of creating that game in the first place, I get to say “You are welcome” to those same PC gamers.

            I see your point.

One thing I can say about us PC gamers, is that some are too picky. Think about this. There are so many ways that PC devs could create and invoke copy protection tools; such tools that embody the very highest level of DRM, unable to be decrypted by any hacker’s attempts. However, when something like that happens, especially if it has to reside on the system itself, some of my gaming brethren start to cry “backdoor”, “worm”, “trojan”, etc. Others go as far as to say, “It freezes my system.” (e.g. StarForce). So, instead, devs stick with protection measures that are trivial and very easily overcome by most hacking groups.

I long for PC game developers to adopt something new and just say take it or leave it. If they would all just stick together and to their guns, PC gamers would have no choice but to conform. Buying games would become the norm, and sales would be phenomenal. Also. the level of gaming technology/enhancements would go through the roof as companies would develop high quality PC titles without fearing a bad ROI.

Very interesting. I don’t know enough about the PC gaming world to comment much, but that does seem to make sense. In a perfect world, every game would come out for every system. Regardless of how a gamer prefers to play a game, they should be able to do so. What irritates me is so many PC gamers are quick to remind console gamers that their systems are superior. We already know this and obviously we either a) don’t care, b) prefer to just fire up a console, play, and shut it down, c) enjoy playing games that can only be found on consoles, or d) a mix of all those. Personally, I grew up on console games, but one reason that I’ve always avoided PC gaming is that I’m a writer and if I had a bunch of awesome games on my system, I’d never get anything done. Then the world wouldn’t be enjoying my zombie book (Patient Zero, with the black and white cover 😉 ). I’d seriously write a few sentences and then switch over Diablo III or something for an hour and a half. lol

GTA V sales are an exception not a rule. Using those sales to make an argument that they would sell better on consoles that PC’s does not make ant sense. A good example would be to look at the sales of Diablo 3 for example. In its first week on PC it had sold 6 million copies, this was however not repeated when the supposedly superior console version was released.

          • Zeroed Out

            May 25, 2014 at 07:04

Possibly. But some games like Diablo seem — in my experience — to mostly be known by PC gamers, so I’d think lower sales figures on consoles would make sense. I remember many years ago when King’s Quest was all the rage for people who played on PC, but most people who grew up playing the NES seem to have no idea what that game even is.

I don’t have the time nor the inclination to search a bunch of sales figures on console games vs PC games to come to a clear conclusion, but since Rockstar is able to dedicate such research on an ongoing basis, surely their conclusions would at least be able to determine whether or not releasing a certain game would be worth the effort of porting it over. But you may be right as well. Who knows.

There may be other factors involved with GTA V, as well. Given the fact that Rockstar is trying to sell in-game cash with this game, they may be reluctant to port over GTA V because it will surely be modded up the wazoo, effectively cutting out the ability to sell in-game cash to PC gamers while still being expected to release the same DLC that console gamers are receiving. They’d either be providing free content with no chance of making money off the in-game cash or they’d need to stop modding completely, which would do nothing but upset PC gamers.

The console preference is in my opinion incentive related. Sony or Microsoft helps to fund part of the development and therefore Rockstar prioritizes consoles. The same cant happen for the PC, since PC’s are standalone units not created by corporations.

No more buggy/glitchy than GTA V is on consoles.

And if a PC title is too powerful for the system it’s running on, at least a hardware upgrade is an option. Frame-rate drops, lag, freezing, overheating, etc on consoles are things you just have to deal with.

When you directly compare PC vs Consoles, it’s no question which gaming experience is better. PC’s dominate in every aspect which, in turn, still makes us the Master Race. GTA V not releasing on the PC thus far doesn’t change that. With so many amazing games readily available or upcoming, most PC gamers have long since moved on to bigger and better titles. RockStar isn’t the be-all and end-all of gaming. If fact, they’re not even close. Valve, Ubisoft, and 2K shits on RockStar, just to name a few. There are many others.

While gameplay (the true selling point for any title) is far more important than visuals, with today’s technology, there’s no excuse to not have great graphics to complement it.

And all gamers give a f**k about graphics, especially “true gamers”. Only a blatant liar would say otherwise. Devs who know how to incorporate both are the ones who deserve best in show.

As far as the PS1 games are concerned, I’m fully aware that there are many which have much better stories and superior gameplay than a lot of the watered down stuff being developed today. But that’s the thing. Lots of games that are so much fun from back then are also giving you the best they have to offer graphically. If they were amazing with ’90’s tech, imagine keeping the same great gameplay intact, but giving them a graphics overhaul with today’s engines. They would be much more immersive. And again, gameplay would not be modified at all.

I can’t fathom how GTA V would be equally as fun with GTA 2’s graphics from the PS1. Sure, gameplay would still be good, but it would also be an eyesore for no apparent reason.

The truth of the matter is that game developers are going to aim for the market that has the most to gain and right now its the console market, shame as it may be that these games companies (most of them anyway) made all there money by selling PC games when consoles where way to shoddy to play decent games, but you cant blame them for this its a business at the end of the day and there all out to make the most they can. more games sell on consoles becouse more people have them (or at least ones that are capable of playing the latest games) im about to make a statment that will probably anoy alot of peole but its my honnest opinion of the matter so here goes. more people have consoles becouse they are frightend of pc’s they think they will break them and wouldent have a clue when it came to trouble shooting a problem, you hear them say (i dont wont the hassle it just works on a console without the messing about) yes that’s true to a extent but what there really saying is i will stick with the inferior technology because I’m to stupid to sort out any trouble that may accrue.
i have a high end gaming rig (like realy high end) and can honestly say that it does piss all over a xb1 or a ps4 iv seen it with my own eyes im not one that looks at comparison videos on you tube for my evidence my eyes don’t lie to me. i own 4 xb360 consoles which i use in the living room and the bedrooms as media servers as this seems the cheapest and best way to do it, i use a 360 controller for the PC (on some games) on my 52″ Samsung TV in the living room and can say that it wipes the floor with a friends xb1 and ps4. All we can do as PC lovers is hope for the best and mabe the next gen of dx or mantle will make it easyer for the games developers to release PC titles at the same time as there console releases and hope it will make them a profit and make it worth there while.
