FFD: Given the choice are you an evil bastard or a good guy?

I don’t know why it is, but I have a terribly tough time being a bad guy in games. In games like inFamous, for example, I always, always choose the side that aligns with good karma. Same for something like Mass Effect, where it took me three playthrough to finally start going for the renegade options. Darryn on the other hand almost always chooses the path that allows him to kick kittens and eat babies.

I think it’s because deep down, Darryn really is an evil bastard – though he keeps telling me it’s because games are fantasy and he gets to do things in games that he wouldn’t do in the real world. I just don’t buy it.  I think he harbours despotic, megalomaniac tendencies, like myself.

I’m sure he’s the sort of bloke who blew up Megaton City in Fallout 3 and killed all of little lamplight’s children all while giggling and twirling his waxen moustache.

Tell us! In games that give you the option: do you choose to be a nice person, or a gleefully evil twonk like Darryn does?

Geoffrey Tim

Editor. I’m old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time – they were capable of being masterpieces. I’m here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

  • CAE9872

    The good guy whenever possible…

  • ReaperOfSquirrels

It really depends on the game. I was always evil on Black and White, pure sith on KoToR, chaotic evil on Neverwinter Nights, etc. Some other games you can end up royally screwing yourself over if you go evil/bad.

But all in all, I’d rather be evil in games.

    • Brady miaau

      Watch this guy closely……….

      🙂

    • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

I really hate it that in some games you get totally screwed for killing every asshat you encounter. I feel hard done by when games like Dishonoured rate you somehow worse for killing absolutely everyone you find. Some of them DESERVED it, hey!

      • Rock789

Ok… o_O Let’s just all calm down, shall we… **backs away slowly** 🙂

        • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

Look. You’ll be fine here. Stand near the bar. Order a drink. You’ve got nothing to worry about. Unless you’re the sort of guy Connor and Murphy would target…

But seriously. Is it *dark* to kill people who deserve it? It’s not fair that some games don’t let you explore that middle ground and just label it as bad (or worse than the good guy path).

      • ReaperOfSquirrels

Yeah, that asshat looked at me funny, so I shot him in the face… why are you penalizing me for that? FFS… stupid game.

        • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

The WORST is when they turn their backs on you. The disrespect….

    • Viking Of Science

      Lawful Evil for Life.

  • Broseph

I just keep them guessing *queue evil laugh*

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

Goody two-shoes FTW! I tend to regard my character as a reflection of myself, so I don’t feel very comfortable going the evil route. That said, I have no problem being an evil bastard towards the bad guy – because karma’s a bitch.

    • JJ the Reus

I keep telling myself…one day, one day I’ll be a bad guy (espcially in Fallout), but it never happens.

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

lol I know! 3 times I started Fallout 3 & each time I disarmed the bomb.

        • JJ the Reus

Same here. In Skyrim I could never do the Thieves Guild missions.

          • Admiral Chief 0

            Pffffffffffffffff

          • Admiral Chief 0

YET YOU ROB STORES IN PAYDAY?????

          • JJ the Reus

That’s what the game is about. Besides, in PayDay I see myself as a Robin Hood figure AND I’m the poor. 😉
I do however lose it when a civ tries to call the police. I don’t even bother tying them up, they made their choice.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

Are you going to bark all day little doggie…

          • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

Doing the right thing? Lead BUNNYCHOW, peasant!

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

Oh I did those, and the Dark Brotherhood. Generally the people you’re robbing/killing aren’t that great to begin with – otherwise I’d be torn.

          • Brady miaau

Yeah, those were not too bad to do, some of the dark brother a bit disturbing to my moral compass, but all in all ok

          • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

Best moment in my life was when I did the Dark Brotherhood missions in Oblivion and I had to go into a Murder Mystery style house and kill everyone without them knowing it was me. THE SWEET RELEASE of speaking to the lone survivors as their numbers dwindle, as they confide in you, because clearly it can’t be you! It has to be that Argonion over there. But not you, dear friend. What is this? STABBY STAB STAB!

          • JJ the Reus

That’s good to know. Guess what I’m doing the weekend then. 🙂

          • Matthew Holliday

skyrim thieves guild and dark brotherhood hardly felt like the badguys.
            morality barely featured in skyrim.

        • ReaperOfSquirrels

I blew that little town up on my 2nd play through.

        • Viking Of Science

In Fallout, my favourite Evil thing to do is convince Moira to give up writing the Wasteland Survival Guide. You Get the “Dreamcrusher” perk. which decreases the chance a crit will be scored on you by 50%.

          And then blow up megaton….

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

            I couldn’t do that :/

          • Viking Of Science

you should, that perk is awesome.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

Yes it is, but I still can’t do it lol

  • Norm (@e3zype3zy)

    The good guy.

