In the famous words of the very meta Abed Nadir: “Cool. Cool cool cool.”

Community, Dan Harmon’s cult favourite sitcom, had built up quite the following in its lifetime, despite NBC’s attempts of sabotage by shuffling it around to the graveyard shifts on their schedule, and removing the perfectionist Harmon as showrunner for the admittedly limp fourth season. So of course, when the show eventually got the chop after five season, lots of fans – myself included – were holding out hope that some good samaritan network would swoop in and rescue our crazy friends at Greendale Community Challenge.

With the actors’ contracts with production company Sony about to lapse at midnight tonight, and with other prospective rescuers like Hulu pulling out of proceedings after showing some initial interest, things were looking grim. But at the eleventh hour, the show has found the savior it’s been looking for in Yahoo, as the online network has taken over the reins of the show for an additional sixth season, meaning that we’re now about 83.33333% of the way to completing the show’s oft pronounced goal and mantra of Six Seasons and a Movie!

The show’s sixth season will be streamed online, as part of Yahoo’s new drive to create its own stable of original shows, and you would have to think that the network will be using Community, with its already built-in fanbase, as a lead-in to these other new offerings.

Harmon had this to say about moving online, taking a dig at his former paymasters at the same time for their perceived mistreatment of the show:

“I am very pleased that ‘Community’ will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo. I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, ‘Big Bang Theory.’ Look out, ‘Bang Bus!”

Star Joel McHale, who will be returning along with all the regular cast – Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Ken Jeong and Jim Rash, but minus Donald Glover who left mid-season 5 and relative newcomer Jonathan Banks who has other commitments over on AMC – also had this to add about the return of the show, and how moving to an online platform could lead to some new opportunities:

“The reports of our cancellation have been greatly exaggerated.” —Mark Twain  (The other version of this quote has been wrong for years). # SixSeasonsAndaMovie is real.   Thank you Sony. Thank you Yahoo. Thank you Dan Harmon. And thank you to the greatest   f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race. It’s the internet. We can swear now.”

Community sixth season, comprised of 13 episodes, is expected to debut online in the US Fall season.

And hopefully John Oliver won’t be too busy with Last week tonight (also an amazing show) to reprise his role.
