Xbox One hitting South Africa in October?

A fresh batch of Xbox One rumours have surfaced, and there’s some interesting news in there for local readers still waiting for news on a South African release of the console. According to The Verge, the console could be hitting the country in October.

In a report, The Verge says that there’s a white Xbox One on the horizon, but they also say that the console is headed for other territories soon.

“Microsoft is said to be releasing Xbox One in April in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Russia, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina,” the tech site says, following up with another batch of countries, including our own.

“An October launch of Xbox One is also rumored to follow in China, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Greece, Portugal, Slovakia, Turkey, Saudia Arabia, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, Israel, India, Indonesia, and Egypt.”

We’ve been pestering Xbox South Africa for information of a local release date every single day to no avail, and we’ll keep prying until we get official confirmation of the news. It’s honestly quite a likely date – so it gives you plenty of time to save all those peanuts.

The rumour says that the white, employee-only Xbox One is set to be released to the public, along with a possible disc-less version of the console and a 1TB version at some point in the future. The information comes from a verified insider that lurks neoGAF, who’s also spilled a ton of pertinent, interesting information on the Xbox One and its near future.

What say you, South African Xbox fans? Is October a fine time, or is it just too late?

A little late to the party. By that time most people would have rage quit waiting and purchased a PS4. Or am I underestimating XBox1 console fans here?

Brand loyalty is quite a powerful thing. I don;t really understand it at all, but it exists, and it’s strong.

When the PS3 was delayed back in the day people waited for it to be released so yeah brand loyalty still lurks the halls.

Ps3 released in november 2006, released here in March 2007. Interestingly, the Xbox 360 was released in the us in November 2005, and launched here in September 2006.

Mmmmm. Very interesting. Yet Xbox is pretty big in SA. Will be very interesting to see how ths plays out then after a couple of years

The 360 (hardware) still sells bucketloads here – but software attach rates are genuinely pathetic. I believe it’s down to how easily the 360 can be haxed to play pirated games.

Rand is going only in one way, personally, I think people should get it from EU asap. The XBOX is going to be a lot more expensive when it hit SA.

            January 30, 2014 at 07:52

Understandable, but usually a comes down in price after a while. So X1 users will be paying the same price for say AC 4 as what PS4 users payed a year ago? … jeez, that sucks

Exclusive titles usually. Though MS shoots it self in it’s foot by releasing it on PC as well. Like Titanfall. Can’t be the free games they give away every month. Also I wonder what the price will be. If rumours are to be believed it will be a little less than ones first born soul.

True, loyalty is a powerful thing but it is also a thing that can pisses off your loyal supporter because the loyal person feels betrayed when MS do something like this. I still think it is an insult from MS to take so long to release it in the country.

It can be a powerful thing but also it can bite you on the ass …

The recent performance rumours of Tomb Raider on the two consoles has put a heap of hesitation on my plate. I may eventually wait for the price drop in a year. Although with the rate of our plummeting Rand, that could still mean R9000.

I think that anyone who is not brand loyal to a fault will get a PS4 because its available and is at present delivering better performance. However, as most new IPs for the new gen is only coming out end 2014 beginning 2015 it might only be worth the getting the new gen at the end of the year anyway.

I love my Xbox 360. Really. If I have a choice between buying a game on Xbox or PS3 (I own both consoles now) I still go for the Xbox version.
    But…
Almost a year after the release of the PS4, Microsoft is going to drop a less powerful console at a more expensive price. I just do not see myself picking up an Xbox One to be honest.
And for those of you who can recall: Remember when Sega’s Saturn and the PS1 where the contenders in the console war? Sony wiped the floor with Sega, simply for having the more powerful of the machines. Has Microsoft forgotten about this, or did they simply think that brand loyalty will prevail and still make them money? Sorry. But this consumer is going to go for the option where my wallet will not be violated in some way…

You are forgetting one factor … initially the PS4 would have only had 4GB of RAM, which meant that initially the Xbox One was the more powerful console. The fact that it’s got 8GB of RAM was kept secret until the PS4’s unveiling. In other words, until the unveiling of PS4, Xbox One was developed to be the more powerful console … in reality, PS4 turned out more powerful, but this is down to the informational strategy of Sony.

