Oh yeah it's on

Admit it, you are all looking forward to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 being out so we can compare which version of cross platform games look best.

In the last crossover all the expectations were that the PlayStation 3 was going to destroy the Xbox 360 as it had the superior hardware (THE CELL!),  and well because it was Sony. In the end however it took years for the PlayStation 3 to match the Xbox 360 in the cross platform parity.

This time around people are once again expecting the PlayStation to win this battle,  but this time because of how well the console has been made with gamers in mind rather than trying to be a technical showcase.

One of the first and most exciting next-gen games on the chopping block is Watch Dogs and The Examiner has been chatting to people close to the game about exactly this and some of their comments are quite telling.

“Right now the frame rate we’re focusing on is a steady 30FPS, There’s always a balance, especially for open world, between the simulation and the rest.

I think for where we are, the most important thing is the steadiness and ensuring that it’s always capped the same so when you play it, it feels right.”

And they go on to state

“720p on PS3/360, 1080 on PS4, TBD on Xbox One”

And then

“Big difference between last generation and next gen. You can see it. PC can hit up to 60fps 1080, but I think they are aiming for parity with PS4”

And while the Xbox One is on the ropes they are floored with

“Both hit 30fps easy. I think Xbox One suffers a few dips from 60fps. PS4 is pretty smooth. Definitive version”

So will the year of the PlayStation finally arrive just a few years past its original intended time? Will the PlayStation 4 be the world heavyweight champion in 2014 or will the Xbox One continue its incredible comeback and take the title into the cloud?

I expect cross-platform games to look exactly the same no matter which one it’s on. I also expect lots of people to say they see differences when they actually don’t, or the difference is so tiny it may as well be meaningless.

No launch titles that I am even slightly interested in. If I could play me PS3 games I would get it in a heartbeat but I’m not gonna buy it and leave it on my shelf waiting for games while I play my PS3. Doesn’t make sense. When the Withcher 3 and Watchdogs come out then Ill buy one.

I’ll wait for those nice bundles – one which I actually want the games contained therein.

The launch lineup for both consoles is rather lackluster atm, so there really is no incentive to buy a PS4 or XB 0% (lol) at launch.

your correct. I have always advocated, gameplay/story > graphics and while I have the last of us, bioshock infinite, etc to get through I’ll keep my PS3.

Too right. I’ve made the mistake of buying too many games at once (currently have 30 on the go, about 20 of which i’m yet to finish) and it’s a bad move. Rather finish what you got, enjoy them fully, then see what’s next.

The sad part is people will buy XB1 purely on brand loyalty, even if PS4 clearly has better specs and better value for gamers. Its those people who are effectively encouraging developers to cap any extra PS4 performance to limit any disparity that between these two consoles. At the end of the day gaming on the whole suffers.

I have to disagree on the 2nd part of your statement. It’s not the brand loyal people making the devs cap their games – its the hardware manufacturers themselves. If both platforms were equal, then there’d be no capping. There’d also be no reason to buy one or the other, other than brand loyalty – which doesn’t make for very interesting stories, choices, or games. Also, graphics does not equal gameplay, so this capping thing is meaningless for yet another reason. Just make the games awesome!

The exclusives have always defined the consoles anyway, so capping multi platform games doesn’t bug me one little bit. Give me an exclusive that makes me wanna buy the console, and you got my money. Otherwise I’ll just get it on PC when it goes on sale somewhere.

My point is that if more people voted with their wallets and chose the more powerful console, that would push developers to prioritize the graphics quality of games on it without the risk of treading of anyone’s toes. There is living proof of this in the fact that PS4 and XB1 games look better than Wii-U games.

so what you are saying is i should buy a ps4 because its more powerfull? well ufortunatly it doesnt work that way, im sorry really dont want sound mean but its a rather dumb argument. the ps4 just doesnt offer me what i like and the xbox one does. the ps4 has no Ryse or Forza that remedy exclusive that looks donners fantastic. its about personal choice and what make you happy. and as far as graphics go there is very few console games that looks nearly as good as Ryse. and it isint even about that. microsoft allways release games thats more apealing to me than what sony does. for me its Halo> killzone, Forza> GT. and i did have a Ps3 but it just want that cool for ME.

Case in point. It’s the exclusives that decide purchases, not graphics. I’m still on the fence as to which of the 2 I’ll buy. I’m sad I missed some great exclusives on the PS3, but my Xbox did me proud (and is still doing so). Still, I upgraded from a PS2, which I bought for Final Fantasy and Star Ocean. It’s all about the games man, it’s all about the games.

Who knows? Maybe i’ll win the lotto and buy both so I don’t miss out – and get a Titan for my pc. One can dream.

You’re forgetting one very important thing. For the majority of gamers, graphics aren’t the most important thing in a game. My personal opinion is that if it is, then you’re missing the point. So why then should I buy the [supposedly] more powerful console?

I have the 360 and the PS3 and if a game is out on both then I opt for the 360 version because I prefer the controller. Whether it looks better on the PS3 or not is irrelevant as it looks good enough on the 360.

Example: I’m having driver issues at the moment, forcing me to play Dota 2 on half the rendering quality I usually play at. Do I enjoy it any less because of that? Hell no.

            If graphics didn’t matter there wouldn’t be a next-gen 😉

If you prefer Xbox for some other reason then cool, but anyone that says better graphics doesn’t matter to them is talking smack.. no two ways about it.

          • frikkenator

            September 30, 2013 at 12:19

Of course it matters, it’s just not the most important thing for me when making a decision around which console/game to buy.

          • iAmWeasel

            September 30, 2013 at 12:26

Fair enough.. people have different priorities. For something that costs
R6000+ I want the best possible value for my money. The things I value in a console are great fun games + excellent graphics to create an overall good experience. Most games these days are not exclusives, so for the most part you get the same games either way. So graphics on 3rd party titles is important to me.

exactly my point. i prefer the xbox 360 controller, and will most likely prefer the xbox one controller, i was also a ps2 gamer but sony controllers allways felt cheap and uncomfortable. like i said its what is best for you the gamer. i prefer xbox live over psn anyday of the week why? well because i have Lag free experience on xbox live. for example i got fifa 10 with my xbox 360 slim and also got fifa 10 when i bought my ps3. played all my fifa games on xbox 360 lag free while on psn it was unplayable. doesnt mean its like that for everyone but for me it was. another example i never ever got uncharted 2 multiplayer to work. never had a problem on xbox live. for ME the ps3 online was just a bad experience. but i had alot of fun with singleplayer. its by no means a bad system it just didnt give me the enjoyable fun the xbox 360 gives me.

the extra power doesn’t have to equal graphics that’s where your logic is flawed extra hardware = deeper story richer worlds + graphics and its not supposedly it just IS more powerfull faster chip faster gpu much faster/better ram theres no arguing that 60- 120 players in a game is better then 16-32 and hardware makes that possible its not the graphics although they sure do help

You can’t, also the PS3 faced a very hostile game media when it launched. I mean it was actually ridiculous. And yet, regardless of that hostility, it still managed to bodyslam the x360 in sales. It would be funny if the same were to happen, but with the Xbone (the current pariah) beating the media’s current favourite, the PS4.

Although, the buzz for the PS4 does seem legitimate, rather than the artificial PR that was spewed for the Xbox 360. Man it was ridiculous (I recently re-read some of the articles and the big games media outlets were clearly on the take)… no wonder, I sometimes have such a hatred for the industry.

But something has changed over the last few years, either Microsoft haven’t been holding advertisement hostage or Big Game Media is more conscious that their readers are not just ignoramus 17 year olds.
