New teaser trailer for Resident Evil: Retribution – Zombies, cocktail dresses and cheese

I rather enjoyed the first Resident Evil movie. Despite being more action-driven than it’s source material, it was shlocky fun. But since then the films have each got progressively worse, culminating in the last stinker, RE:Afterlife, which placed more emphasis on (admittedly impressive) 3D effects over everything else. Now this new teaser trailer is out and honestly, it looks like once again I’ll be sitting in the cinema, bobbing and weaving in my seat, as I instinctively try to dodge 3D turds flying off the screen.

I’ve always known Paul W.S. Anderson (husband of Milla Jovivich – which explains a lot) to be a pretty uninspired director, and from what I can see in this trailer, he proves his flair for mediocrity once again. I’m seeing nothing but material lifted from other films, with some piss-poor use of slow-motion thrown into the mix.

Also, minus 1 billion points immediately for copying the Tron Legacy soundtrack, possibly the best soundtrack to come out of Hollywood in years.

The official blurb, which strangely enough sounds just like the blurbs of all the previous movies in this franchise:

The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus continues to ravage the Earth, transforming the global population into legions of the flesh eating Undead. The human race’s last and only hope, Alice (Milla Jovovich), awakens in the heart of Umbrella’s most clandestine operations facility and unveils more of her mysterious past as she delves further into the complex. Without a safe haven, Alice continues to hunt those responsible for the outbreak; a chase that takes her from Tokyo to New York, Washington, D.C. and Moscow, culminating in a mind-blowing revelation that will force her to rethink everything that she once thought to be true. Aided by newfound allies and familiar friends, Alice must fight to survive long enough to escape a hostile world on the brink of oblivion. The countdown has begun.

Why does he persist in using that slo-mo, Matrix-y bullet time effect ten years after it got old? Anderson truly has zero imagination and as for the RE series, it got old after the first installment

I’m pretty sure that if all the slow-mo scenes in Afterlife was sped up to normal speed, the film would only have been 40 mins long.

Which implies that there’s about 30 secs of dialogue in the script, with the remaining 39 mins 30 secs taken up with running, shooting, people going “Aaaaargh” and a good 20 minutes devoted to Mia Jovovich’s character frowning

Okay, so I just watched the trailer and against all better judgement, I have to admit, that looks very cool.

That said, it’s a cool looking TRAILER. Who knows what horrible kak the film holds in store
