Tom Cruise is Wall-E with a laser gun in this explosive first trailer for OBLIVION

Last week, we had our geekgasms cut short when we were requested by NBC to remove some epic looking concept art for Oblivion, director Joseph “Tron: Legacy” Kosinski’s sci-fi collaboration with Tom Cruise. If you weren’t lucky enough to see them before they got pulled, well then no need to worry because surely if just a picture tells a thousand words, then a 2:47 trailer filled with laser gun battles, spacecraft dogfights and Morgan Freeman doing his best Morpheus impersonation should be writing a grand space opera.

Oblivion is an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes.  On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth.  Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft.  Her arrival triggers a chain of events that  forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Like I mentioned last week, the writing team that produced this screenplay, as well as the acting cast involved had already placed this quite high up on my Most Anticipated list. but after that trailer it’s moved up even higher. The same visual flair that Kosinski brought to Tron: Legacy seems to exist here in spades, and while that film suffered from the fact that while looking cool, it didn’t have much cooking in the script department, this is already looking way stronger.

Here’s hoping they don’t pull a Prometheus though, by marketing the hell out of the movie, because right now the mystery and intrigue of exactly what is going on is certainly a huge draw card. And if somehow, the movie fails to deliver on its potential, well at least it will look really pretty while doing it.

  1. Oh mama! This is looking sweet. About time I had something in the scifi dept to look forward to! Thanks Kervyn, made my Monday! (Is Tom actually just fighting things from his Scientology days here though? Just a thought..)