True … I’m not saying one should buy something because it could have been more powerful … I’m saying that your statement that Microsoft chose to develop a less powerful console because they assumed brand loyalty would sell it is somewhat unfounded.

Both console makers spent quite a long time designing and developing their consoles. They based the specs for their consoles largely on what specs they anticipated the other console maker would use … because they always try to have the better product. Microsoft based its design on the fact that it expected the PS4 to have 4GB of RAM, so they designed Xbox One to be more powerful than that … in the end, they had cake on their face when Sony unveiled PS4 with 8GB of RAM.

Look, even if I did say that the Xbone was farted out by Popeye after eating broccoli instead of spinach, the fact remains: The Xbox One is the weaker of the console.
The timing of release to other regions where the more powerful PS4 would have been available for almost a year, is stupid.
The price at which they are releasing their more expensive, weaker console is also, stupid…

Glad to hear there’s a launch date for those who want an XB1.

The discless hardware is pure idiocy. No way I’d buy into a piece of hardware that had no option for content you purchase physically, sets a terrible precedent. And as we all know, show one company that it can be profitable, and they all fucking copy it. Fuck that, I like my disc based games.

Personally, I quite disappointed with both the Xbox One and the Playstation 4 … and I’m quite sure that neither of them offers enough of a compelling reason to move to “next-gen”. True, they have arguably “better” graphics, but their graphics seems as a marginal improvement over “last-gen”. Their ecosystems offer no real incentives … and in my opinion, the best games at the moment are on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. Maybe Xbox One and Playstation 4 will do enough by October this year to convince me to get one of them … but for now, I really don’t want either of them … they both seem like a slap in the face.

I read somewhere (on this site) that development takes about 3 years for a new game so we will only really see proper “next-gen” titles end 2014 beginning 2015 (also read somewhere else on this site). So at the moment you have rushed jobs and ports and I am not saying that they are not good its just that they are not the best that is going to be on offer.

So maybe we will see proper “next-gen” titles in 2 or 3 years … but the problem is that by then, it will be more like “last-gen” because not only has Xbox One and PS4 started off behind PC, but over the next 2 or 3 years, PC will continue to be progressing and getting even better. The gap between PC and “next-gen” is just going to increase more and more over the next 8 or 10 years.

The fact that consoles lagged behind PCs the previous gen (power wise) for at least 6 or 7 years made no difference at all to console gamers. The only ones suffering, as per the previous gen, is PC gamers.

Well that is the debate, well for the last gen what was the difference, on PC you could play at a higher resolution at a higher framerate. It will be the same this gen. However, the higher the resolution gets the less of an issue it becomes as, apparently, human eyes can only see up to a fixed number. At the moment 4k on TVs only actually makes a difference on TVs greater than a certain size (AFAIK 58 inches). It also makes a difference if you are playing on a close monitor. So we are getting to the limit of what makes a difference resolution-wise. So assuming that the developers can nail in 60 fps stable on consoles well then the more powerful PC rig is not actually delivering a much better visual experience to the user (sure the numbers are better). Remember developers develop for the biggest market not the best tech – consoles restrict PCs. This is why I think the Steam o/s is so important. If the streaming is successful (go 801.11ac) it could mean that that the PC market grows and that could mean more AAA exclusives developed for PC, that can take advantage of all the extra power so you could have a 24 v 24 mech game for example as opposed to 6v6.

This is the generation were one of them is going to die out. Either PS or XB wont surivie this generation.
And the main reason is that, besides being “differant”, they are glorified, underpowered PC’s.

          • UrbanCr33per

            January 30, 2014 at 09:41

True … I agree with that … but the funny thing is that console gamers tend to say that graphics isn’t so important when comparing consoles to PCs, but then they turn around and say the graphics performance differences between Xbox One and PS4 are insurmountable. It really doesn’t make sense. Either graphics parity between Xbox One and PS4 is insignificant, or if it is an issue then console gamers should be looking to PC.

          • Spathi

            January 30, 2014 at 09:48

It is a fine line really. One must differentiate between pure graphical prowess and gameplay suffering because of a lack of power, and if indeed, is it suffering to such an extent that a console gamer will trade his console “convenience” for better gameplay (being subjective in most instances).

I’m still not sure which way I’m going this gen. The Division on PC and Star Citizen makes me want to go PC, but the Sony exclusives and more social aspect of the PS4 makes me want to go the console route…and unfortunately, gaming has become super expensive so not sure I’ll get more than one this gen.

