No more local PS4 stock constraints

The PlayStation 4 has done pretty well just about everywhere, selling out at most retailers. Even locally, stock of the machine has been hard to come by. But no more. Ster Kinekor has sent out a press release saying that as of this week, stock of the console will now be as regular as Darryn since he started eating more bran.

“It’s been a challenging few months liaising with our global teams to ensure that the South African PlayStation 4 console demands have been met to satisfactory levels. As expected the team has been working hard with our international colleagues to ensure that the inflow of units will be regulated and remain consist for the foreseeable future,” says Mario Dos Santos, Chief Executive Office of Ster Kinekor Entertainment in a press release I’ve copied and pasted right here. “Retailer support is imperative to the success of these units. We are thrilled to announce that PlayStation 4 accessories will now also be available through retailers from this week.”

Unfortunately, yes – because our currency has taken a firm beating – everything has gone up in price. Here’s what you’ll be paying for a PS4 and its accessories.

  • PS4 Standalone: R 6 799.99
  • DS4 Black: R 999.99
  • DS4 Charging Station: R 399.99
  • PS4 Camera: R 999.99
  • PS4 Stand: R399.99

That’s a lot beans for some shiny next-gen gaming. If you have that sort of cash, and want to get in on the new gen, you shouldn’t have much trouble going forward.

Dammit I can’t lie… for someone who just upgraded his graphics card & just bought a PS4… it’s really tough to not suggest to someone that they put together a gaming PC instead. With Steams new direction and the great Xbox controller support, my PC has almost become like just another console in my living room. The game prices are the real win. Tough call hey… Buy a new PC game for R449 or a new PS4 game for like R900!

I think for the next 3 years, PC will be the way to go. Thereafter the PS4 will have amassed awesome exclusives and be worth it. I bought my PS3 only in 2009 and by then, there were loads of cool games to choose from and they for sold for cheap cheap!

I’ll be upgrading my PC this year (as soon as the new tech drops, so that I can get the old tech cheap :D) and only go after a new console in a few years time.

Pretty much my logic when it comes down to it
I think you forgot backwards compatibility in your argument , for me being a ps 1 ps2 and ps3 gamers to now a full on master race gamer… The absolute last straw for me was the ps3 to ps4 incompatibility , they fucked me on ps2 to ps3 and then they fucked me again on ps3 to ps4 ( would still be a Ps gamer if I could of played Gta V on ps4 )

But looking back now I laugh at u fan boys , ( I laugh at myself as well , it’s joke not a dick don’t take it so hard )

I can go pick up AC 1 through to revelations , 4 games for 200 bucks , that will work on my system for years to come , I see steam giving devs the power to price themselves , the whole consuloe thing is Gana die. 900 for a game and Bt screws u in the ass , they will give u 200 trade in value on a game bought less than a week ago , my pc can surf the net watch videos , edit videos , play all games on 60 fps with out a hitch ( hell sometimes I get 80 fps ) no no , this argument for consoles is lost , u get ass raped for Ps branded gadgets , that guess what , won’t work with the ps 5 , this whole collection of ps4 games u building up , guess what u won’t be able to play them on your ps 5

      What a load of nonsense

I only respect consule developers for pushing boundaries , but my biggest fuck u is to sony , thanks , the 30 + ps3 games I had became null and void the day my ps3 broke and here I was thinking I could just slot it into the ps4 and carry on gaming , I mean for real

( happy hump day , and if u wana fuck some 1 make sure it’s Zuma , cause his fucking us all )

Now without making the servers collapse please enlighten me. I don’t have a gaming rig and need to build one from scratch. What will a ballpark figure be for a rig that will last say 8 years without having to upgrade?

Holy crazy motherboard, if that’s the price to go gaming on PC, I’ll stay on console tyvm. I bet you’ll need to upgrade in a year or two as well.

Edit: I suddenly remember why I don’t game on PC anymore.

Evetech build high-end gaming rigs, these will last you a while.

Let me just put it out there, I bought a machine for R11k 2 years ago. It’s still going strong, and in a year I’ll upgrade my graphics card for R3.5k (approx.) and it’ll go another 3 years. At full graphics. Then another 2 years of slowly lowering the graphics options, unless I upgrade my card again. Sounds expensive, right?

I’ve paid a total of about R500 – R600 in the last year for games, and bought around 20 of them. That’s one console game, second hand or a few months old. 20 console games now will cost you in the region of R10k if you buy smart. If you buy new, that’s R18k. Just for the games. That’s where the price difference matters. What good is a slightly cheaper console if you can’t buy more than 1 game every 2 months for it? When you can buy a pc game every 2 weeks, for less. Waiting on the steam sales is a great choice.

