Star Citizen

Star Citizen, the upcoming PC space game that is just too damn good for your filthy console, is a go as of now. With help from crowd-sourcing initiatives, Chris “Wing Commander” Roberts can bring his dream for a next generation of space exploration and combat back with style, and thanks to you, he’s broken some records in the process.

Star Citizen managed to raise a total of over $6.2 million during it’s run. With 90 185 backers contributing an average donation of $69 each, Star Citizen easily surpassed the $2 million goal that it had started with.

“Our gratitude is immeasurable; we owe you our livelihoods and will not soon forget it,” the developer said in an update to the Kickstarter page.

There’s still room for more cash though! Roberts will still accept donations as Star Citizen hits a sub-space slipstream into development, although new backers won’t be able to earn any of the rewards that were offered earlier.

The Roberts Space Industries site will now also shift forms towards becoming a more community-focused hub, updating backers along the way. With a couple of million in the bank to begin work, Star Citizen will also receive funding from investors, while delivering a multiplayer military title to go alongside it, in the form of Squadron 42.

All in all, it’s a new Kickstarter record for Roberts and his crew, and to celebrate their achievements, they’ve released a new video that showcases some of the shiny new Cryengine visuals that the game will utilise.

Words cannot explain how excited I am for this game. With a solid vision in place, and the return of a much under-utilised genre, I might just be looking to buy myself a Pee-Cee to play the game on when it eventually arrives in 2014.
