What’s in an Xbox? Lots apparently! If there’s one message that Microsoft seems hellbent on emphasising with their next video game console, it’s power. Pure power in a raw form that’ll pave the way for games to not only look better but perform beyond the norm and load quicker than ever before.

So what’s next for the franchise and Gran Turismo Sport in particular? With the PlayStation 5 on the way and rumours of TRUE 8K POWER doing the rounds, it’s not hard to imagine Gran Turismo Sport aiming for retina-searing resolutions. Not so, says producer Kazunori Yamauchi! The man behind the franchise has his eyes set on a higher goal currently, as he’s convinced that the future of games looking damn good lies not in the number of pixels on the screen but rather at the rate they throw them at your face.

Sony and Fujifilm still lead the way in this arena, but Canon’s recent efforts are nothing to sneeze at. The EOS M5 and M6 are still a hell of a camera duo, but the company is already looking to the future for their next flagship device which according to leaks will be the Canon EOS R5.

Elgato is looking to change the video game capture game with a new device aimed at making the entire process much more fluid and simple. Say hello, to the Elgato 4K 60 S+.

One of the bigger complaints with Stadia has to do with image quality and performance. When Google first presented stadia, they suggested that Stadia would give users access to more power than both mid-gen consoles combined. They said Stadia games would leverage 10.7 GPU teraflops of computing power, along with the promise that launch games – locked behind that Stadia monthly subscription - would run at 4K and 60fps.

The new mid-gen consoles heralded the beginning of the 4K era, brining UHD gaming to the masses. Sure, you could argue that few games consistently run at the target resolution natively. Some games instead use dynamic resolution scaling or rendering techniques. That techno-disclaimer aside, a great many games are actually outputting in native 4K, especially on the Xbox One X, and they do so using setting that hover around “medium” settings, usually at 30fps. The PS4 Pro isn’t quite up to that task, and usually runs games at a lower resolution.

I think it’s quite safe to say that society as a whole hasn’t quite yet embraced 4K. Moist consumers are still happy enough with good old 1080p content, not quite willing to shell out the big bucks just yet to play games and watch media in delicious super high resolution. TV manufacturers, however, are already starting to push even higher resolutions – with both LG and Samsung trying to temp customers over to 8K.