Like I said, I’m not being an ass about it. I left PC gaming when Pentium 4 was still the shizzle, so yeah I’m a bit way out of the loop. I remember it irritated the hell out of me to have to mess around with the settings just to be able to play a game. I’m sure it involved a lot from then but I don’t think I have the patients for this anymore.

As per the games, I only buy when I’m able to play, which means that I usually only pay around R200 for a game which is about R4k for 20 games. At least I know I’m still good for a couple of years on the PS3.

            March 12, 2014 at 11:15

lol I’m just saying though from my perspective. It just is cheaper in the long run to play PC games.

Nowadays there’s a lot less tweaking needed to play games, unless you run Windows 8. Hint: don’t do it. I’ve not had to touch my pc since I bought it, and I’ve run everything without hassle. Automatic windows and driver updates, and that’s it.

What I really like about these guys is the range they have. From budget to how much fucking money do you have? O_O

And they’re all for gaming. 🙂 Their graphics card prices are incredibly competitive too.

If the PS4 was R4999 and the games were down to the usual the R600 mark, the tables will then be turned on the PC market.

I have 3 consoles from the 3 manufacturers but that’s only because I have picked them all out on sale at ridiculous prices.

I’m also considering moving the master race. But it’s not a no brainer for me.
I priced an midrange upgrade. I have an old CPU and mobo (PCIe 2.0!!), so it’s pretty much a full upgrade. Gonna set me back around 11K. So almost double the PS4.

Yes, the games are more expensive, but a new title on Steam is still $60. So not THAT much cheaper than console. In the long run, PC will definitely make sense, but that’s only if you play lots of games. If you don’t , it’s kinda the same imo. (Plus PSN+ should get their retail titles soon, so that should keep me going).

Still haven’t decided, but to me it’s a 50/50 thing.

So let’s say you buy a PS4, get an extra DS4 and two games.
          That’s about R9,600
You can build quite a decent rig with that. And taking into consideration that your games will be much cheaper, it’ll afford you the opportunity to upgrade in three years again, and be good for another three years.

while lying on the coach and watching the game on a big screen. Also consoles
are a lot more fun with friends, think sing star for the PS3 or FIFA or any
sport game for that manner playing in the living room. Took the thing on
holiday just plug and play no problem no issue.

Yes consoles are expensive and so are the
game but they just work, also not more expensive than PC’s where you do
upgrades every year or every second year.

Was so frustrated with PC games, you’re
never able to play at full specs without at least buying the 6000 graphics card
every second year, then there is windows direct X, driver’s constant
issues. Some people love the frustration
it seems. Remember the console will last 4 – 5 years with games getting better.
With PC the game you play now is the best you will get next year you need more
    hardware for the same enjoyment.

I was never able to enjoy Ubisoft games
before due to glitches that nly some people would experience relating to some
hardware combinations, with the Ps4 everyone is on the same hardware easier to
    manage easier to fix

Been in the industry playing games since
    the pre 90’s

Ok, since you are “in IT” I fail to see why you have to “upgrade every second year”

I disagree entirely with almost everything you say here.

“more hardware for the same enjoyment”????

If you want to play the newest games on full specs you pretty much have to upgrade your GPU every two or three years. Except if you buy a Titan now, but that wouldn’t be smart 🙂

How many times does Nividia Upgrade there Hardware, How many times does windows change there operating system. You might still be able to run the game but not at full specs as intended. Or you think you do with Lag or turning off lighting effects
By the way I do own both, but stop playing computer games since I bought the console. My Pc rig that lasted a long time was R20000, my Laptop more capable than most PC’s is R25000.

Buy AMD, save yourself the headache.

If you bought a R20k PC today, it wil last quite some time, providing you apply wisdom with upgrade, heck, even a R10k upgrade will be even more than sufficient.

But the console cost R6700 and last 5 years, mmmmmmm. So I can by a R20000 PC run most games for 3-5 years although not at full spec or pay R6700 and be able to use the thing for 5 years.
Regarding AMD been there done that never again had lost of compatibility issues

Then you have been unfortunate. I’ve only been running AMD. A 20k PC WILL last you more than 5 years, if you upgrade wisely.

I can easily “spend R20k” on an “upgrade” and waste my money.

For example, my CPU is now 5 years old, but I can run all current games well. Upgraded to SSD in December and the year before that bought proper GPU for a bargain.

And you pay substantially more for console games

I do both as time allows. The normal argument goes PC has better hardware, It has Steam, games are cheaper, it has mods, some people use it in their living room with a controller so it’s like a console, Netflix, Star Citizen, Master Race, Etc. Which is true. Some people prefer tweaking and playing with hardware settings.

