This week isn't just about Ratchet and Clank, but also ratchet and crank as the Playdate handheld console is coming soon! Preorders for the quirky little console, which has a crank on the side for…stuff, will go live in July. Here's the important stuff: The console itself will cost you $179, plus you can buy a few other accessories to go with it.

You didn't hear it from me, but apparently handheld consoles that can also instantly connect to a big screen TV at home are pretty popular. Nintendo knows this pretty well after selling around 85 million Switch consoles, and the owner of the biggest digital PC game marketplace in the land reckons that now might be the good time to flex some of its own muscle and get in on the game.

Sega, Sony, and Nokia, all tried to beat Nintendo at its own game, and failed. So what of Microsoft then? If any company had the time and resources to create a handheld console that could give the Nintendo 3DS or even the Switch a run for its money, it had to be the home of Xbox. Microsoft was having none of that though.

The Game & Watch is more of a neat collectible than anything else, and on that level it succeeds as a beautifully-styled retro reminder of how far gaming has come in the decades since Mario ate his first world-altering mushroom.

With Toy Fair 2020 around the corner, Hasbro is popping an early announcement, detailing how Tiger Electronics have been resurrected. Like the consoles of yesteryear, they’ll do what Tiger did best: Create cheap disposable gaming devices with easy controls, a decent battery life and hopefully they’ll be as durable as their predecessors, devices so rugged that not only could they survive a nuclear war but the arguably more destructive force that is a toddler whacking away at the console.
