Black Friday is a curious thing. After Thanksgiving, many US citizens line up in stores that stock electronic goods and proceed to lose their humanity by going absolutely bananas over heavily discounted prices. It’s generally a good time to sell of game consoles, and acts as a precursory gauge for holiday sales. If the Wii’s performance this Black Friday is any indication, the Wii will be sitting under many, many Christmas tress this year.

“We know that Black Friday and that entire week is a key selling week and it is important for products like ours to have a jump in momentum and we were fortunate to see that,” Nintendo of America’s stuffed Turkey of a boss, Reggie Fils-Aime told USA today.

The ageing console – set to be replaced next year – has managed its biggest Black Friday ever, selling over 500 000 units. That’s a heck of a lot of Yule-tide waggle. Accompanying the Wii hardware sales boost was The Legend of Zelda: Skyward sword which has become the fastest selling Zelda title in history. Since its November 20 launch, it’s sold over 535 000 copies. Sales of the sow-to-go 3DS reportedly increased 325% during the week of Black Friday too.

“For us, it really was driven by unique and powerful software and what gives us confidence is that we still have more software to launch in the balance of this holiday period.”
