Why are Sony not advertising?

55 second read

Yes I know this sounds odd coming from me since I have always complained about Sony’s advertising but it has started to become obvious that Sony are just not interested in really advertising their software.

Last week in the US Resistance 2 and Gears 2 were both released and while Gears had TV spots, midnight launches and completely over the top Internet and radio advertising what did Resistance 2 have?

About the same as LittleBigPlanet had, virtually nothing.

The results are quite obvious to see as well seeing that Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm Pacific Rim were all released last week and the sales have been mediocre to say the least.

Sony is still aiming squarely at the hardcore market but unlike in the previous generation there are now real contenders for the casual market and Sony just appear to be floundering at the moment.

They need a price cut and a whole lot of marketing if they want the PS3 to win this war.

Sony and Nintendo don’t care about the hard-core market, as was seen locally at rAge 2008 where they apparently didn’t want to have a stand of their own as the “event caters for the hard-core gamer only”. Thats what I heard from a very reliable source.

The most adverts I have seen are for the Wii. I have seen a couple of adverts for Motorstorm. Strangely enough I have yet to see a 360 advert? When I was in the UK I saw two 360 advert with people sitting in the back of someone’s head lol. But then I also saw more PS3 advert’s in the UK than 360 and Wii. I think this article is pointing at the US. The US is not the whole world btw 😉

The article is aimed at the world not the US.

Unfortunately the game advertising in SA has always been a bit weak.

What happened to my comment I made earlier???
Im living in America now and to be honest the only ads for games that you see are for PS3. Mostly LBP and seen R2 a few times. Only other gaming ad Iv seen is for Left for Dead 4 (Think thats what its called – Zombie game)
So I dont know where you got your facts but they aint so true!

No idea where you other comment went? I checked the spam folder and it was not there.

As for the advertising it’s nice to hear about a first hand point of view, I can only report on what I read and that may not always be true.

Can you confirm though that there were no LBP or Resistance 2 launch parties and that Gears 2 had a bigger marketing campaign?

Don’t think there was any launch parties. That and they’ve had the strangest release schedule for their AAA games. LBP was plagued with a delay. And I don’t think it was meant to be a world wide launch anyway. Same with R2. Scattered over the world in a period of a month. Consider this though. To make a world wide release a success with mid night launches and all you really need a strong marketing campaign. Which cost a shit load of money. Sony Corp is a company that sells luxury durables. Stuff people can go without in desperate times. MS is a company selling software that the world can’t function without. Seeing that GM reported a sales drop of what 35% in the last month alone, I think Sony is very much feeling the pinch of the financial crisis.

I dont think 1000’s of Sony fanboys can be wong in this matter. They all moan saying that they never see ads for they’re precious exclusives.

I see the sales figures backs it up. What i read about LBP i was expeting a increase of sales of atleast 33% in both hardware and software. Just goes to show the internet can only do so much…..
