Sometimes you just can’t be in front of your PC or on on the couch, but that doesn’t mean that the gaming has to stop. Whether you’re a commuter, waiting in a queue or evacuating your bowels, there’s always something  to play – whether it’s on a dedicated handheld like Nintendo’s 3DS, Sony’s PSP or on a mobile phone or tablet.

Here are the nominees for handheld/mobile game:

Super Mario 3D Land
Jetpack Joyride
Infinity Blade II
Ghost Recon: Shadow Warrior
Mario Kart 7
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

And the award goes to:

 Mk7

Winner: Mario Kart 7

This was an exceptionally tough choice; Nintendo’s really delivered the goods on the 3DS of late and its two shining beacons – Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 are both excellent titles; Super Mario Land is an exceptional platformer, playing in 3D but retaining the classic fun of the more popular 2D titles through some very clever level design. In the end though, we opted for Mario Kart 7 for its robust, lag-free online features (Functional online? In a Nintendo title? What gives?) and insanely fun multiplayer – which you can share with 7 people using just one cartridge.

Runner-Up: Super Mario 3D Land

Editor. I'm old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time - they were capable of being masterpieces. I'm here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.
