Final Fantasy XIV may not have had an update to throw at fans in 2020, but 2021 looks to be a big year with even bigger changes for the long-running MMORPG. During the weekend’s Final Fantasy XIV showcase, the game’s new expansion Endwalker was announced.

For veteran Final Fantasy 14 fans, Shadowbringers may just be the definitive expansion in the long history of that franchise but for newcomers such as myself who have managed to sink many hours into the product, it’s still a daunting road ahead. So daunting in fact, that Square Enix is looking to take its main chunk of opening exposition and quests, squishing them together and creating a far more condensed and streamlined start from A Realm Reborn into Heavensward.

If Final Fantasy wants to distinguish itself for future entries in the franchise, it’s going to need to revisit its roots eventually and recapture the magic that made Square Enix’s original game a breakout success so many years ago. Something that Final Fantasy XIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida would love to see in the next core numbered game.

With E3 around the corner, June is once again home to plenty of new releases.