          • UrbanCr33per

            January 30, 2014 at 10:01

The Xbox 360 and PS3 were substantially cheaper than equivalent PCs at a time when they were quite on par with PC graphics, which made them a great option … but the problem with Xbox One and PS4 is that one can now get a more powerful PC for the price of a “next-gen” console, and if you factor in the cost of games and subscription fees, you see that console gaming has turned on its head. It’s not the cheaper gaming option that offers performance close to PC any more … now it is the more expensive option that offers less performance along with a bunch of non-game features that will never be available in SA … stuff like the TV and media services which we never get.

Every gamer wants a better looking game – I believe this is universally
true of gaming. The difference with PC folk is that desire to have the
best. This does not mean that console gamers should ignore this aspect
completely when choosing a new console. It is a natural inclination to
want something better. When I go next-gen I would like the best possible
graphical experience for my hard earned money, but remaining within the
console realm which is my preference. It doesn’t bother me that PC is far better, because I’m not obsessive over it.

          • UrbanCr33per

            January 30, 2014 at 10:27

Personally, I’m not that bothered about graphics. Consoles do offer a whole ecosystem which happens to be the one area where PC is far behind … (Steam is rather far behind, and anyone who argues otherwise hasn’t tried out XBL or PSN). The important thing for me is the quality of games. Personally, I prefer console gaming to PC gaming.

My point, however, was that I don’t understand how one can make graphics performance to be such a big deal on consoles, not in light of PC. In a way it’s like saying a Tata Indica is the best car to buy because it goes 5km/h faster than Kia Picanto … when Porsche Boxster goes 170km/h faster. I’m saying that one cannot use graphics performance as an important measure without excluding PC … and yes, there are lots of areas where PC is lacking, but then one needs to include these areas when comparing Xbox One and PS4 as well.

          • Chip

            January 30, 2014 at 13:56

So you are saying that if I’m shopping for a car I should ignore the fact that car A has a 1400 engine vs 1600 in car B, because there’s no way it will ever match up to the monster Porsche? In other words what is the point in caring about getting something slightly better since it will never be the best. I’m sorry but this makes no sense to me. I want the positives of a console with as much power under the hood as I can get. I think it’s quite simple.

          • UrbanCr33per

            January 31, 2014 at 09:51

No … that’s not quite what I’m saying. I’m saying that it makes no sense putting so much emphasis on the fact that Car A goes 5km/h faster than Car B when you takes into account that a Car C goes 170km/h faster and costs the same price.

I’m saying that if Car A, Car B and Car C cost roughly the same price (which they do), then you can only focus on performance if Car C is your reference point … because in light of the performance of Car C, the performance difference between Car A and Car B is totally insignificant. So if you prefer Car A, then it can’t be because of the performs the best … it has to be for other reason, like you like the look of it, or you like it’s economy, or it features or whatever else … but if you’re going to buy a car based on performance, then only Car C makes sense … because it’s cost/power ratio is exponentially better.

Anyway … enough of the car metaphor.

Most people choose to buy a console as it’s a cheaper option. Getting a PC with superior hardware costs 2 – 3 times the price you would pay for a console, not to mention the constant upgrading to keep up with technology developments to stay current. Remeber that majority of hard working people in South Africa don’t have that kind of money to splurge. Gaming is an expensive hobby so in my opinion, PC is a dying breed where as console is the future

Based on that chart “last-gen” consoles were only marginally ahead of PC when they came out. Not sure if you can call that ground breaking. Besides that, I know a lot of guys who joined “last-gen” years after they came out, at which point PC’s were already far ahead. This did not seem to bother anyone last time.

In theory, the last generation was around for 8 years when it was released is could do in some cases what a pc could not. The main sales pitch was advertising and word of mouth,
People are much more connected, informed and tech savy, so it should curb quite a lot of blind buying, but then i though about Apple products and the following it has although many things can do the same/more for less/better.

