Up until now, Riot’s League of Legends and Valve’s Dota 2 have been hogging the eSports spotlight with their million dollar prize pools, but Wargaming.net wants a piece of the eSports pie. They’ve announced a 2.5 million dollar prize pool for their eSports season of 2013.
If you don’t know what World of Tanks is, then it should be pretty much self explanatory, a world filled with gamers commanding tanks, blowing stuff up like it’s going out of fashion. What makes this game so much of win is that it’s team based, and free-to-play. The game has servers set in Europe, North America, Korea and SEA, which means that South Africans can, as with most online games, jam on EU servers comfortably.
This league is set to launch in the first quarter of this year, and will consist of regular regional tournaments and playoffs leading up to Grand Finals.
“The scale and popularity of competitive gaming has been skyrocketing over the last couple of years, and we have now reached the point where we can focus significant effort on advancing World of Tanks on to the global eSports scene. Wargaming.net League is a groundbreaking step in our quest to bring the game’s eSports potential into the international spotlight.” says Wargaming’s Global eSports Director, Jonghyuk Baak.
Wargaming doesn’t want to just run some leagues though, they are aiming at throwing loads of cash at gamers in order for them to start careers. Wargaming’s VP of Global Operation Andrei Yrantsau has a clear view of where the company wants to steer its leagues towards.
“Now we have a sustainable tool to broaden our global eSports involvement in an unprecedented way: stimulate the growth of the competitive community, organize bigger and better tournaments with larger prize pools than ever, and provide our best pro gamers with completely viable career opportunities.”
