So the big news last week in mini game development is the company behind the phenomenally viral Draw Something (OMGPOP) sold themselves to Zynga, the mammoth Facebook gaming company, for an incredible $200 million.
But while we can discuss the merits of a copy of Pictionary being sold for $200 million for ages that’s not what really hit the news over the weekend.
No the real news is that the CEO of OMGPOP apparently went POP and tweeted the following at his colleague,
The one omgpop employee who turned down joining Zynga was the weakest one on the whole team,
Ouch.. then he carried on
Selfish people make bad games. Good riddance! What’s so interesting about success is the number of failures who try to ride on your back. Shay Pierce is just one of many…
The tweets have now been deleted but not before they flew around the Internet and the hatred against the CEO, Dan Porter, was ratcheted up a few hundred levels.
His anger seems to have come about because Shay Pierce refused to join Zynga and effectively called them evil, which is a feeling shared by many gaming fans across the planet.
Oddly enough the only person who appears to have convinced Dan Porter that his tweets were a PR disaster in the making is the incredibly influential developer of Minecraft, Notch, who tweeted
You are an insane idiot.
After that Dan deleted his tweets and sent out an apology
I’m sorry for what I said on Twitter last night. No excuses.
It’s like a freaking soap opera isn’t it… so will this make you stop playing Draw Something and hate Zynga that little bit more or is it a private spat that we really have no business trying to interpret?
