FFD: Given the choice are you an evil bastard or a good guy?

I don’t know why it is, but I have a terribly tough time being a bad guy in games. In games like inFamous, for example, I always, always choose the side that aligns with good karma. Same for something like Mass Effect, where it took me three playthrough to finally start going for the renegade options. Darryn on the other hand almost always chooses the path that allows him to kick kittens and eat babies.

I think it’s because deep down, Darryn really is an evil bastard – though he keeps telling me it’s because games are fantasy and he gets to do things in games that he wouldn’t do in the real world. I just don’t buy it.  I think he harbours despotic, megalomaniac tendencies, like myself.

I’m sure he’s the sort of bloke who blew up Megaton City in Fallout 3 and killed all of little lamplight’s children all while giggling and twirling his waxen moustache.

Tell us! In games that give you the option: do you choose to be a nice person, or a gleefully evil twonk like Darryn does?

It really depends on the game. I was always evil on Black and White, pure sith on KoToR, chaotic evil on Neverwinter Nights, etc. Some other games you can end up royally screwing yourself over if you go evil/bad.

But all in all, I’d rather be evil in games.

I really hate it that in some games you get totally screwed for killing every asshat you encounter. I feel hard done by when games like Dishonoured rate you somehow worse for killing absolutely everyone you find. Some of them DESERVED it, hey!

Look. You’ll be fine here. Stand near the bar. Order a drink. You’ve got nothing to worry about. Unless you’re the sort of guy Connor and Murphy would target…

But seriously. Is it *dark* to kill people who deserve it? It’s not fair that some games don’t let you explore that middle ground and just label it as bad (or worse than the good guy path).

Goody two-shoes FTW! I tend to regard my character as a reflection of myself, so I don’t feel very comfortable going the evil route. That said, I have no problem being an evil bastard towards the bad guy – because karma’s a bitch.

That’s what the game is about. Besides, in PayDay I see myself as a Robin Hood figure AND I’m the poor. 😉
I do however lose it when a civ tries to call the police. I don’t even bother tying them up, they made their choice.

Best moment in my life was when I did the Dark Brotherhood missions in Oblivion and I had to go into a Murder Mystery style house and kill everyone without them knowing it was me. THE SWEET RELEASE of speaking to the lone survivors as their numbers dwindle, as they confide in you, because clearly it can’t be you! It has to be that Argonion over there. But not you, dear friend. In Fallout, my favourite Evil thing to do is convince Moira to give up writing the Wasteland Survival Guide. You Get the “Dreamcrusher” perk. which decreases the chance a crit will be scored on you by 50%.

          And then blow up megaton….

Depends on the game and the gravitas of the storytelling. I couldn’t be the bad guy in Bioshock but it’s easy and more fun in inFamous.

It depends on the game. KotoR II I was the biggest cement cracked face bugger you’d find. But in ME > ME 3 I was a bit more of a UN groupie. So honestly it really depends on the games and the sort of questions they pose. I honestly prefer games that let your morality unfold a little more dynamically (not so many clear black v white decisions – but rather more ambiguous or morally gray).

In Black and White 2, for instance, I could never slap my Creature. Not with my puppy sitting on the floor next to my chair gazing up at me with those blue piercing and judging eyes. Depends on the scenario. 😛

          Both yes.
And the community online is quite great. Most people try to help you out, though, like everywhere else, there are some big d-bags. Definitely worth it though. I’m in 150 hours now and still have a long way to go. The DLC’s keep it interesting and with the Hotline Miami DLC coming it should be even more fun.

150 hours for a title these days is pretty solid. Thanks for that. I’m really keen on feedback from people here. You are all so much more reliable than Steam. 😛

On a sidenote, I picked up Endless Legend the other day on a friends recommendation and almost cried because it was so awesome. Was about to buy Warlock 2 as well, so it came at a really good time! All hail the Lazygamer community!

I love Warlock 1, haven’t tried 2 yet. Never heard of Endless Legend though, but I see it’s turn-based fantasy strategy….I’m sold.

It is so in depth, that I had to play the tutorial just to learn how to build. The factions are so ridiculously different, that each new faction I have to learn how to play the game from scratch again.

One faction can’t even expand! They get one city. And then just convert people to their weird ass bobble head religion. IT MAKES NO SENSE AND I FRIGGIN LOVE IT.

*Edit: There is even a Zerg like type Scourge faction that aren’t allowed to be at peace (or ally) with other factions. Their backstory demands constant war (as they eat the corpses of their enemies for their population to grow).

            September 26, 2014 at 11:08

            That’s what I missed in Warlock…converting people.
Will definitely have a look. If you’re getting PayDay2 on pc let me know if you’re up for a game.

Yeah I’ll probably pick it up on PC. Will actually pin it to my wishlist now and think about getting it soon. But a ton of good titles coming out very soon as well so may need to just think about how to spend my limited wallet funds.

            September 26, 2014 at 11:19

If you honestly want a complex 4x fantasy strategy game, then you should really check it out. The night I picked it up, I was saying “one more turn” till about 6am the next morning. And then I was still late to work the next day. 😛

If you do pick it up – be aware that you can upgrade districts to level 2 (cities actually need to be structured well or else they suffer morale penalties for you building a city like a douche). I was not aware of this until my third game and it finally dawned on me why I always had unhappy cities (which slows down expansion so much).

*Edit: This is because the tutorial hates you and doesn’t want you to ever win. A con is that the AI is good – but could be better. Play on normal or above. The higher difficulties actually get a lot more tough.

Yeah, I tend to go the goodie-two-shoes route in games first. On the second playthrough, I’ll let my true self show, and kill every living thing within a ten mile radius… Wait, what?! Sorry about that guys – musta passed out for a second. Guess it’s all these late gaming nights catching up with me… 😉
