You may get that Final Fantasy VII remake after all

3 min read

Final Fantasy is one of the most beloved videogames of all time. People have been begging for the PlayStation 1 classic to be remade each successive console generation, and now, in this generation of remasters and remakes, anticipation that Square Enix – who, like Bethesda, are hosting their own conference this year – might actually remake the game. New rumours suggest that that’s what’ll happen.

According to Siliconera, who’re not usually one to jump the gun on rumours, Final Fantasy VII is being remade. Completely remade; with Cloud sporting a more modern, Advent Children-styled aesthetic to celebrate Final Fantasy VII’s 20th anniversary. It could even be a PlayStation 4 exclusive.

If this does happen, expect the internet, and the millions of people who’re so enamoured with one of the most overrated Final Fantasy games of all time to very nearly explode.

If you’ll recall, Square recently trolled fans with news of a port of the game for PS4, claiming that remaking the game from scratch would be far, far too much work.

Final Fantasy series producer Yoshinori Kitase, speaking about a potential remake in February, said it would take a lot for it to happen.

“I can honestly tell you I would love to do that,” he replied. “If you simply ask me if I personally would like to do that, yes I would. Definitely. There’s no lie about it. But you must believe me when I say it would take a lot to happen. Even if I casually say I would like to do that, because it would be a huge project I would have to motivate myself to the level that I really am prepared to take on this huge responsibility,” he said.

“I don’t know if those three things will happen simultaneously. It has to tick lots of very big boxes. I won’t rule out the possibility, but it would take a lot to make it happen. But should I ever take it on, it would have to be the biggest project I’ve done. My life work. So I would have to be as highly motivated as that to end up with something I’m very happy with. It’s a huge thing for me.”

This is a bold, bold claim by Siliconera, and one that I hope is real. Mostly so that fans of the game can shut the hell up and move on to new things. Still, it would be great smack that pretty boy Sepiroth around in super mega ultra HD for once. What do you think? Will it ever happen?

You’ll be able to watch Square Enix’s press conference right here on at 7pm tomorrow night. (local time!) to see if it’s real.

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
