Fans hunger to see faces ripped off, opponents beaten bloody with their own limbs and an entire slaughterhouse of finishers that make the Hostel series look like an episode of the Care Bears in comparison. That’s the true identity of Mortal Kombat, and it’s something that the upcoming film knows all too well as the latest cinematic adaptation is looking to rip the big screen a new one and find an R-rating within.

It didn’t set the US box office alight, but this Superbad-with-nerd-girls is one of the best high school comedies in a good long while. Charming and heartfelt, it breaks new representational ground without coasting on its concept.
