Rumour: Is this what the new Godzilla is going to look like?

One of the surprises coming out of Comic-Con was the footage shown by director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) of his proposed Godzilla reboot. More surprising than the fact that people still really get excited for Godzilla, was the fact that Edwards claimed to want to have this film grounded in reality somehow. (Yeah, because I see lizards the size of skyscrapers in my daily life all the time.)

If these leaked pieces of concept art turn out to be true though, then that might be an even harder task as I don’t recall ever seeing lizards this spiky before.

So basically a mutated lizard humped a mutated porcupine? (No wonder there have been so many earthquakes in Asia lately) Because that’s the impression I’m getting from these shots.

The images come courtesy of Bleeding Cool (who got it off one of their regular contributors over on the Malaysian Lowyat forum) who confirms that while this is still firmly in the realm of rumour, despite the Legendary Pictures logo being slapped onto them, the design does match the glimpses of the creature seen in the Comic-Con footage.

I’ll admit that Godzilla has never truly grabbed my attention (unless it’s some of Warren Ellis’ Godzilla Bukkake, of course), so I really am ambivalent to this new spiky visage, but what do you guys think?

A man of many passions – but very little sleep – I’ve been geeking out over movies, video games, comics, books, anime, TV series and lemon meringues as far back as I can remember. So show up for the geeky insight, stay for the delicious pastries.

Hahaha.  Godzilla Bukkake.  I just had to go check that out.  Made my day.

    • If you’ve never read Ellis’ Crooked Little Vein, you are seriously doing yourself a disservice. It’s one of the funniest things I’ve ever come across, and Godzilla Bukkake is just the tip of the absurdity iceberg.

Cool.  I’ll put it on my list.  Reminds me that I need to go have a look at Freak Angels again.  Been ages since I checked it out.

  • wtf is that thing?

  • I don’t know,I like the design of the Roland Emmerich movie more.

  • Can we stop calling every return to a franchise as a ‘reboot’? Is this even a reboot? And of what? The Japanese movies or the American one? It would be better to refer to this project as the next iteration or cash-in.

At this rate one day we’ll hear about Casablanca or Apocalypse Now ‘reboots’. It’s a bullshit word that marketing movie types stole.

    • Well I’d definitely consider this a reboot, as it’s looking to reinvent the mythology of the character/monster.

      • Ah, okay – so a reboot is an excuse to fuck with canon – throw out that baby with the bathwater. Still doesn’t add up – the Godzilla mythology has hardly been consistent.

It’s still a bullshit marketing term.

        • Well, look this is unfortunately a horrible example of it, seeing as how there have already been so many different iterations of Godzilla before. But generally, the moment a film is not a continuation of an existing property, but rather reinventing it, then it would be a reboot.

          • They reinvent the wheel, but still call it a wheel and it still looks like a wheel. A tweaked story and new actors is not reinvention.

Zack Snyder’s Dawn Of The Dead was reinvention. Rob Zombie’s Halloween was reinvention. Batman Begins was reinvention. 12 Monkeys was reinvention. The Departed was reinvention. It’s a credit you only get to put on a film after it proves it’s not just a rehash with a different coat of paint.

I remember this ‘reboot’ thing. It used to be called a ‘remake’ and invited many sneers. I still conclude: ‘reboot’ is a bs marketing term.

Hey, maybe while they are at it, why not throw in some Spectreman in there?
