David Oyelowo starts studying the sweet science, for an upcoming Sugar Ray Robinson biopic

I did’na hear no bell! One more round! Boxing  seems to be in the spotlight once again, as a new Raging Bull is busy filming, while even the original Rocky, Sly Stallone, is preparing to go a couple of rounds with Robert Deniro.

Adding some more training to the punching mitts of that pugilistic practice, is the sweet scientist himself, Sugar Ray Robinson, as a new biopic of the legendary boxer is on the fight cards, with David “The Paperboy” Oyelowo to don the gloves as the great one himself.

Adapted from the autobiographical book about the legend, Sweet Thunder: The Life And Times Of Sugar Ray Robinson, the adaptation from Wil Haygood will focus on the man outside the ring, and how his refusal to give into pressure from the Mob resulted in him being relegated to fighting mid-card matches against lesser boxers, despite the fact that his career saw him emerge victorious over Jake Lamotta six times.

The best in the business would eventually triumph though, as his testimonials would help expose the match-fixing and rigging that had infected boxing, dealing a serious blow to the gangsters that were ruining the sport.

Oyelowo will be taking on that role, and he seems to be a rising star at the moment, as he’s already wrapped up work in two big name films, from Tom Cruises’ upcoming Jack Reacher, through to the ensemble cast of Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln.

Danny Strong is producing the movie, but no director has been found yet for it. Still, this should be an interesting one to watch, and a film which plays around with the underdog boxing formula for a more fascinating tale overall.