  • Hammersteyn

Good then BAD! Oh so very, very bad

  • JJ the Reus

I’m usually so damn good that I irritate myself. I feel bad when I accidentally kill someone and I can’t even bring myself to pick-pocket in Skyrim.

    • Alien Emperor Trevor

haha they look poor, I can’t pickpocket them.

      • JJ the Reus

I know man. In Splinter Cell I always let the people live – but of course in Splinter Cell it makes no difference what you choose since they all have exactly the same outcome. Why even bother giving us the option then?

        • Alien Emperor Trevor

What I did in Dishono(u)red was leave all the regular guards alone, killed all those bastard elite guards. Seemed like justice to me.

          • Admiral Chief 0

I choked the snot out of all of em, blink, put body away, choke, blink, etc

          • Unavengedavo

            That just sounds dirty O_o

          • JJ the Reus

I tried, as far as I could, to not disturb anyone in Dishono(u)red. But those guards that can blink. I’m sorry, there can be only one.

          • Mossel

In Dishonored I killed anything with lungs. It was just so easy being bad!

          • Unavengedavo

So you left the AI fish alone?

          • Mossel

The fish and I have an understanding.

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

          • Mossel

    • Brady miaau

Syirm, the cannibal quest. Left me sick to stomach.

      • Alien Emperor Trevor

I remember that I think, was it the one where you get a Daedric artifact? I killed them all instead. And ended up not being able to get the achievement for collecting all the Daedric artifacts, that annoyed me.

  • Admiral Chief 0

Currently LS in Kotor 2 (WITH THE RESTORED CONTENT….SO DAMN COOL!)

    • Brady miaau

I am also playing that (Each night this week so far), got lisghtside almost max as I hit first planet after telos

      • Admiral Chief 0

Have you installed the restored content mod and the droid planet mod? I’m on my way to do the droid factory now, and the restored content! OH MY SACK, so much of EPIC!!!

        • Brady miaau

Indeed I have, so much fun to be had.

Had a weird glitch, Nar Shaada reset map and all conversations and st points were reset, but quest progress was kept. Oh well, still awesome. Built HK47 already, man is not easy to get influence with him, cause not evil!

          Still helping Vogga against Goto

          • Admiral Chief 0

You know that if you lose influence against him it actually also works? Since it works on a scale, if you continue to lose influence against him, he will then tell you more etc

            Same with Kreia etc

          • Brady miaau

So I can find droid factory without high influence with HK?

Must I keep HK in my party at all time, just in case more droids show up?

          • Admiral Chief 0

No need, (torture scene is LOOOOL)
Just keep on being all Jedi around him, he keeps on disliking that. I can confirm that with very low influence he teaches you about fighting Jedi

    • Unavengedavo

Where can I get this? O_o

      • Admiral Chief 0

Just serch for TSL restored content mod, v1.82 and then get droid planet download as well!

I’ve literally geeked out at every little amazing thing they restored! (I played around with prior mods, but the 1.82 is FAR superior!!!)

        • Unavengedavo

Awesome, thanks! But this will have to wait till Monday

  • ReaperOfSquirrels

Also if there are two paths… then I’ll go good and then evil… because I’ll probably enjoy the evil path more XD

  • Admiral Chief 0

You HAVE to play as both…for SCIENCE!

    • Guild

Exactly, I usually play through both scenarios. But usually bad first, then good and in some cases if possible the neutral line

    • Brady miaau

      Ah, but do you?

      • Admiral Chief 0

        Indeed I do yes

        • Brady miaau

Really. I have tried several times in games, going all the back to Baldurs Gate. I cannot sustain the dark side, not even for a short while.

I want to, so that I can see a different story or outcome, but I just cannot.

    • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

But can you be truly bad in a Telltale game? Cause if you’re a dickbag in one of those, then the Darkside is strong in you.

Can. Never. Be. Mean. To. Clementine.

      • Admiral Chief 0

LOL, indeed, I tried it, felt badddddd and went to the naughty corner to punish myself

        • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

When she sighs, I feel like I’ve let the world end. Like there will never be anyone who hopes I turn out okay again. The last light of civilisation has ended, and I’m the Reaper left at the end. Watching it all burn. Because life sucks.

Spoilers: JUST LET ME CUT YOUR HAIR, CLEMENTINE! IT’LL BE OKAY! DON’T SIGH ALL THE TIME!

          • Admiral Chief 0

            [CLEMENTINE WILL REMEMBER THAT]

          • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

            LOL

  • Admiral Chief 0

    Usually GG first

  • JJ the Reus

I have ONE exclusion where I tend to be the bad guy. PayDay 2. I tend to kill hostages rather than tie them up, just because it’s faster and less hassle.

