In an age where every game is attempting to be the be-all and end-all of its genre, the idea of the blockbuster has lost its magic, leading to a ho-hum reaction and less excitement for every new title revealed with the power of a million PR firms going supernova on the hype blitz. Eventually, the industry is going to reach a point where it needs to seriously look at how they provide their consumers with value, and the sooner that epiphany arrives the better.

It's the end of an era, as Sony's gaming division head cheese Shawn Layden is saying au revoir to the company that he has called home since 1987.

In response to Shawn Laydens comments about cross play being "open for business," a few developers have taken to the internet to contradict those statements.

Right now, there are just two games on PlayStation 4 that have full cross-platform support: Fortnite and Rocket League. Fortnite, of course, was the game that opened the gates to Sony’s walled garden. With it being as popular as it is, Sony couldn’t really ignore cross play for much longer, especially when it was shown to work just fine when it was toggled by accident.

For so many years, Sony has been leading that charge with PlayStation brand. We’re looking at the twilight of their fourth console, a machine that has helped not only make gaming more mainstream, but also more legitimate in the eyes of a public that once considered these devices to be nothing more than murder simulator boxes. So what does the future hold in store for PlayStation and gaming in general?

Over time people change, and their tastes change along with them. The things you liked, or the things that defined you when the PlayStation Network launched in March 2006 may no longer be the sort of thing that tickles you in the year of our loot box 2017. Users have been begging to change PSN names for what seems like forever, but Sony’s hand-waved or explained the possibility away - but that feature may be coming.
