Hitman developer IO now fully independent, keeps Hitman rights

Last Month, Square Enix revealed that it had cut Hitman developer IO Interactive loose, and the future of the barcoded, bald assassin was in jeopardy. In a new statement, the developer revealed that sanity has somehow prevailed. IO is now officially an independent developer again – and has kept the rights to Hitman.

There’s still plenty of work for Agent 47 to tackle and even more necks to garrotte with some fancy carbon-fibre monofilament strangling tools as IO Interactive just detailed the month of content ahead for the iconic assassin. June will see two new escalation contracts, ten featured contracts and a brand new Elusive Target added to the schedule.

Last week revealed that Square Enix had decided to dump developer IO Interactive and Hitman, because we’re not allowed to have nice things in life. That raised a number of red flags: Was Hitman now properly dead? Would anyone buy the rights to it? Even more worrying: Would one of the best games of 2016 get that second season that IO Interactive had begun building the foundation for throughout the episodic release of Hitman? Maybe!

Publisher Square Enix have decided to ditch developer IO Interactive and the Hitman franchise. The numbers don’t lie: Whereas Hitman: Absolution managed to sell over 3 million units worldwide on PC despite middling reviews (Thanks NeoGAF!), last year’s Hitman has only managed to shift just over 650 000 units so far on PC. That’s not good.