    • Admiral Chief 0

      I’ve noticed…

  • Brady miaau

Always, but always the good guy (or girl) in a game. Always.

In games like Fallout I sometimes skirt the line, but always the “good” choice.

  • Hey, destroying Megaton City was all self-defense man. Against boredom.

    • Alien Emperor Trevor

      WWBD? 🙁

  • Dark Overlord Jaybles

Always tend to be good yet for infamous second son it was evil all the way! It’s just too easy to be evil, and fun….. I might need to see a psychologist

  • Norm (@e3zype3zy)

Speaking of Fallout 3, I’m yet to play it. Is it quite good?

    • Brady miaau

      Is it quite good? Pfff.

Is it excellent, with all DLC? yes. Pay it.

New Vegas is fantastic, but its DLC’s let me down a bit.

      • Norm (@e3zype3zy)

Awesome, I shall play it then!

      • JJ the Reus

The DLC’s are pretty much just extra loot.
But the game is brilliant enough as it is.

      • Admiral Chief 0

New Vegas DLC was some of the best I’ve ever played

        • Brady miaau

Lonesome Road? Boring, boring, boring. i hated every minute of it

          • JJ the Reus

Admiral is used to the lonesome road, that’s why he loved it. 😉

          • Admiral Chief 0

            …says the unmarried one

          • Brady miaau

            Sjoe, eina!

          • JJ the Reus

In an 8 year relationship. I think I’m okay. 😉

          • Brady miaau

Yeah, I dated my wife for about 8 or 9 years before we got married. All good!

My wife actually “proposed” to me, to be honest. I liked status quo!

          • JJ the Reus

            Soooon

          • Brady miaau

Good luck and do it well.

Remember, weddings do not have to be expensive to be fun. For example, we had a spitbraai, was cheaper on catering and the food was AWESOME.

My mother in law and I paid about 50/50 for the wedding. My brothers in law both had pricey weddings but no honeymoon. Priorities.

          • JJ the Reus

I like that. Luckily both myself and my gf aren’t into the whole showy thing, so we want to keep it as easy and simple as possible.

          • Admiral Chief 0

Basic wedding, and spend lots on honeymoon!

          • Brady miaau

            Yeah, this

          • Brady miaau

Great, my wife and I the same. Relaxed and calm.

Good luck, sir JJ. and the future Mrs Sir JJ

          • JJ the Reus

Thanks. The one ring is actually already on order. Though we’re not planning a trip to Mordor. ;P

          • Admiral Chief 0

So you will be bound in darkness?
            😛

          • JJ the Reus

I’m just curious to see if anyone goes invisible once they put the ring on.

          • Admiral Chief 0

As long as your sex life does not go invisible, you will be fine!

          • JJ the Reus

Might as well call it the RROD then. HEheh

          • Admiral Chief 0

            XDXDXDXD

          • Alien Emperor Trevor

            Duh, who honeymoons in JHB?

          • JJ the Reus

Those who find Mordor too welcoming? Trolololo

          • Admiral Chief 0

            😛

        • konfab aka derp

Agreed Old world blues is kek

    • JJ the Reus

Fallout 3 is excellent. New Vegas too.
You have not lived until you’ve played Fallout 3.
So says my bottlecap collection at home.

  • Guild

Looking at the header I think Darren needs some dental work maybe a malicious dentist to try compensate and pull some evil from Darren

  • Skyblue

Depends on the game and the gravitas of the storytelling. I couldn’t be the bad guy in Bioshock but it’s easy and more fun in inFamous.

  • Hondsepop

Eventually I always gravitate towards the light, no mater how attractive the dark side looks.

    • Hondsepop

Must just add, the above is only applicable to single player story lines. When it comes to multiplayer, I’ll stab you in the back with a grin on my face.

      • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

Someone call TF2. We found the Spy!

  • Alex Hicks

I play mostly good, because I’m, while not exactly angelic, at least on the whiter side of grey. Have you read this before: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-09-21-bastard-of-the-old-republic

Sums up my own struggle playing evil aligned figures pretty well.

    • Brady miaau

      Great article, that

  • Admiral Chief 0

    (screenshot, refresh for image)

    What do you think????

    • Alex Hicks

Ah yes – so good the light literally shines out of your arse!

      • Admiral Chief 0

        +3 STR shiny!

    • Alien Emperor Trevor

He looks like a GIANT TOOL! 😉

      • Admiral Chief 0

YOUR FACE IS ON A GIANT FOOL

        😛

        • Alien Emperor Trevor

          lulz

    • Brady miaau

Same, but I always play a female. much more fun. Woman kicking arse and all that. Amuse me.

  • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

It depends on the game. KotoR II I was the biggest cement cracked face bugger you’d find. But in ME > ME 3 I was a bit more of a UN groupie. So honestly it really depends on the games and the sort of questions they pose. I honestly prefer games that let your morality unfold a little more dynamically (not so many clear black v white decisions – but rather more ambiguous or morally gray).

In Black and White 2, for instance, I could never slap my Creature. Not with my puppy sitting on the floor next to my chair gazing up at me with those blue piercing and judging eyes. Depends on the scenario. 😛

    • JJ the Reus

PayDay brings out the worst in people.

      • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

I really want to pick that up – it keeps going on sale – but just don’t know enough about it. Is it deliciously evil and fun?

        • JJ the Reus

          Both yes.
And the community online is quite great. Most people try to help you out, though, like everywhere else, there are some big d-bags. Definitely worth it though. I’m in 150 hours now and still have a long way to go. The DLC’s keep it interesting and with the Hotline Miami DLC coming it should be even more fun.

          • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

150 hours for a title these days is pretty solid. Thanks for that. I’m really keen on feedback from people here. You are all so much more reliable than Steam. 😛

On a sidenote, I picked up Endless Legend the other day on a friends recommendation and almost cried because it was so awesome. Was about to buy Warlock 2 as well, so it came at a really good time! All hail the Lazygamer community!

          • JJ the Reus

I love Warlock 1, haven’t tried 2 yet. Never heard of Endless Legend though, but I see it’s turn-based fantasy strategy….I’m sold.

          • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

It is so in depth, that I had to play the tutorial just to learn how to build. The factions are so ridiculously different, that each new faction I have to learn how to play the game from scratch again.

One faction can’t even expand! They get one city. And then just convert people to their weird ass bobble head religion. IT MAKES NO SENSE AND I FRIGGIN LOVE IT.

*Edit: There is even a Zerg like type Scourge faction that aren’t allowed to be at peace (or ally) with other factions. Their backstory demands constant war (as they eat the corpses of their enemies for their population to grow).

          • JJ the Reus

            That’s what I missed in Warlock…converting people.
Will definitely have a look. If you’re getting PayDay2 on pc let me know if you’re up for a game.

          • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

Yeah I’ll probably pick it up on PC. Will actually pin it to my wishlist now and think about getting it soon. But a ton of good titles coming out very soon as well so may need to just think about how to spend my limited wallet funds.

          • JJ the Reus

Same here. I am itching for a new game this weekend. Now that I’ve checked out Endless Legend I’m so intrigued.

          • Admiral Chief 0

            KOTOR 2 and TFU!!!!!

          • JJ the Reus

            Oh you

          • SargonTheGreatPandaOfAkkad

If you honestly want a complex 4x fantasy strategy game, then you should really check it out. The night I picked it up, I was saying “one more turn” till about 6am the next morning. And then I was still late to work the next day. 😛

If you do pick it up – be aware that you can upgrade districts to level 2 (cities actually need to be structured well or else they suffer morale penalties for you building a city like a douche). I was not aware of this until my third game and it finally dawned on me why I always had unhappy cities (which slows down expansion so much).

*Edit: This is because the tutorial hates you and doesn’t want you to ever win. A con is that the AI is good – but could be better. Play on normal or above. The higher difficulties actually get a lot more tough.

  • Rock789

Yeah, I tend to go the goodie-two-shoes route in games first. On the second playthrough, I’ll let my true self show, and kill every living thing within a ten mile radius… Wait, what?! Sorry about that guys – musta passed out for a second. Guess it’s all these late gaming nights catching up with me… 😉

  • konfab aka derp

Mass effect stands out for me as the renegade/paragon decisions are not quite as black and white as other games.

  • Mossel

I’m trying so hard to go all out renegade in ME2, but I just feel so bad for all those guys!

  • Karl Roomaney

Evil just makes things fun, no law that can stop you from being evil

    • Brady miaau

Perhaps the law defines the evil?

  • Unavengedavo

Don’t remember who said it, but true power comes from resisting the dark side. I find playing the good side to be more of a challenge

    • JJ the Reus

      Quite true

  • hubble19

When the first SimCity came out I used to build the prettiest city, parks everywhere no crime etc.etc….then unleash every possible disaster on it. hehehe.
Did pretty much the same in Civ…’what, weapons of mass destruction? Me?! Noooooo….’

  • fred

Generally i’m the good guy , unless someone pisses me off.

    • Brady miaau

Yeah, a lot to be said for that. For example, I killed Udina in ME3 first chance I got, been itching to do that since ME1

  • Sageville

    Chaotic Neutral

    • Brady miaau

CN in the strict AD&D sense? Mad hatter stuff, mad hatter!

But is interesting to play like that, I give you that.

  • J_Joestar

Flip a coin on play through 1, then just do the other one on play through 2.