It may be out in Oct, but what about all the features? I mean it’s touted as the next big thing, as in, big in your living room. How will that work in SA? Is MS approaching 3rd party vendors to add apps to the machine? Butlers? God forbid Debonair? Can I order a Spur burger from the dashboard? Will Supersport come with ‘fantasy league rugby’? Mmm, not so sure about this. At least we are getting faster internet each month and the price is going down… Just a lot of work needs to be done before this is a fully functional machine like its Merican counterpart…

Ever since I got faster internet in November half the time it is so slow that I can’t even load a speed test. This seems to be a problem across all the providers in certain areas so it is probably an infrastructure last mile thing.

Hows the 2mb? Recently signed up for 2mb, waiting for line convert. Not too happy about the 70 gig threshold but not a big downloader though

It’s fine. I dl a series in about 15/20 mins and movies in 35. I was paying R339 for a 1mb, but telkom has upped them all so moved onto the 70 throttle line. Haven’t dl 70 gigs in a month ever I think.

Yea, i also think it will release in October, because if you think about it…Xbox 360 was also released in SA in October, coz RAGE is also on. So what better way for them to release this on a event like this? its all marketing at the end of the day…

I really was a huge Xbox 360 fan… Hell I owned 3 of them and paid for 2!!! I bought a PS3 in 2010 just for the exclusives I missed out on… And then Microsoft did the whole go screw yourselves we are doing what we want and we don’t care if you like it….
Now I own a PS4 and won’t go back to Microsoft again!!! I am loyal but don’t kick me too hard or I will bite your f…… leg off!!

It’s not as bad as it was before. SEACOM offers redunancy over EASSy and SAT-3 and like it or not, it’s the largest capacity undersea cable we have.

It hasn’t been down on my side for a year and half now. Maybe it was down and my ISP quietly switched me over. The ironic bit is that the servers hosting PSN content are mirrored at the SEACOM datacenter 😉

Hi, using a UK account and it works perfectly! Watching TV just saying “Xbox go to Powerstar Golf” etc. switches you immediately to that game where you last stopped playing! “Xbox on” and “Xbox turn off” also works every time switching not only the console but also TV and amp on and off!!????
It’s really that convenient that I prefer using voice!!

Cool bro. Now the ball is in the court of Microsoft South Africa’s marketing department. If they are not careful the XBone will become the next Wii-U. They layman just do not understand it.

Sho.. extra R1000 to be able to turn your console on/off with your voice. Expensive feature. Just think, each time you go “Xbox on” that’s R1 more than you would have spent by pressing a button instead.

Finally something resembling news on One! Personally Oct is miles away (never mind how fast January flew by). But there are obviously exclusives on the One I want to play…Forza 5 with its micro-transactions…Ryse with its micro-transactions…Killer Instinct…yes with its micro transactions.

And by the way…I am being serious. I do want one desperately. But really their pricing models seem very wrong!

Apparently Halo Spartan Assault is also micro transaction filled mess…How do you mess up Halo so much! Halo 5 is going to have EA adverts and NFL fantasy league updates at this rate!

Anyway lets see if rumour = true…

GEOFF – did you ever see the pics I uploaded of the collection you asked about way back when!

        Here it is…

1st pic – TV and sound system…at the moment just 360, PS3 and PS4 up. The question becomes IF/WHEN I get an Xbox One…where the hell do I put it!

2nd pic – cabinet with some collectibles on top (GT5, Killzone, God of War). Also houses all the consoles and my collection of Edge and Games TM magazines.

Rest – pics of games themselves. 5 double door floor to ceiling cupboards (not all full but gives room for expansion of course!). So around 750 – 800 retail games and I then have many, many more on consoles via XBL and PSN.

Thank you. Not sure pics do full justice but still… Could do with certain missing items e.g. SNES, Megadrive, Atari Jaguar. But hey in time maybe.

Am interested in buying a Rectron 5 which allows 5 different retro consoles in one. Buying the consoles is always the biggest issue – games are relatively easier to come by. But postage costs/import duties on the consoles can make it triple the price you paid.

I am lucky that my games room also acts as my workplace when I work from home. Great place to be and be surrounded by them. Makes work easier 🙂

It’s really pathetic that the console is only reaching us by the end of the year. Microsoft seriously miscalculated and will pay the price in lower sales… coz most xbox 360 owners would of rather gone with the only next gen system in the country – PS4. I’m still willing to wait BUT that depends on Titanfall still being an Xbox One exclusive. If it goes multiplatform before Xbox One reaches us, goodbye Microsoft and hello Sony.