I still prefer console gaming because it’s simple. Buy a console and you’re set for years hardware wise. Plus zero worries about Windows crashing, virusses or having 10 apps running in the background chewing memory or if the new game will work on you’re PC or of you have to play on low settings.

I think your sentiments are certainly valid to a degree but disagree with regards to several points. Like yourself I have been a gamer since the 80’s, my first console being an Atari 2600. I am lucky enough to enjoy multiple platforms currently and can only speak from personal experience.

Consoles are more expensive as a hobby, period. Modern PC’s are on a much slower upgrade cycle than they were 10 years ago thanks primarily to consoles and the current 7/8yr lifespan seen from the X360 and the PS3. A semi-decent PC will generally last from 3 to 4 years now.

New graphics cards are generally between 5 and 10% better than their predecessors making the MUST HAVE syndrome unnecessary unlike years ago. The biggest point of difference is the cost of the games though. I have a huge PC, X360 and PS3 library (packed away the PS1, PS2 and my Megadrive) and my PC library cost a lot less than the others and is far larger.

A new MB, Processor, RAM and Video Card (upgrade speaking) will give you full spec PC gaming, cost you less than any “next-gen” console and will run with FAR superior load times, resolution and overall visual fidelity.

“Big screen” is a moot point as I use a 32″ as my primary screen and a couple 24’s as multi setup (not for gaming) and sit much closer to the screens.

Agreed on the social aspect of lounge gaming, many a night with some whiskey, SF4 or UFC and a couple mates tossing controllers at each other.

Ubisoft are just dickheads, accept it.

      Have a great day!

A suggestion : The wife and I bought, for R3999, a 32 inch full HD JVC “smart” TV. Has Wifi, can surf BUT can link to home media server and USB and whatever. Play games from that, much cheaper than a bigger screen TV, which I think you only really need in a big room or to actually watch TV on it.

Our TV room has a bigger screen TV in it, for primary TV viewing and stuff, but we sit further away from it. The smaller TV would not be as nice in the TV room.

Just a thought, do not know if you want for games mostly or primary TV and games

yeah, they do. We had some issues getting video format to play, but PS3 media server was then installed and this means all the content we want can be played (well most).

It is essentially a 32″ non touch screen tablet. I just leave all the extra alone: some of it is not well thought out, like the weather app has not cities in SA, for example.

Pretty cool. Also SA JVC is not the same as Europe JVC, it is imported under a different licence. BUT the price is why I bought it. It works, does all I need it to do and was R3000 less than the Samsung with the same functions (also Android)

Now that looks like it can already outperform a PS4, add to that the cheaper games and you have made it equal in no time. PS Plus is awesome though, but Steam sales give better personal options… tough.

I can get the same board, CPU, amount of ram (not Corsair), up the hdd to 1.5TB, and change gfx to the MSI AMD R7 260X OC 2GB… with nothing else (cos I don’t need it), which almost matches Ubertang’s specs from the other day, and get it for about R6k 😛

Please note that the PC Ubertang was talking about WAS a full machine.

I’d go up to R6.8k just because I need a new PC case. Will let you know what Evetech finally quote me on for a full PC with similar specs.

I just visited Evetech and I think the problem is that even though they have an excellent selection mostly IT people would now what to buy. Plus when I click on customize and buy for a 7K rig all the extras will quickly increase the 7K to 12k if I had to customize it a bit and included Windows. But obviously the nice thing about PCs is it’s very easy to upgrade later.

Until Steam gives me free games every month, i’ll keep my PS4 as my mine gaming option. But thanks for derailing this thread with PC crap.

Steam doesn’t give you free games just like the PS doesn’t give you free games. You pay for PS+ and wait to see what you gonna get, Steam sales are very similar in that you wait for the sales and cherry pick what you want. I spent about the same amount on a Steam Sale recently as I spent on PS+ for 12 months and both are equally valid ways to get some great content for a good price.

Also, since the comments thread is separate from the actual article (and what i said was indeed a VERY valid point) I can’t derail an entire thread that started with my own comment, that everyone then felt was worth discussing.

So until you have something half decent to contribute, you know where N4G is.

good to hear!! glad I bought my ps4 on launch day with all the goodies. but interesting enough: i remembered when our currency took a major dip PS2’s were nowhere to be found and prices ranged from 3k to 6K for the consoles and PS2 games were R800 at one point. LCd 42 inch tvs when they first came out where R30-40K. so things will settle down in the future once everything stabilizes and we can all be happy gamers whether it is PC or Xbox or PS
