Nvidia’s GeForce NOW cloud streaming exits beta – and it should make Stadia worry

Stadia’s just been dealt another kick in the teeth. Nvidia’s officially launched its GeForce Now streaming platform. It’s a similar service in that it allows players to stream games they buy through GeForce now from just about any PC, removing the need for expensive hardware. As with Stadia it’s a tiered service. There’s a free tier that lets you access your games from anywhere, but limits game sessions to just an hour. There’s a $5 per month service that gives you priority access and extended session length, but also uses top tier hardware in the cloud, even enabling advanced features like RTX.

GiantWaffle, or Andrew Bodine to his mum and dad, took on the challenge to set a world record, and after 572 hours over the course of a month, he has reached the finish line.

Stadia offers pre-emptive refunds to players who bought launch games that went free

Stadia launched less than two weeks ago, with its early-access Founder’s Edition giving Stadia Pro access to those who jumped in early. As part of Stadia Pro, users are granted a handful of free games as part of the subscription, similar to how Games with Gold and PlayStation Plus work. When the system launched the free games offered were Destiny 2 and Samurai Shodown (which are both excellent games, by the way).

Oh hey, Google Stadia is out, and by all accounts, largely works as intended. There are a bunch of caveats though, and the consensus amongst those who’ve had time with the streaming service is that it’s good, but not quite ready for prime time. It’s also erratic, and there’s an image quality problem – so, unsurprisingly, most feel that it’s better to play on consoles or PCs.
